35] – Amazon Watch [news@amazonwatch.org] on Wed., June 12 at 11:45 AM is organizing a rally at the White House to call on Biden to pardon Steven Donziger. More than 50 other organizations are demanding that President Biden pardon human rights lawyer Steven Donziger after Chevron targeted him with the nation’s first private corporate prosecution. Chevron orchestrated this legal attack as retaliation for Donziger’s role in achieving a $9.5 billion judgment against Chevron for the deliberate dumping of billions of gallons of cancer-causing oil waste in the Ecuadorian Amazon. It is also meant to scare other would-be environmental and human rights lawyers from taking on the fossil fuel industry.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention condemned Donziger’s prosecution and found that his detention was illegal under international law. The body instructed the Biden administration to make reparations, but it has yet to respond.  RSVP at https://www.freedonziger.com/event-details-registration/climate-defenders-rally?utm_source=Amazon+Watch+Newsletter+and+Updates&utm_campaign=c500a13fa1-2019-04-25-blk%2B_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e6f929728b-c500a13fa1-343455685&mc_cid=c500a13fa1&mc_eid=44c0c5618d
