43] – On Wed., Oct. 27 at 9 AM ET, check out Nuclear-Conventional Entanglement and the Advent of Hypersonic Weapons. The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) cordially invites you to attend this webinar. The webinar will also be livestreamed to YouTube. Deterrence theorists and practitioners have struggled with the relationship between nuclear and conventional weapons since the beginning of the nuclear era. The emergence and rapid proliferation of high-precision long-range conventional missiles has generated new challenges to deterrence, as well as reshaped old ones, raising a number of questions. Can conventional weapons replace nuclear weapons as the primary deterrence tool? How does dual capability of many of these weapons affect the stability of strategic relationships? Will the introduction of hypersonic weapons change the security environment? Dmitry Stefanovich, Institute of World Economy and International Relations, will address these and other questions, outlining possible paths toward mitigating the challenges introduced by these weapons. In the waning months of the Trump administration, Milley contacted his counterpart in China and reassured the Chinese government that the US would maintain strategic stability, particularly regarding US nuclear weapons. Republicans have soundly criticized General Milley for his actions. However, in a Wall Street Journal editorial on October 4, William Perry, former Secretary of Defense [sic], stated: “The problem is not that General Milley deviated from policy; The problem is the policy.”

Join a this virtual conversation examining the dangerous situation in which the sitting president of the US can launch a nuclear attack without any consultation with the Congress, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Cabinet, and the American people. Explore options to rectify this urgent situation with leading scientists and scholars:  Professor Robert Redwine, MIT Physics, Professor Elaine Scarry, The Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, Harvard University and moderator, Professor Emeritus Jonathan King, MIT Biology.  Register at https://mit.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_SKnnwyKkQ8OD9025o4aAsA.  Email info@masspeaceaction.org.

If the Senate does not overcome the filibuster and pass this legislation, states may not have enough time to implement the legislation’s regulations before the 2022 midterm elections! Join activists around the country at a Common Cause virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support the vote! RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/commoncause/event/376178/ to call on Wed., Oct. 27 from 4 to 6 PM ET and 6 to 8 PM ET, Thurs., Oct. 28 from 6 to 8 PMET, Fri., Oct. 29 from 4 to 6 PM and Sat., Oct. 30 from noon to 2 PM ET, 1 to 3 PM ET, and 6 to 8 PM ET.

They might have the money, but we have a movement.  We need to pass a climate and jobs bill that meets the scale of the climate crisis, creates millions of good, union jobs, and directs money to communities most impacted by the climate and economic crises.  Phonebank on Wed., Oct. 27 from 5:30 to 7 PM EDT and Fri., Oct. 29 from 5:30 to 7 PM EDT.  Sign up at https://www.mobilize.us/sunrisemovement/event/403248/?utm_source=phonebank.
