Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, presents a lecture on his work on Mar. 7 at 4 PM in the Albin O Kuhn Library Gallery of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Dr. Marc's work documents his visits to Underground Railroad sites, from which he creates photo-montages combining both historic and new imagery dealing with the African-American experience in American society through the centuries.  Call 410-455-3827 or go to http://aok.lib.umbc.edu/gallery.

8] –  The TRAVELING EXHIBIT Windows and Mirrors: Reflections on the War in Afghanistan, is now opening on Thurs., Mar. 1 with a reception at 7 PM at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 945 G St. NW, WDC.  The American Friends Service Committee invites you to see the traveling art exhibit.  The mural panels created by international artists and US students help us imagine the experience of Afghan civilians - from death and destruction to hopes for peace. Drawings by Afghan students in Kabul – collected in June 2010 – provide an up close look at life in a war zone. The exhibit is not a single image, but a tapestry, a statement on the human cost of war. The "windows" they have created help us feel the impact of war on the Afghan people, become "mirrors" reflecting our own identity as citizens of a nation at war — and call us to act.  It is open to the public on Thursdays, Mar. 1, 8, 15 & 22, from 5 to 8 PM and on Sun., Mar. 4 from 3 to 7 PM. Visit http://windowsandmirrors.org/.

The exhibit features a collection of 4' x 6' murals created by U.S. and international artists to memorialize the civilian casualties in Afghanistan, as well as artwork by Afghan schoolchildren about living with war. See it at the Methodist Building, 100 Maryland Ave. NE, WDC from Thurs., Mar. 1 through Thurs., Mar. 22 from 9 AM to 5 PM.   Go to http://www.afsc.org/.

Living under the brutal occupation of the Roman Empire, Jesus declared: "The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel." (Mk.1:15) Living in the U.S. Empire, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. described it as "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world." Haiti's vivid history and tumultuous past, a melodic soundtrack by Wyclef Jean and interviews with Dominique and with his heroic wife shot before Dominique's assassination on April 3, 2000 are featured in this fascinating film directed by Jonathan Demme. The movie is an eerie reminder of Haiti's longtime troubled past in light of the recent earthquake, as well as an inspiration for a brighter future.

17] – On Fri., Mar. 2 at 5 PM, as part of Occupy AIPAC, see the clips from a preview screening of "Hip Hop is Bigger than Occupation" at Busboys & Poets on 5th and K Sts. NW, WDC. Visit www.occupyaipac.org.

18] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., Mar. 2 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings. Since it is First Friday, there will be a potluck dinner after the vigil, followed by a film.

19] – The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration Committee, Chesapeake Physicians for Social Responsibility and Baltimore Quaker Peace and Justice Committee of Homewood and Stony Run Meetings are hosting the FILM & SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS DVD SERIES.  The third film in the series AND JUSTICE FOR ALL [USA, 1979] will be shown on Fri., Mar. 2 at Homewood Friends Meetinghouse, 3107 N. Charles St., Baltimore 21218.  The Meeting hosts a potluck dinner from 6 to 7 PM on First Fridays after the vigil.  At 7 PM, the DVD will be shown with a discussion to follow.  There is no charge, and refreshments will be available.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

The film is directed by Norman Jewison from an Oscar-nominated script by Valerie Curtin and Barry Levinson.  It stars Al Pacino, John Forsythe, Christine Lahti, Jack Warden and Lee Strasberg. When a judge is charged with rape, Arthur Kirkland [Pacino] is forced to defend him. An idealistic defense attorney in Baltimore, he has a moral and legal dilemma to defend this martinet, who is probably guilty.  He would rather be exposing corruption and seeking "justice for all," the last four words in the Pledge of Allegiance.  The film shows many scenes of downtown Baltimore, including the courthouse area, a scene running around the Washington Monument/Mount Vernon Place, and Fort McHenry. Pacino received an Academy Award nomination.  Bill Hughes, videographer extraordinaire and a member of the bar, will lead the discussion.

20] – On Fri., Mar. 2 at 7 PM, see the film THE WAY [U.S.,  2011] as part of the Peace Center of Delaware County First-Friday Large Screen Free Film Series, 1001 Old Sproul Road, Springfield, PA.  Starring Martin Sheen, the film was written and directed by Emilio Estevez. For centuries, pilgrims have walked the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James, seeking peace and direction in their lives. Legend holds that the remains of Jesus' apostle, James, were carried by boat from Jerusalem to northern Spain where he was buried on the site of what is now the city of Santiago de Compostela.

In this emotionally affecting and at times humorous film, shot along the actual Camino de Santiago, Sheen plays Tom, a sixty-something American doctor, who travels to France to collect the remains of his adult son. The son, Dan (portrayed by the film's director and Sheen's real-life son, Emilio Estevez, in flashback scenes) has died in an accident after just beginning his planned walk on the Camino de Santiago. Tom decides to cremate the remains and carry the ashes as he fulfills his son's planned walk.  The doors open at 6:30 PM for light refreshments. Call 610-544-1818 or go to www.delcopeacecenter.org

21] –  On Fri., Mar. 2 at 7:30 PM, John Judge will look at No Child Left Alone: Countering Militarization of DC Schools at Dorothy Day Catholic Worker, 503 Rock Creek Church Rd. NW, WDC, 20010.   Judge, a founding member of the National Network Opposed to Militarization of Youth and a board member of the National Coalition to Protect Student Privacy, has been taking combat veterans into high schools since the late '60s. Since 1985 he has organized a presence in DC public and charter schools to counter military recruitment, present a realistic view of military life and combat, and address the special problems veterans, women and people of color face when they join today's military. He has also worked to change school policies relating to recruiter access, student privacy and other tools like JROTC and ASVAB testing, with some success. Call 202-882-9649.

22] – On Fri., Mar. 2 from 7:30 to 9 PM, Pax Christi Metro DC-Baltimore is holding a social gathering at the Center of Concern, 1725 Otis St., NE, WDC.

23] – Music Director Marin Alsop leads in this multimedia production, bringing live soloists, chorus and orchestra to silent film. The performance commemorates the 600th anniversary of the birth of Joan of Arc, featuring Carl Dreyer's 1928 silent film "The Passion of Joan of Arc."  on Fri., Mar. 2 and Sat., Mar. 3 at 8 PM and Sun., Mar. 4 at 3 PM at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St. The price range goes from $28 to $88. Call 410-783-8000 or go to http://bsomusic.org.

In many ways, movies are still catching up to Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 silent classic The Passion of Joan of Arc. The story of the teenage martyr's ecclesiastical trial and her own spiritual struggle is told largely in close-ups of the astonishingly expressive star Maria Falconetti, a tactic that's still uncanny and effective more than eight decades later. Tonight, Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra compound the power of Dreyer's masterwork by accompanying it with a live performance of Richard Einhorn's composition Voices of Light, which scores the film for orchestra, vocal soloists, and chorus (in this case, the Baltimore Choral Arts Society.)

24] –

Come out for the BSO's Women of the World Festival on Fri., Mar. 2 through Sun., Mar. 4 at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St.  The festival features a number of keynote lectures, interactive workshops and more, all culminating in a concert event on Saturday, March 3 featuring Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rain Pryor, Maria Broom and a number of other local acts. Call 410-783-8000 or go to http://wowbaltimore.org.  The first-ever Women of the World-Baltimore Festival boldly steps up to celebrate the accomplishments and influences of women of all ages and walks of life.

25] – There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. Parkway and 39th St.  Drive on campus by taking the third left turn. The next dance will be Mar. 2.  Call Dave Greene at 410-599-3725.

26] – Go to the West Baltimore Farmer's Market for fresh fruits, vegetables, breads and other treats every Saturday from 8 to noon.  CPHA has worked with the West Baltimore Marc TOD and Transit Inc. (WBMTTI) to establish a Farmer's Market at the West Baltimore Marc Train stop at Smallwood Road at Franklin and Mulberry Sts.  Since opening in June, over 300 people buy fresh groceries there every Saturday morning. WBMTTI will continue to include the community in the transit-oriented developments on the west side and continue to improve the area around "the highway to nowhere" until it becomes the highway to somewhere. Go to www.cphabaltimore.org.

27] – On Sat., Mar, 3, Pax Christi Metro DC-Baltimore will be holding a one-day retreat with Bishop Tom Gumbleton at St. Aloysius Church, WDC.  To reserve a space, contact Luann Mostello - lmostell@cnmc.org – ASAP.  The suggested offering is $25, but no one will be turned away due to monetary considerations.

28] – On Sat., Mar. 3 from 8 AM to 3:30 PM, be at the 33rd Annual Archdiocesan Social Ministry Convocation at Seton Keough High School -  READING the SIGNS of the TIMES: Catholic Social Teaching in Action Today.  This year's Convocation promises to be a dynamic program filled with workshops on thought-provoking topics and workshop leaders who have a lot of knowledge and life experience in their topic areas. Click the link below to view the schedule of the day, workshop descriptions and speakers, as well as the registration form to fill out and send back to make sure you reserve your place today: http://www.catholiccharities-md.org/advocacy/parish-social-ministry/pdfs/smc-registration-2012.pdf.

29] – In the past two weeks, hundreds of supporters have contacted their lawmakers urging support for tax fairness legislation. Marylanders are fed up with the fact that millionaires pay a lower percentage of their income in state taxes than the rest of us do. It is not right that big corporations like Pepco and Verizon do not pay any state income tax at all.

Join Progressive Maryland on Sat., Mar. 3 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM in dropping information about the tax fairness campaign at the doors of voters in the districts of particular legislators. Email Kate at kate@progressivemaryland.org  for details.

30] – Occupy AIPAC takes place from Sat., Mar. 3 through Tues., Mar. 6.  Go to www.occupyaipac.org.  No War on Iran! End the Israeli occupation. Join the protest to learn why the dangerous AIPAC agenda threatens all of us.

An Occupy AIPAC Summit takes place on Sat., Mar. 3 from 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM at the Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church, 900 Massachusetts Ave. NW, WDC,  near the Mt. Vernon Square Metro. On Sun., Mar. 4 from 7 AM to 4 PM, join the No War on Iran - All-Day Protest.  There is a rally at 11 AM, and a creative visual action at 12:30 PM. Greet Obama's Motorcade between 7-9 AM, and see DC hip hop artist Head Rock perform at 3:30 PM.  These gatherings take place outside the AIPAC Conference, corner of Massachusetts Ave. and 9th ST. Demand "Diplomacy, Not War."

On Mon., Mar. 5 and Tues., Mar. 6, protest at the White House when Netanyahu meets with Obama, and then greet Congresspeople arriving at the AIPAC gala on Monday night. AIPAC boasts that 1/2 of Congress will be there. Protest outside when GOP candidates Gingrich, Romney and Santorum address AIPAC.  On Tuesday, there will be lobbying on the hill.  Email Alli at alli@codepink.org.

To be continued.
