54] – On Thurs., Oct. 3 from 6 to 8 PM ET, there is a hybrid Socialist Night School -- What is Public Safety?  It will take place online or at the MLK Memorial Library, room 401-D, 901 G St. NW, WDC 20001. Email Info: politicaleducation@mdcdsa.org

What keeps us safe? What is public safety, what are the conditions that produce safety and how can we, both collectively and individually, intervene to address harm? Many people who believe police and prisons are essential also believe that non-carceral solutions are essential too—but may not know what those look like. For those who are new to abolition, it is easier to answer what doesn’t work than what does. Discuss the drivers of interpersonal harm, what the research shows about policy responses to reduce and redress that harm, and what we can do about these ourselves. RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/what-is-public-safety-socialist-night-school?clear_id=true&link_id=27&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-nova-branch-dsa-upcoming-actions-and-events-176&email_referrer=email_2448973&email_subject=nova-branch-dsa-upcoming-actions-and-events

55]On Thurs., Oct. 3 from 6 to 7:30 PM ET, check out a Million Muslim Votes: A Way Forward, a critical event as we approach the most contentious presidential elections of our lives. With over 2 million Muslim voters set to turn out in 2024, we face unprecedented challenges. Both presidential candidates have disappointed our community—one threatening democracy itself, the other enabling the ongoing atrocities in Gaza. The stakes are higher than ever, with thousands of Palestinian lives lost in Gaza and no clear candidate aligned with our values—domestically and abroad.

Join this pivotal discussion, as we host members of Congress from across the nation to address the concerns of the Muslim American community and explore possible paths forward in this difficult political moment, including Rep. Ro Khanna, Attorney General Keith Ellison, Andy Levin, and others, who will discuss the critical issues that matter most to our community—both at home and abroad.   Join the Social Housing Working Group for its biweekly organizing meeting. Learn about its latest activities, what is the plan for the future, and how to get involved. There is proposed legislation to create mixed-income, district-owned housing with market rate units that subsidize a larger number of affordable units. It's a pioneering approach that deepens affordability, invests surplus funds into the creation of more social housing, and locks-in financial sustainability. The bill also includes climate and labor standards and elected tenant boards with oversight over building management. This event is open to both DSA Members and supporters.
