31] –On Wed., May 26 at 10 AM ET, get with a No First Use Global Campaign and Strategy Meeting.  This online gathering will continue on Thurs., May 27 from 8 to 9:30 AM ET. This is a civil society meeting to build cooperation and campaign actions for no-first-use policies, organized by the Abolition 2000 working group on nuclear risk reduction (UK/International), Basel Peace Office (Switzerland/International), Beyond the Bomb (USA), Peace Depot (Japan), People for Nuclear Disarmament (Australia), Prague Vision Institute for Sustainable Security (Czech Republic), World Future Council (Germany/International) and Zona Libre (Mexico).  ‘No-first-use’ (NFU) is a policy that can be adopted by a nuclear armed (or allied) state to never initiate a nuclear exchange by being the first to use nuclear weapons. China and India have declared such policies. The Soviet Union/Russia had such a policy from 1982 to 1993. There are political developments promoting the adoption of no-first-use policies by others – particularly the United States and its allies under extended nuclear deterrence, i.e. NATO/Japan/South Korea and Australia. Join at https://www.abolition2000.org/event/no-first-use-global-campaign-and-strategy-meeting/.

32] –On Wed., May 26 at 10 AM ET, tune into Deal or No Deal: US-Iran Talks and Implications for the Middle East.  Most signs at the moment suggest that US-Iran nuclear negotiations are making incremental progress. There might be a deal, which would have to include the US lifting some of the sanctions on the country, while the government of President Hassan Rouhani is still in place. Alternatively, the talks can drag on for months more to come. What is undeniable is that the prospects of a revived nuclear agreement to be sustainable is best served by broadening the US-Iranian dialogue as quickly as possible. A number of issues will continue to pit American and Iranian interests against each other. On this list of disagreements, US-Iran competition in Iraq is among the most contentious.  The discussion is sponsored by the Middle East Institute.  Sign up at http://www.mei.edu/events/deal-or-no-deal-us-iran-talks-and-implications-middle-east.

33] – Get with Maryland Solar 101: hosted by Frederick County and the City of Frederick on Wed., May 26 at noon ET.  Learn about solar energy and its benefits for your home, or small business. You will be taken through the technology, economics, financing, and more.  You'll also learn about the solar co-op which is free to join and members are *not* obligated to buy solar panels. Sign up at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_r8w3iUN1RvKC0bKDDSNvVw.

34] – On Wed., May 26 at 2 PM ET, check out a discussion Are "Advanced" Nuclear Reactors Actually Better? This is a Critical Examination of the Safety, Security, and Environmental Risks of Non-Light-Water Technologies. A recent study by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) finds the answer is “no” for most designs in terms of safety and security, sustainability, and the risks of nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism. The report recommends that policymakers and private investors fully vet the risks and benefits of these technologies before committing the vast resources needed to safely commercialize them. Edwin Lyman is the director of Nuclear Power Safety at the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington, DC. He earned a doctorate in physics from Cornell University in 1992.  The sponsor of the event is Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
