46] – Beyond Extreme Energy [info@beyondextremeenergy.org] needs you on the morning of Thurs., May 18 to Stop Manchin's FERC in Washington, D.C. Get off Fossil Fuels, onto Clean Renewables, Environmental Justice and Democratic Participation Now! Since March of last year, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin has been working with Republicans on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee which he chairs to prevent any substantive change at FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. They must stop their rubber stamping of methane gas pipelines and LNG projects!  Manchin’s agenda is clear. He intends to make another effort after his failures last year to force through Congressional legislation to fast track coal, oil and gas expansion and suppress clean renewables like wind and solar. He wants the Mountain Valley Pipeline to be completed and in operation ASAP. He wants more and more LNG export terminals to be built in the Gulf and elsewhere to ship dirty and dangerous methane gas around the world. He and his Republican allies are an immediate threat to our overheating planet and all of its life forms. Attend and help build a big turnout of people to demonstrate outside the FERC building. Some will engage in nonviolent direct action to demand that FERC stop kowtowing to Manchin and the climate denying/greenwashing fossil fuel agenda.  Register at https://cryptpad.fr/form/#/2/form/view/lI1OFk5DIq+zs5T1L6hR1jH9y8J4CZTlWZgA8tTkCWM/?link_id=0&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-stop-manchins-ferc-may-18th-washington-dc&email_referrer=email_1910895&email_subject=stop-manchins-ferc-may-18th-washington-dc.

48] – On Thurs., May 18 at 11 AM, get with the Nuclear Disarmament of Ukraine with Mariana Budjeryn, hosted by the Nuclear Threat Initiative. Budjeryn, Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center, will be joined by Lynn Rusten, Nuclear Threat Initiative. Budjeryn is author of the new book Inheriting the Bomb: The Collapse of the USSR and the Nuclear Disarmament of Ukraine, which tells the story of how and why Ukraine ultimately abandoned its claim to the nuclear weapons on its territory when the Soviet Union collapsed. Dr. Budjeryn’s book offers a nuanced understanding of Ukraine’s decision-making as a Soviet successor state striving to establish its independence and security in the context of the unprecedented dissolution of a large nuclear-armed state. Her comprehensive account explains how domestic politics, economic needs, diplomatic pressure, and the salience of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty influenced Ukraine’s decision to remain non-nuclear and averted a looming proliferation crisis. The Social Housing Working Group seeks to educate Metro DC DSA chapter members and the general public about social housing and to facilitate collective action in support of the passage and implementation of the Green New Deal for Housing Amendment Act. The legislation proposes to create mixed-income, district-owned housing with market rate units that subsidize a larger number of affordable units. It's a pioneering approach that deepens affordability, invests surplus funds into the creation of more social housing, and locks-in financial sustainability. The bill also includes climate and labor standards and elected tenant boards with oversight over building management. This event is open to both DSA Members and supporters.
