4] – Barry Lee Burnside, a gaggle of great writers and copy editors are making available “A Bag of Snakes: Selected Writings on Prisons and the Death Penalty by Murphy Davis and Eduard Loring. Edited by Barry Lee Burnside.” Ed indicates the book will be available for sale on April 13, and is asking you to pre-order your copy. Your donation will provide a needed financial boost for the printing costs. The suggested donation is $20 for one copy; and $30 for your copy and an additional copy for a prisoner or someone in need. Any donation is appreciated. More or less you will receive the book.  Barry and the team have spent over two years putting this book together. It begins with outlines and notes found in the boxes of materials Murphy left when she ascended. The work is a work of love, and all involved are proud of the fruit borne by seeds nourished in good soil.

To order by postal mail, make your check to Open Door Community.  Send it to Open Door Community, PO Box 10980, Baltimore 21234.  For any questions, contact David Payne at 404-290-2047 or davidpayne@opendoorcommunity.org.

5] – Another book to consider purchasing is Male Supremacy in the Catholic Church: An Insider’s View by Roy Bourgeois. His new book is both memoir and position-paper, and it makes the case that the Roman Catholic Church is a corrupt system that spits out truth-tellers. The crime he was excommunicated for was attending the ordination ceremony of Janice Sevre-Duszynska in Lexington, Kentucky, in August 2008. The ordination was under the auspices of the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests.  The Vatican’s response has been to excommunicate any woman who has the audacity to see herself as a priest equal to a male priest. You can purchase a copy from Amazon or by Kindle.

Here are two quotes to contemplate: “I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men. She is to keep silent.” – Timothy 1, 2:12-13.  “If the patriarchy that dominates the church is not dismantled and women are not treated as equals, the church will continue to diminish and, eventually, die.” – Roy Bourgeois.

6] – The Interfaith Coalition for Black Lives [interfaithcoalition4blacklives@gmail.com] is collecting school supplies for two Baltimore City Youth Centers and a School!  Donate new school supplies for the Kirk P. Gaddy Youth and Community Center, Inc., on the east side, Unified Efforts, Inc., a free summer and afterschool program on the west side, and Federal Hill Preparatory School, a Title I public school in south Baltimore.  Through August 29, you can drop off donations at Stony Run Friends Meeting, 5116 N. Charles St., Baltimore 21210.  The Meetinghouse is just south of Northern Parkway on the grounds of Friends School.  The Meetinghouse has a long porch in the front (with a horseshoe shaped driveway in front).  There is a large plastic, marked box next to the door where you can donate your new supplies.  If you have a check or cash, ring the doorbell during business hours Monday through Friday. On Friday until 3 PM.  Needed items are three-ring binders, backpacks, boxes of tissues and disinfectant wipes, white board markers, filler paper for binders, folders (especially plastic), pencil boxes, stickies, in addition to the "usual" items such as pencils, pens, crayons, markers, colored pencils, spiral and marble bound notebooks.

The first is finding new homes for her houseplants and the second is rehoming her cat. If anyone knows of someone looking for a very cute male cat who loves to eat and look out windows but does not seem overly fond of people except as food providers, let us know.  This information is from Dick Worsham & Debbie Geisenkotter, 2012 Westchester Ave., Baltimore 21228. 14] –Migrant Accompaniment Training, hosted by the DMV Accompaniment Network (DAN) will occur on Sun., Aug. 24 from 3 to 5 PM ET. For migrants arrested by ICE, stress and anxiety are intense. People with escorts are less likely to be detained, and if they are detained there is someone to maintain contact with family and legal representation. Speaking a non-English language (especially Spanish), and having access to a car, are a huge plus. Email calldanprotonmail.com.

Learn how to provide both practical and emotional support during ICE/ISAP check-ins and court hearings. This is a training to participate in the DMV Accompaniment Network (DAN). It will be 2 hours long with one break. The style is mostly presentation, with opportunities to ask questions throughout. DAN connects volunteers and other allies with members of our communities who have to report to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), check in at Intensive Surveillance Appearance Program (ISAP), appear in immigration court, or who request accompaniment for other immigration related appointments. See accompaniment as a political response to the violence inflicted on immigrant and refugee communities by decades of oppressive policies. This training is sponsored by Breath of God Church. She will share about the situation on the ground in the West Bank, resistance through traditional Palestinian embroidery, and engage in conversation with attendees.  Beautiful examples of tatreez embroidery will be available for sale. Masks are encouraged, and will be provided.

16] – Alan Minsky for Progressive Democrats of America [info@pdamerica.org] hopes you will attend on Sun., August 24 at 4 PM ET the weekly Town Hall.  This is a three-part Town Hall with one unifying message:  Labor against Trump, Progressives for Change at the DNC, plus an Update from Hartzell Gray.  In this time of crisis, we must think strategically, organize accordingly, and take action. Discuss why solidarity with organized labor, participation in mass demonstrations, reforming the Democratic Party, and supporting dynamic progressive candidates are all essential to defeating fascism and building a society where humanity can flourish in harmony with the earth.

The speakers are Jackson Potter, Vice President of the Chicago Teachers Union, Selina Vickers, DNC Member from West Virginia; and Hartzell Gray, Congressional Candidate from Metro Kansas City, MO. Potter will talk about the next big national mobilization against the Trump administration from the coalition that brought millions of Americans into the streets during the No Kings and Hands Off demonstrations. Only this time, labor unions are taking the lead in the Workers over Billionaires demonstrations taking place across the country on Labor Day, September 1st. Vickers will speak about  the numerous progressive resolutions and rule changes that will be voted on at the annual DNC meeting in Minneapolis next week. These reforms include resolutions calling for the end of U.S. military sales to Israel, and the end of big money dominating Democratic Party primaries - as well as significant bylaws and rule changes that PDA has long supported, and that will help democratize the Party. Gray will report on Republican efforts to gerrymander his district (and American democracy) out of existence. This campaign is more than just about Frankie as a representative -- it's about fighting for real political change and representation for residents of Greenbelt on their city council. Come by Frankie's house in Greenbelt to celebrate their run and get ready to get them into office. An organizer in Maryland for over 8 years, Frankie was drawn to Greenbelt by its rich history and culture of cooperation and is a proud member of Greenbelt Homes Incorporated ("GHI), the Coop Supermarket and Pharmacy, and the Greenbelt Cinema. 18] – The Baltimore Rapid Response Network (BRRN) [info@baltimorerapidresponsenetwork.org] wants you to be there on Mon., Aug. 25 at 6:30 AM. Do not let them send Kilmar to Uganda. Rally and Vigil at his ICE check-in at the George H. Fallon Federal Building, 31 Hopkins Plaza, Baltimore. Kilmar was released from a Tennessee jail and reunited with his family yesterday, after incredible support from CASA, his family, our community, and each of you.  But now, Trump's immigration officials say they intend to deport him to Uganda in 72 hours -- another vindictive move. It's likely they intend to take him into custody there. The easiest parking is Downunder iParkit, located under the building. RSVP at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSedxVNs0ZZy3aelaifmVNOavuAioPB2TeSTMfT-eizNVSP-YQ/viewform?emci=1b5796a0-5a80-f011-b484-6045bdeb7413&emdi=1f446d5b-6180-f011-b484-6045bdeb7413&ceid=4262660

19] – There is a weekly Pentagon Peace Vigil from 7 to 8 AM on Mondays, since 1987, outside the Pentagon Metro stop.  The next vigil is Aug. 25, and it is sponsored by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker.  Email artlaffin@hotmail.com or call 202-882-9649.  The vigil will be outside the Pentagon's south Metro entrance and in the designated "protest zone" behind bicycle fences across from the entrance to the Metro.

By Metro, take Yellow Line and get out at the "Pentagon" stop. Do not go to the Pentagon City stop! Go up south escalators and turn left and walk across to protest area. By car from D.C. area, take 395 South and get off at Exit 8A-Pentagon South Parking. Take slight right onto S. Rotary Rd. at end of ramp and right on S. Fern St. Then take left onto Army Navy Dr. You can "pay to park" on Army Navy Dr.,  and there is meter parking one block on right on Eads St. Payment for both of these spots begins at 8 AM.  No cameras are allowed on Pentagon grounds. The restrooms are located inside Marriot Providence Inn on corner of S. Fern and Army Navy Dr.

20] Jewish Voice for Peace is doing a Power Half-Hour for Gaza: Channel grief & outrage into action to stop a genocide.  A year into the genocide in Gaza, we are overwhelmed with sorrow and rage. There are no words to describe the devastating pain of the past year in which the Israeli military has killed over 44,000 Palestinians in Gaza, including more than 17,000 children. The International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court have both declared that Israel must stop the genocidal acts being committed on the Palestinian people. And the U.S. government is actively supporting the Israeli military as it wreaks devastation on the over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza. JVP continues to come together as a political community in its daily half-hour to take action. Join in and take collective action to demand an arms embargo to Israel, immediate end to the genocide, a lasting ceasefire and an end to Israeli siege, apartheid, occupation, and oppression of Palestinians and Lebanon. All are welcome. All are needed. Get involved at 3 PM ET on Mon., Aug. 25, Tues., Aug. 26, Wed., Aug. 27 & Thurs., Aug. 28.
