] – On Wed., Oct. 20 at 7:30 PM ET, join a conversation with Todd Miller, author of several books including: “Build Bridges, Not Walls” and “Empire of Borders.” See https://citylights.com/open-media-series/build-bridges-not-walls/.  Register at https://www.codepink.org/wtf_empire_borders. The United States is outsourcing its border patrol abroad—and essentially expanding its borders in the process. The twenty-first century has witnessed the rapid hardening of international borders. Security, surveillance, and militarization are widening the chasm between those who travel where they please and those whose movements are restricted. But that is only part of the story. As journalist Todd Miller reveals in Empire of Borders, the nature of US borders has changed. These boundaries have effectively expanded thousands of miles outside of US territory to encircle not simply American land but Washington’s interests. Resources, training, and agents from the United States infiltrate the Caribbean and Central America; they reach across the Canadian border; and they go even farther afield, enforcing the division between Global South and North.

] – Nancy Merritt, Peace Alliance/[info@peacealliance.org] wants you to participate on Wed., Oct. 20 at 8 PM ET with Congressperson Jim McGovern.  Get on the call for A Department of Peacebuilding, Human Rights & Civic Activism.  To join the Zoom call, click here https://us02web.zoom.us/j/464735321#success or call-in at 1-929-436-2866 with a meeting ID 464 735 321.  McGovern (MA-2) has cosponsored Department of Peacebuilding (DoP/ HR 1111) legislation in every Congress since inception of that bill 2001.  He is a human rights activist.  He has worked to end world hunger and to restore the balance of power between the President and Congress.  He has worked tirelessly on behalf of the Tibetan community.

] – Free Speech for People [contact@freespeechforpeople.org] welcomes you to an event on Wed., Oct. 20 at 8:30 PM ET. How Do We Save Our Democracy? Join a strategy session with US Reps. Barbara Lee and Jamie Raskin to discuss what each of us can do to preserve our democracy. ‌ State legislators across the country, allied with the former president, are introducing and passing a myriad of voter suppression laws designed to prevent people, especially people of color, from exercising their fundamental right to vote. Join a strategy session with US Representatives Barbara Lee and Jamie Raskin to discuss the constitutional crisis we face and what each of us can do to preserve our democracy. RSVP at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_17jqHuyuR0SKOl4kIP_blg?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=b3d5d265-16b7-431d-ba5a-eaeabc71c0b8.

These policies are job enabling and job creating. They boost our economy and our families, and we need them now!! Come to Union Square on the west side of the Capitol lawn off 3rd Street SW, between Constitution Ave. NW and Independence Ave. SW; and near the Capitol Reflecting Pool. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/momsrising/event/423136/.

] – Mike Tidwell, CCAN Action Fund [info@ccanactionfund.org] wants you to phone bank on Thurs., Oct. 21 from 6 to 8 PM ET.  Help break the deadlock in Congress on climate change. Global climate leaders will meet in Scotland in 26 days for a last-chance effort to cut greenhouse gases worldwide. But the US Congress will make progress impossible without first passing major domestic climate legislation this month.  In other words, it's crunch time. And we need your help. So CCAN Action Fund has set up a user-friendly phone bank for every Tuesday and Thursday night in October. Connect with voters in West Virginia with their key swing-vote Senator, Joe Manchin. Register at https://www.mobilize.us/ccanactionfund/event/416726/.

] –Join Progressive Maryland on Throw down Thursdays. Phonebank and text bank with the team every Thursday from 6 to 7:30 PM ET.   Every week call or text voters across the state for a number of important issues. This Thursday, Oct. 21, we’re texting Marylanders about the great benefits in the federal Build Back Better Act. We’ll be giving them a link to contact their Member of Congress to urge them to support all of the BBB agenda especially when it comes to Medicare expansion and lowering prescription drug prices. You can help us win this campaign!  We can’t let the lobbying of Big PhRMA and giant corporations drown out the voices of people.

] –Join activists around the country at a virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support of the Freedom to Vote Act! Our democracy is in crisis: with redistricting around the corner and hundreds of voter suppression laws being introduced in states across the country, we do not have time to wait. Every day we’re getting closer to a very real deadline to take action. If the Senate does not overcome the filibuster and pass this legislation, states may not have enough time to implement the legislation’s regulations before the 2022 midterm elections! Join activists around the country at a Common Cause virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support the vote! RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/pfaw/event/376178/?utm_source=PFAW to call on Thurs., Oct. 21 from 6 to 8 PM ET, Fri., Oct. 22 from 4 to 6 PM ET, and Sat., Oct. 23 from noon to 2 PM ET, 1 to 3 PM ET and 6 to 8 PM ET.

] – Revisit the clash of ideas between Henry George and Karl Marx and their followers. This four-session lectures series presents the story of how George’s emergence as a populist voice for systemic reform in the 19th century coincided with the equal populist socialist movement attached to Marx. Both of these innovative thinkers attracted many thoughtful (and controversial) supporters to their cause, and these supporters frequently debated one another, worked in collaboration or competed for influence and public support. These lectures tell the story by instructor, Edward J. Dodson on Thursday – 10/21, 10/28, and 11/4 from 6:30 to 8 PM EDT.  Sign up at https://www.hgsss.org/henry-george-karl-marx-and-their-followers-a-century-of-intense-rivalry/.
