57] – On Thurs., July 16 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, Tell FERC No More Tolling! This is organized by Beyond Extreme Energy. Join the Online Event at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kduiqpj0qGN1Cnt3rk4Q6P_lsO3sP1aN6. For the first time in decades, the FERC commissioners will be holding their monthly meeting without the legal use of "tolling." The US Court of Appeals in DC ruled that this “Kafkaeqsue” tool of injustice (their word), was illegal and must be ended by a 10-1 vote.  “Tolling” stops us from going to court after FERC rubber-stamps pipeline permits. In some cases pipeline fighters have had to wait 15 months, before FERC rejects their administrative appeal. During that time pipeline companies are allowed to seize land by eminent domain and engage in construction. FERC has “tolled” every case for the last 12 years when groups have filed administrative appeals. And in every case they have eventually denied the appeal!

Hear from Donna Chavis, one of the leaders of the successful effort to defeat the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, and Francis Eatherington, an Oregon landowner who has been fighting since 2005 to stop a proposed pipeline that would connect to a Jordan Cove LNG export terminal. Go to https://www.facebook.com/events/1183054832072110/.

58] – On Thurs., July 16 from 11 AM to noon, catch a discussion about European Security and Strategic Autonomy [Online].  To attend the Zoom Webinar, register at https://www.mei.edu/events/european-security-and-strategic-autonomy.  Email events@mei.edu or call 202-785-1141 ext. 202.  This event is hosted by the Middle East Institute.

59] – Trump’s Covid Calculus is happening on Thurs., July 16 at 11 AM ET.  The resurgence of Covid-19 infections has stalled hopes for an economic rebound, leaving millions of workers unemployed. Policy makers are reconsidering their next steps — from additional stimulus and stricter public health measures to altering school re-openings. How is the White House handling Covid-19 policy amid continuing economic concerns? White House correspondent Maggie Haberman joins the DealBook team for a behind-the-scenes look at what to expect in the months ahead. RSVP at https://timesevents.nytimes.com/dealbookdebrief0716/dnl?utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=dealbook&utm_content=dealbookdebrief0716.

60] – Tune into the Institute for Policy Studies Webinar Borders in Moments of Crisis on Thurs., July 16 from 11:30 AM to 1 PM.  The COVID-19 pandemic is devastating people around the world, and rather than take steps to provide for public health, governments are using the crisis to justify xenophobic, anti-immigrant policies aimed at restricting our collective freedom to move, live and thrive. The United States and Israel in particular–along with their allies–are militarizing borders and further colonizing land in the process–impacting Palestinians and other Indigenous peoples, refugees, undocumented people, and other migrants. Join a conversation on how the US and Israel are using COVID-19 as a pretext to militarize borders, and restrict the wellbeing of Indigenous and undocumented people. RSVP at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_5MbQxtshQWmjdbr6qSPe2w.

61] -- On Thurs., July 16 from noon to 1 PM, catch Live from Syria and get an update on Open Hospitals project, hosted by AVSI-USA. Learn more about Operation Open Hospitals in Syria. Live from one of the hospitals supported by the project in Damascus, Flavia Chevallard, AVSI Project Coordinator, and Dima Allaham, the project Social Worker, will give an update, share testimonials and answer questions.

Since 2016, the project provides medical care free of charge for those living in poverty and supports the activities of three non-profit hospitals in Syria - the Italian Hospital and the French Hospital in Damascus and St. Louis Hospital in Aleppo. Open Hospitals is implemented by AVSI with the support of individual donors, various institutions and private foundations, including the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Catholic Health Association. So far, more than 35,000 people have been treated in the three hospitals and the goal is to reach 50,000 by the end of the project. Check out https://www.facebook.com/events/699568397286585/.

62] – On Thurs., July 16 at noon EDT, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) will host a discussion on the ravaged health care systems and the collaboration needed to develop solutions to improve health care. The conversation will cover the importance of approaching solutions through an intersectional analysis of COVID-19’s impact. Tune in at https://phr.org/issues/covid-19-pandemic/events-and-webinars/.  You are encouraged you to submit questions for consideration at webinar@phr.org. Panelists will answer selected questions during the question and answer portion of the webinar.

63] – Check out a webinar on Thurs., July 16 at noon ET to provide a real time update from Mexican labor activists facing escalating threats as corporate bosses battle to smash the new NAFTA’s promised labor rights improvements.  This webinar will feature Susana Prieto Terrazas, a leading labor lawyer for border maquila workers just released after imprisonment on trumped-up charges and currently under threat of re-arrest, and Oscar Alzaga, legal advisor to a rare independent Mexican union - Los Mineros - which has long been subject to brutal repression. 66] – Progressive Maryland is continuing the momentum in the fight against policing and structural racism in Maryland. As part of its demands for statewide racial justice, there is a Task Force Meeting on Thurs., July 16 from 5:30 to 7 PM to call for an end to the criminalization and mass incarceration of Black people that comes as a result of targeted, violent police tactics. Call for the creation of municipal programs to dispatch trained professionals like social workers, drug counselors and mental health practitioners on 911 calls that involve certain emergencies. Leaders across the state are advocating for their county executives to defund their local police force and instead invest that money into these community-led public safety systems as well as directly into Black communities.
