23] – On Mon., May 11 from 7 to 8:30 PM, Profs & Pints Online will present Coronavirus and Climate Change. Go to www.crowdcast.io.  Hear from Olufemi Taiwo, assistant professor of philosophy at Georgetown University and scholar of post-colonialism and issues related to environmental justice.  New York University climate economist Gernot Wagner called the covid-19 pandemic “climate change on warp speed:” a mega-crisis scientists warned us about but that policymakers ignored until it was too late. He is right, and both the global response to coronavirus and the world’s responses to climate change paint a bleak picture of our world’s future if we stay on the same path.

Drawing on his research, Professor Taiwo will propose a path forward that will promote justice and save lives. Among the policy ideas he’ll discuss, he’ll focus heavily on the Green Stimulus proposal, which calls for massive investment in green "shovel ready" projects. Such an approach could build the institutions and infrastructure needed for a decarbonized economy, helping to remedy the climate crisis, while providing jobs that will help remedy the poverty that leaves people more vulnerable to ailments. Moreover, it could build the capacity of people - both in and out of the United States – to meet their needs and choose their own destinies. (Tickets are $12. A recorded version of this talk will remain available online. Look at https://www.facebook.com/events/707193410029224/.

25] - On Tues., May 12 from 10:45 to 11:45 AM, join Identifying and Countering Disinformation Online, hosted by the Woman's National Democratic Club. Visit events.r20.constantcontact.com. As online disinformation tactics get more and more sophisticated, it’s getting harder and harder for all of us to know what’s accurate and what’s not. Equipping ourselves to tackle this is even more urgent in this critical election year. Tim Durigan, DNC Data Security Analyst, will talk through the common online tactics being used against voters, as well as best practices for addressing them.  For everyone’s security, instructions on joining will be shared after you have registered.
