Patterson Park, Baltimore 21224. Meet on the southernmost end of the Boat Lake
in Patterson Park, closest intersection is Eastern Avenue and South Rose
Street. From there, walk directly north into the park via the cobblestone path,
approximately 100 yards. Over 200 bird species have visited Patterson Park, an
important migratory stopover in Baltimore City! Audubon and Baltimore Bird Club
experts will lead in search of avian friends! No experience necessary. Email baltimore@audubon.org. RSVP at https://md.audubon.org/events/birdwatching-tour-patterson-park-baltimore
51] –Metro DC DSA [info@mdcdsa.org] endorsed Shayla Adams-Stafford, and socialists are organizing to elect a people’s champion to the Prince George’s County Council District 5 seat. Comrades will be canvassing for Shayla on Sat., Jan. 25 from 11 AM to 2 PM ET, starting from the Downtown Largo Metro Station Park and Ride, 9000 Lottsford Road, Largo 20774. Knock on doors until about 2 PM and meet up afterward to debrief. Chapter members and allies are invited to participate: hand warmers will be provided, and warm dress is strongly encouraged. RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/1-25-canvass-for-shayla-adams-stafford?link_id=47&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-metro-dc-dsa-weekly-newsletter-for-january-3-2025-2&email_referrer=email_2593574&email_subject=metro-dc-dsa-weekly-newsletter-for-january-24-2025
Shayla is a former Teachers Union shop steward, has led the fight on the school board for care not policing in our schools, and fought back against developers to get strong project labor agreements on public school projects. This race will decide the balance of power on a County Council split 5 – 5 between corporate developer interests and progressives. Establishment Democrats are opposing Shayla with everything they have.
52] – RootsAction Team [info@rootsaction.org] on Sat., Jan. 25 at 1 PM ET is hosting the Taxpayers against Genocide webinar. Taxpayers against Genocide (TAG) has energized activists nationwide with its lawsuit against members of Congress who’ve voted for billions of dollars’ worth of weapons to Israel while the mass murder in Gaza continues. RootsAction is pleased to be hosting the Taxpayers against Genocide webinar. 53] – On Sat., Jan. 25 at 1 PM ET, join the Sunrise Movement. Right now thousands of acres are burning in one of America’s largest cities. 30,000 people have evacuated their homes. Meanwhile, oil CEOs and their politicians celebrate their ever increasing wealth. This cycle must stop. Our generation must force a new path forward. Join this call to find your place in the fight alongside us. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/354486/?followup_modal_context=nonexclusive_newsletter_most_popular_virtual

54] – DSA's Stomp out Slumlords group is holding an anti-eviction canvass at 1:30 PM ET on Sat., Jan. 25 at the L’Enfant Plaza Metro, 650 D St. SW, WDC 20024. SOS will be canvassing to inform tenants facing eviction of their rights in court, how to acquire a lawyer, and how to build a tenant association. As Trump’s corporate suitors pursue weakened tenant laws and sadistic roundups of immigrants, the need for organized tenant power is more urgent than ever. RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/sos-anti-eviction-canvas-january-2024/?link_id=5&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-metro-dc-dsa-weekly-newsletter-for-january-3-2025-2&email_referrer=email_2593574&email_subject=metro-dc-dsa-weekly-newsletter-for-january-24-2025

56] – Susan Kerin [susank@capconcorp.com] indicated that on Sat., Jan. 25 from 3 to 5 PM there will be a Teach-in on the Maryland Israel Development Center at 2640 St. Paul St., Baltimore 21218. 57] – DSA’s public power campaign kicks off the new year with We Power DC 101 meeting on Sat., Jan. 25 at 3 PM at Sudhouse, 1340 U St. NW, WDC 20009. Attendees will learn about DC’s path to a public power alternative: an electric grid owned fully by our local government. Organizers envision a future with lower rates, community control, greener energy, and no shareholder influence. Plenty of big cities already operate under this model, like Austin, Seattle, and the entire state of Nebraska.
We Power organizers will provide a brief presentation on the current state of energy distribution in DC, the grave ills that Pepco and the investor-owned utility model have wrought on working-class people, and We Power DC’s campaign for municipalization. Following the presentation, organizers will be hanging out for drinks and a chat. 59] – Hideaki Ito [silentfalloutproject.org@gmail.com] wants to give you an update about the Silent Fallout Project. It has been more than five months since Silent Fallout was screened in Baltimore. He wants to express his sincere gratitude to all who supported the project during its US tour and hosted screenings. The film was shown in 20 locations over 43 days to over 600 people. The film aims to raise awareness about the reality of radiation contamination across the American continent and how many Americans are unknowingly exposed. It helps people understand that they are impacted by this issue and then use the US as a starting point to spark a global conversation about radiation.
Currently, the project is facing a deficit of $100K, and its future is uncertain. However, Ito is determined to raise funds and continue its activities. In 2025, which marks the 80th year since the birth of the atomic bomb, there is a plan to embark on a European screening tour, produce a new film, conduct a second US tour, and host a large-scale event on August 6th. “One is called to live nonviolently, even if the change one works for seems impossible. It may or may not be possible to turn the US around through nonviolent revolution. But one thing favors such an attempt: the total inability of violence to change anything for the better" - Daniel Berrigan
