50] – The Nonhuman Rights Project [info@nonhumanrights.org] is doing a Zoom conversation on Thurs., May 25 at 11 AM ET. Hear from Monica Miller, the Nonhuman Rights Project attorney who argued Happy the elephant’s historic case for liberty before New York’s highest court. The key dates in May that made legal history for animals, including Happy’s landmark hearing, will be outlined.  For hundreds of years, a thick legal wall has separated the human and the nonhuman world, causing unjust suffering to generations of nonhuman beings. The idea is to dismantle this wall, case by case. Register at https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAtdOGorTkpH9bfFGCl6_CWFqqCusdW-ula?emci=6d5058da-44fa-ed11-907c-00224832eb73&emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&ceid=1211801#/registration.

51] – The Mind & Life Institute <info@mindandlife.org> will host a talk How can those with a history of trauma build resilience? On Thurs., May 25 at 2 PM ET, Dominique Malebranche, an assistant professor and licensed psychologist, will do an online talk on "Trauma and Resilience," followed by a Q&A, guided contemplative practice, and interactive breakout groups.  Explore the impact of trauma on individuals and how those with a history of trauma can build resilience. Register at https://www.mindandlife.org/events/mind-and-life-connect/.

52] – On Thurs., May 25 from 4 to 5 PM ET, get with the Public Citizen Democracy Campaign Team virtual Democracy Calls.  These nationwide efforts are aimed at protecting elections and election officials.  Join us on Team Democracy calls to discuss ways we can protect and demand our freedom to vote! Learn ways that we can take action on a state and local level from Shauntay Nelson, Co-Director of States, All Voting is Local Action, Dustin M. Czarny, Onondaga County Elections Commissioner & New York State Election Commissioners Association Democratic Caucus chair, and Denise Lieberman, Director & General Counsel of the Missouri Voter Protection Coalition.  These calls will be on a bi-weekly schedule.  Email democracyaction@citizen.org. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/548559/?followup_modal_context=nonexclusive_newsletter_most_popular_virtual.

53] – Communities United [jessi@marylandcu.org] on May 25 first at 4 PM outside at a press conference and then at 6 PM ET during the City Council Taxpayers' Night inside City Hall, 100 N. Holliday St., on the 2nd floor.  Speak out for a better budget for FY 2024.  Baltimore City continues to generate record-setting revenue from taxes on Baltimore's renters and homeowners while also planning to give away $39 million in tax subsidies to developers of market-rate rental housing in predominantly white neighborhoods.  Meanwhile, rents and evictions continue to skyrocket in Baltimore, particularly in majority-Black neighborhoods, with funds for emergency rental assistance, a critical eviction prevention tool, quickly running out.

Baltimore Renters United urges the Mayor, City Council, and Board of Estimates to make the following modest changes to the budget to promote racial equity and keep people in their homes: $1.6 million for implementation of the City's Right to Counsel in Evictions law, $25 million for emergency rental assistance and additional funds for housing safety inspections and inclusionary housing.  Be there.

Rachel Kutler [info@jufj.org] wants you to know that on Thurs., May 25, members of Jews United for Justice will join Baltimore Renters United (BRU) at City Hall calling for a more just budget, because Baltimore tenants deserve better than skyrocketing rents and destabilizing evictions. RSVP at https://jufj.org/event/baltimore-shavuot/?emci=891c4f77-96f5-ed11-907c-00224832eb73&emdi=1f7be627-c3f5-ed11-907c-00224832eb73&ceid=3403859.

They will talk about the use of migrant prosecutions at the border, Operation Lone Star and other efforts in Texas to criminalize migration, and more.  The workshop will be held on Zoom, and you can register at bit.ly/learndetention2.
