LNG demand in Japan's power sector is expected to rise by more than 10% to about 74 million tons by 2040. Japan is also the largest public and private financier of gas and LNG projects around the world, despite a G7 commitment to phase out financial support for overseas fossil fuel projects. Methane is highly volatile, and this U.S. build-out poses especially dangerous explosion risks and health risks due to the greenhouse gas emissions created by the extraction, transmission, and transportation of LNG. On top of that, we know that LNG is an environmental justice issue, with harms disproportionately placed on Black, Brown, Indigenous, and low-income residents living in impacted communities. For example, in Freeport, Texas air pollution adjacent to the Freeport LNG facility posed some of the highest lifetime air toxics cancer risk and respiratory hazards of any community in the country, according to a report published this May.
