On Wed., July 8 and Thurs., July 9, 9 AM to 1 PM on both days, the Foreign Policy program at Brookings, in cooperation with the European Union Delegation to the United States, will convene leaders, policymakers, and experts in the field of security and defense from the United States and the European Union for a virtual discussion on the pressing security matters facing the trans-Atlantic community. The ninth annual EU Defense Washington Forum will include discussions about the impact of COVID-19 on trans-Atlantic security and a host of other topics such as the technology challenge from China, defense spending and capabilities, EU-U.S.-NATO cooperation, deterrence, non-proliferation, and arms control. See https://www.brookings.edu/events/webinar-eu-defense-washington-forum/.

Folks will gather each Wednesday through Sept. 30. All of the food grown will be donated to various food pantries in our area. Please be in contact if you would like to volunteer. 48] – Keeda Haynes was wrongly incarcerated at age 22. Now, she’s fighting to improve our justice system. To do that, she’s running in the August 6 congressional primary against conservative, Blue Dog Dem Jim Cooper (TN-05). Meet Keeda on Zoom on Wed., July 8 at 6 PM ET. RSVP at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZctdO-gpz0iGtadaNd6Ca1ua5ZTy5mZYi0w. In the last Congress, Jim Cooper voted with Trump almost 40% of the time. He’s taken campaign donations from military contractors that sell military equipment to police, the prison industrial complex, and even the Koch Brothers. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee is hosting this event.

49] – On Wed., July 8 from 6:30 to 8 PM, get with an Emergency Global Day of Action: Junk Anti-Terror Law!  This is hosted by the Malaya Movement DMV/Baltimore at McKeldin Square. Branded by its own proponents as "worse than Martial Law," the Anti-Terror Law, with its vague and overreaching definitions of "acts of terrorism," was signed into law by President Duterte on July 3. The Anti-Terror Law makes it legal for a Duterte-appointed committee to declare ANY organization a "terrorist organization" and detain any "suspected terrorist" for up to 24 days without placing any charges.  The law takes effect and will be imposed on July 18.  Condemn the Anti-Terror Law and build people-to-people solidarity. 50] – On Wed., July 8 at 7 PM, hear about how Women got the Vote, hosted by Hadassah Greater Baltimore, 3723 Old Court Road, Suite 205, Pikesville 21208. Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment granting women the right to vote, and hear award winning journalist and writer, Elaine Weiss, author of “The Woman’s Hour.”  Ms. Weiss will highlight the inspirational story of the hard-earned victory of the Nineteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Ms. Weiss spins her story against the backdrop of the drama that unfolded in Tennessee – the 36th and final state to ratify the amendment, allowing the amendment to become law. Ms. Weiss, who hails from Baltimore, weaves a story of heroines and villains …that is both riveting and timeless given today’s challenges. Please pre-register at https://www.facebook.com/events/327939061539863/.

51] – Nursing homes are a perfect storm for COVID-19: close conditions, vulnerable residents, staff without sufficient PPE and for-profit companies putting profits over the lives of our loved ones. Register now for a conversation with special guest Rep. Jan Schakowsky broadcast by Act.tv! A shocking 43% of deaths from COVID-19 are linked to nursing homes.  More than 54,000 nursing home residents and workers have died. The coronavirus has preyed on a weak system plagued by companies skimping on patient care to maximize profits, lax protections, and terrible working conditions. Our elders and our loved ones deserve better. On Wed., July 8 at 7 PM ET, learn more about the crisis in nursing homes, and what we can do about it at the next Dispatch from the Frontlines. RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/forms/webinar-signup-dispatch-from-the-frontlines-covid-19-and-the-nursing-homes-crisis?source=cpcc_email&link_id=3&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&email_referrer=email_854100&email_subject=tomorrow-covid-19-crisis-in-nursing-homes.

53] – On Wed., July 8 from 7 to 9 PM, discussion/debate between Prince George’s County Council members Tom Dernoga and Dannielle Glaros on CB-48 -- a pending measure that would increase the county’s taxing powers -- with co-moderators Suchitra Balachandran and Stuart Adams, presidents respectively of the West College Park and Calvert Hills Civic Associations.   The event is being convened by four College Park City Council members.  Dernoga’s and Glaros’s districts jointly cover College Park and they have taken opposing positions on this bill.  Access link is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82697946073?pwd=QnlDNjgwSnpWNVRQMm5jSWlqeG9nZz09#success.
