33] – Pax Christi USA <jcoode@paxchristiusa.org> wants you to know about the Ecumenical Advocacy Days 2023: Swords into plowshares from Tues., April 25 at 8 AM ET through Thurs., April 27.  The theme is Achieving enough for all and pursuing peace. Pax Christi USA is honored to join many other faith-based advocacy groups to co-sponsor this year’s Ecumenical Advocacy Days (EAD), an online three-day event organized by the ecumenical Christian community and its partners and allies.  EAD is a conference that provides education and advocacy tools on a variety of issues of social justice. Themes over the years have included migration, immigration and refugees; hunger and food justice; racism, class and power; mass incarceration; development and gender; and #goodtrouble.

In the book of Micah (4:3-4) we read: “They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid.” The theme could not be more timely -- wars in Ukraine, Yemen, Sudan, and too many other locations are decimating the populations, inflicting tremendous pain and suffering, forcing people to become refugees, to say nothing of the wasted resources and the ecological destruction. Ongoing state-sanctioned threats in Palestine, Nicaragua, the Philippines, and so many other locations, lead to unjust incarcerations, disappearances, extrajudicial murders, and create poverty, trauma, and deep anxiety. Here in the United States, a grossly distorted military budget robs millions of citizens of the support they need for housing, food, health care, and education, which are the things that truly build peace.

Marie Dennis, Pax Christi USA’s 2022 Teacher of Peace and senior director of Pax Christi International’s Catholic Nonviolence Initiative, will be one of the speakers at the opening plenary on April 25 at 2 PM ET.  Earlier that day, April 25, at 11:30 AM ET, Pax Christi USA’s National Field Organizer Lauren Bailey and Ambassador of Peace Tom Cordaro will offer an skills-building workshop centered on our Bread Not Stones campaign, and on Wed. April 26, Michelle Sherman, Program Director for nonviolence and campus outreach, will be a panelist for a workshop on U.S. militarism in the Philippines.  Archbishop John Wester (Santa Fe, New Mexico) will be a featured speaker during the plenary on militarism and peacemaking on Wed., April 26 at 10 AM ET.  Register at https://www.accelevents.com/e/u/checkout/ecumenical-advocacy-days-2023/tickets/order.

34] – The Union of Concerned Scientists [action@ucsusa.org] is inviting you to an event on Tues., April 25 at noon ET -- Ending sole authority to launch a nuclear strike. Register at https://secure.ucsusa.org/a/2023-4-25-sole-authority-webinar?contactdata=jY2B4nx%2bv0T6OIIUttK8S4W%2fd7Y2FkiItayUBziXLh4hBn5mcLLhmU4vMCYEcpOB337LtgLYN214hwmJgMLANwo%2fhNw47bkk4nfz7D%2byp4KRVnEhROJuE9ks0deAymCPl7m4C7LUbizlEdd7NjXz%2fMs6Etq4ZX8Ep%2bMk24P5Eqq63WBfvlH1EHeYWOzcN%2fukHLCe4s%2fYOF%2fFeJUvjGcvU%2fg%2b7wwhcRF4qHAWEomk2mVxptNDEbYBCURuTGySnJfLvbYxIKlam6yALopz8bncug%3d%3d&utm_medium=email&utm_source=email&utm_campaign=email&emci=3153086a-08d7-ed11-8e8b-00224832eb73&emdi=b651e1a9-bed7-ed11-8e8b-00224832eb73&ceid=1507036.

The Ukraine war and President Putin's ongoing references to Russia's nuclear weapons have reignited awareness of the role that nuclear weapons play in international security policy. What is less well-known is that in the United States, the president—and the president alone—has the authority to issue an order to use nuclear weapons, perhaps starting a nuclear war. What can we do to change that reality?  Lisbeth Gronlund, PhD: Research Affiliate, Laboratory for Nuclear Security and Policy, Department of Nuclear Science, MIT, will discuss the risks inherent in the current policy and how to modify it to include more people in any decision to use nuclear weapons.  Stephen Young, Senior Washington Representative, Global Security Program, UCS—will talk about why pushing for changes to current policy make sense now and how you can help.

35] -- The Time to Care Coalition [info@timetocare.net] is meeting on Wed., April 19 from 4 to 5 PM ET. Celebrate the passage of SB828/HB988, discuss what this means for paid leave in Maryland, and brainstorm next steps for the coalition. Register at timetocare.net. After registering, you will get a confirmation email that includes the Zoom details for the event.  Visit https://actionnetwork.org/events/time-to-care-coalition-meeting-april-25th/?source=direct_link&link_id=1&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&email_referrer=email_1883929&email_subject=next-tuesday-coalition-meeting-and-debrief.

36] – Join the Baltimore Nonviolence Center on Tues., April 25 from 4:30 to 5 PM ET at 33rd and N. Charles Sts. The invasion of Ukraine has the potential to become a war extending throughout Europe.  Putin has destroyed Aleppo and Grozny and has threatened the use of nuclear weapons.  Russian soldiers were sent into the area around the contaminated and still radioactive Chernobyl nuclear plant. Now they are stationed in the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe.   People who believe in peace and justice should come forward and take the risks of peace. The burial sites continue to expose ruthless war crimes by the invaders, Contact Max at mobuszewski2001 at Comcast dot net or 410-323-1607.

38] – Metro DC DSA [info@mdcdsa.org] is calling for folks to testify to end police stops for minor traffic violations in Montgomery County at a hearing on the STEP Act at 7 PM on Tues., April 25. The Silver Spring Justice Coalition (SSJC), which Montgomery County DSA participates in, is supporting the STEP Act, a bill that would prohibit Montgomery County police from stopping people for minor traffic violations and limit their ability to prolong stops by pressuring drivers to consent to searches of their cars. This bill is an important step towards reducing extreme race-based disparities in traffic enforcement in Montgomery County. A public hearing on the bill will be held at 7pm on April 25, 2023.

The SSJC is also encouraging supporters to attend the County Council hearing. 39] – Danaka, CODEPINK [info@codepink.org] wants you to know that Daniel Ellsberg faced up to 115 years in prison for telling the truth.  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌Join a special webinar to honor Dan Ellsberg & other whistleblowers on Tues., April 25 at 7PM ET! RSVP at https://www.codepink.org/danielellsbergweek?utm_campaign=daniel_ellsberg_week&utm_medium=email&utm_source=codepink.

In 1969, Daniel Ellsberg copied and leaked the Pentagon Papers which told the people of the United States that they were being lied to about what was happening in Vietnam. A few months ago he found out he was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer. CODEPINK is joining its partners in declaring it Daniel Ellsberg week. Here from Julian Assange's brother, Gabriel Shipton, CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou, and Jesslyn Raddack, attorney and member of Daniel Hale's support team.
