by Decriminalize Nature DC. Take part in a solo celebration of
Bicycle Day! While we would have preferred to be able to gather together for a
ride, getting out on our own and remotely sharing our experiences with one
another is the next best thing! Hop on your bike, take some selfies, and
tag Decriminalize Nature DC! (Twitter: @DecrimNatureDC; Instagram:
@decrimnaturedc).
What
is Bicycle Day? It is a celebration of the fateful day of April 19th, 1943,
when Albert Hoffman took the modern Western world’s first psychedelic trip.
Five years after first synthesizing LSD, which was derived from a rye fungus
called ergot, Albert Hoffman tested the properties of the compound by taking
what he expected to be a very mild dose – .25 grams (250 micrograms). He then
asked his assistant to accompany him home and he rode his bike while tripping
through the streets of Basel, Switzerland. He was quoted in his book LSD: My
Problem Child as saying: “Everything in my field of vision wavered and was
distorted as if seen in a curved mirror. I also had the sensation of being
unable to move from the spot. Nevertheless, my assistant later told me that we
had traveled very rapidly.” Tune in to https://www.facebook.com/events/1393507514167038/.

9] – Syria Today: Facing Coronavirus in the Midst of War and Sanctions
is hosted by Massachusetts Peace Action on Sun., April 19 from noon to 1 PM.
Syria, like many other countries, is facing a potential crisis from the
coronavirus pandemic, but under circumstances which could make an outbreak much
more devastating. Syria once had one of the most effective healthcare and
pharmaceutical industries in the Middle East. Now, debilitated from 9 years of
war and foreign intervention, with a medical infrastructure devastated by the
conflict and crushing international sanctions, Syria’s ability to respond
effectively to a threatening coronavirus emergency has been severely weakened.
To participate, go to https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_R89nhQeWSFC_u8krKxprvw.
10] – On Sun., April 19 from 2 to 3 PM, join a Virtual
Workshop: Unpacking the 2015 Baltimore Uprising, hosted by Brittany T.
Oliver - Advocate, Speaker, and Strategist at the Enoch Pratt Free
Library, 400 Cathedral St., Baltimore 21201. The response in Baltimore to the
death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray left a tremendous impact on the city and
across the country, the frustration about police brutality toward African
Americans remains. Are we moving in the right direction? What does it mean to
say Black Lives Matter? Let’s share lessons we learned from the uprising.
