31] – CCAN [info@chesapeakeclimate.org] on Tues.  April 7 from 6 to 8 PM is celebrating Earth Month in Maryland by engaging in a virtual phone bank huddle These are challenging times for climate progress. Just last month, the Maryland Supreme Court ruled to block climate lawsuits against Big Oil, the Southwest experienced a once-in-a-4,433 year heatwave, and the Trump administration paid an energy company $1 billion to stop their offshore wind projects and invest in LNG instead. And yet, the climate movement is resilient. Here is some good climate news: Solar power is growing faster than any power source in history, closely followed by wind, and just last month the U.S. District Court of Maryland upheld Montgomery County’s all-electric building code.  Make an impact by making phone calls with CCAN Action Fund to help advance climate progress in Maryland. 32] – The Ellsberg Initiative for Peace and Democracy [ellsberginitiative@eipad.org] on Tues., April 7 at 7 PM is warning about Targeting the University: Censorship, Political Power, and the Fight for Academic Freedom.  ͏Universities are now on the front lines of America’s democratic crisis. What can look like isolated controversies — curriculum bans, DEI restrictions, funding threats — are increasingly operating as parts of a coordinated political strategy to reshape higher education nationwide. Why has higher education become such a powerful political target? What forms of coordinated, cross-campus defense are proving most effective? This timely panel will highlight individual and collective steps to protect the university as a public good that advances democratic citizenship. RSVP at https://www.eipad.org/

33] –The next meeting of the Northern Virginia Medicare for All Working Group will happen virtually on Tues., April 7 at 7 PM.  The Zoom link will be sent to you before the meeting.  Discuss Medicare for All campaigns in northern Virginia and plan other actions to ensure healthcare as a human right. The group meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month. The meetings are open to the public, and the group welcomes all who support healthcare as a human right.
