45] – Flood Capitol Hill with Justice on Mon., Apr. 16 at noon in Upper Senate Park, New Jersey Ave. and Constitution Ave. NW, WDC. There will be a short rally with speakers and music, followed by a march on Capitol Hill and nonviolent direct action.

Join SOA Watch to continue to push forward the demands for the closing of the School of the Americas (SOA/ renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, WHINSEC) and an end to U.S. militarization in the Americas. U.S. Militarization in the Americas has increased during the Obama administration, as evidenced by the military coup and the ongoing violence in Honduras, the ever-expanding "War on Drugs," the continuing murders of unionists in Colombia and the construction of new U.S. military bases throughout the hemisphere. It's time to step it up, to get anti-militarization on the national agenda in 2012, and to create alliances to stop "teaching democracy" through the barrel of a gun!

Congress continues to fund the training of repressive Latin American military forces at the School of the Americas and relies on "military solutions" for social problems. The decisions made by Members of Congress and their aides are costing lives, and are contributing to more suffering every day. There will be a die-in in front of Congressional offices which will re-enact the scene of a massacre to symbolize and commemorate the thousands who have been killed at the hands of U.S.-trained graduates of the SOA/ WHINSEC. Mr. Moran calls for the U.S. to: invest in high-end, knowledge-based commerce to stay competitive against China; establish a way to deal with future Middle East conflicts that have resulted in America's diminished influence in the region; scale back its commitments at home and abroad while enacting a transparent tax system; encourage American households to make forward-thinking decisions regarding their finances, education, and job skills; and, revamp international relations and security by technologically engaging a wider range of overseas contacts and updating America's own global information strategies. The cost is $10 for non-members; it is free for members, students and Teachers.  A reception will follow. Visit www.worldaffairsdc.org or call 202-293-1051.

Riker, director, Beyond the Classroom Living & Learning Program, University of Maryland. The panel will focus on the largest environmental protests in the United States in the 21st century that led to the arrest of over 1,200 citizens who were protesting the proposed Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline Project that would ship carbon-intensive oil from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. On January 19, 2012, President Obama rejected the permit for this 1,700 mile pipeline. What strategies led to this successful effort to stop this project? What are the lessons for the environmental movement in future campaigns to prevent global climate change?  Go to WWW.BeyondTheClassroom.umd.edu or email jriker@umd.edu.

53] – Fund Our Communities, Bring the War Dollars Home has been asking people, especially Takoma Park residents, to come to the Takoma Park City Council meetings on Mon., Apr. 16 to support a resolution urging Congress to reorder federal budget priorities by cutting the military budget and using the money to fund human needs at home. This resolution is similar to the resolution that was to have been voted on by the Montgomery County Council last fall but was squelched by Lockheed Martin. Each Council session begins at 7:30 PM with a public comment period, and Takoma Park residents may also say a few words (under 3 minutes) in support of the resolution. Hold a small sign that says Bring the War Dollars Home. Call 240-463-5995.

54] –  Support NDAA resolutions in Montgomery County by joining the Montgomery County Civil Rights Coalition 7:30 PM on Mon., Apr. 16 in the Takoma Park City Council room, 7500 Maple Ave. and hold up a small "SAVE DUE PROCESS" sign. You can show support at the meeting by holding up this flyer: http://tinyurl.com/ndaa-tpcouncil-flyer. If you prepare a statement, please consider sharing it with us at mococivilrights@gmail.com, for publication in the blog.
