The film and discussion, facilitated by filmmaker Gabe London, will be streamed on Zoom. Register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUrcumsqjsiGdYHFU3OKsj_Bw0FRaNhHVtV.

Produced in the immediate aftermath of the Bravo-Charlie hydrogen bomb detonation, the film references Hiroshima and Nagasaki, nuclear radiation dangers, the Fifth Lucky Dragon incident and the nuclear arms race. Over 20 minutes of film related to nuclear weapons were cut from the Godzilla version released in the US in 1956.  The film, directed by legendary film maker Ishiro Honda, was runner-up to the SEVEN SAMURAI for best Japanese movie of 1954.

25] –On Mon., Oct. 19 at 7 PM, join the Maryland Poor Peoples Campaign Monthly Monday Meeting (3rd Monday).  Join this nonviolent civil disobedience training session.  With the kind of nationalist dog-whistling, attempts to throw the outcome of the election into question and the continual voter suppression efforts, there is a lot of concern about what will happen on election day, as well as afterwards. With that in mind, it is urgent to make sure we are prepared should we need to turn out for peaceful protest.  There are many roles people will be able to play: not only those who will be prepared to be arrested if necessary, but also support roles, such as legal observers, drivers, and others.  In preparation for this training, please read the Fundamental Principles at https://www.poorpeoplescampaign.org/about/our-principles/?link_id=12&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-maryland-poor-peoples-campaign-weekly-update-16&email_referrer=email_950843&email_subject=maryland-poor-peoples-campaign-weekly-update.  Join the Zoom meeting at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMkd-uvqDIjGN0mtRQMmdzgNZ3ilpTtQvA9?link_id=14&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-maryland-poor-peoples-campaign-weekly-update-16&email_referrer=email_950843&email_subject=maryland-poor-peoples-campaign-weekly-update.

26] – Catch Populism and Anti-Populism with Thomas Frank on Mon., Oct. 19 from 7 to 8:30 PM.  To join this Online Event, go to http://masspeaceaction.org/event/populism-and-anti-populism-thomas-frank/?emci=bfb935f7-a80c-eb11-96f5-00155d03affc&emdi=7e7b3dfd-a90c-eb11-96f5-00155d03affc&ceid=269591.  Denunciations of populism had been commonplace for years but flowered into a full-blown panic in 2016, when commentators identified it as the force behind the unlikely presidential bid of celebrity billionaire Donald Trump. Then came Brexit. Populists were charged with misleading people about globalization, with disparaging elites, and with subverting traditional institutions of government. Frank writes in his new book, “The People, NO: A Brief History of Anti-Populism,” that this is all a mistake.  The author and political commentator argues that the real story of populism is one of enlightenment and liberation. It’s an account of American democracy itself, of its promise of a decent life for all. From the tumultuous 1890s, when the radical left-wing Populist Party fought Gilded Age plutocrats, to the reformist triumphs under Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, Frank points out how much is owed to the populist ethos.  Our current president? Not a populist at all, Frank maintains, but a candidate who made promises of “populist-style reform, none of them sincere,” that sounded good enough to enough voters to secure his election by one of the least populist of institutions, the Electoral College.

27] – Join the Get Money Out of Maryland Teleconference on Mon., Oct. 19 from 8:30 to 9:30 PM.  There are two ways to join the conference: Dial 1 929 205 6099, and then use meeting ID: 512 862 260. 30] – The deadline is 2030. If we want even a chance of avoiding catastrophic runaway climate chaos, then that is the year by which we need to cut global emissions by half. Four more years of Trump will mean we have next to no chance of meeting that deadline, at which point the future of organized human society would be in severe peril. The #VoteTrumpOut campaign is contacting thousands of swing voters on Facebook every day, and your help is needed.  Volunteer Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with the Digital Canvass team, and help flip a crucial swing state! Everyone who can should be giving time to help save our planet from this aspiring tyrant. Sign up here to get started: https://www.mobilize.us/unitedagainsttrump/event/329042/.  Take a slot on Tues., Oct. 20 from 4 to 5 PM ET or 8:30 to 9:30 PM ET.

Charles St., Baltimore, Maryland 21218.  You can also reach his office by Phone: (410) 516-8068, Fax: (410) 516-6097 or email: president@jhu.edu.

33] – On Tues., Oct. 20 at 7 PM, Jews United for Justice is urging you to attend a Montgomery County Racial Equity & Policing Call.  See https://jufj.org/event/mc-policing-mtng-oct-2020/?emci=d512f178-26f9-ea11-99c3-00155d039e74&emdi=eb0bf9d4-acf9-ea11-99c3-00155d039e74&ceid=3403859.To achieve peace, prosperity, and progress, we must find a way to cope with a changing China instead of escalating the situation. This administration's current approach of "decoupling" the US economy from a country with 1.4 billion people and wasting hundreds of billions of dollars on a new arms race are not effective solutions. There are dangers inherent when nuclear-armed nations are not getting along.
