58] – It’s time to bury the Monroe Doctrine and foster positive relationships across Latin America and the Caribbean. CISPES will participate in the Congressional Advocacy Day on Fri., April 28 from 10 AM to 4 PM to demand Congress end U.S. military and economic intervention in Central America. Then come to American University on Sat., April 29 from 10 AM to 5:30 PM for the Forum: "In Search of a New U.S. Policy for a New Latin America: Burying 200 Years of the Monroe Doctrine," followed by an arts and culture event that night.  You can also participate online!

This year marks the bicentennial of the Latin American and Caribbean struggles against the U.S. Monroe Doctrine. This oppressive policy has been the root cause of countless horrors that people in Latin America and the Caribbean have faced over the years, including military invasions, the establishment of military dictatorships, human rights violations, economic blackmail and coups against democratic governments - forcing many to flee north in pursuit of safety and opportunity.  The forum will provide a platform to examine the present political situation in the region and to formulate, alongside dozens of grassroots organizations, a more equitable U.S. policy for the 21st century. Keynote speaker, Juan González, investigative journalist and co-host of Democracy Now!, will be joined by grassroots organizers, economists, scholars, filmmakers and other leaders from across the U.S. and Latin America for an exciting day of panels.
