30] – In Remembrance of Anthony Shadid will be presented by Busboys and Poets and feature Ralph Nader on Sat., Mar. 17 at 8 PM at 5th & K Sts., NW, WDC.

 

31] – From Sun., Mar. 18 through Wed., Mar. 18, attend the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability, DC Days. Come to D.C. for four days of advocacy and training about nuclear issues! ANA's comprehensive training will build your comfort level about the issues and the team approach ensures that everyone can play a meaningful role in Congressional meetings. 32] – On Sun., Mar. 18, 2012 from 9 to 11 AM, get over to the PEACE CAFÉ, Busboys and Poets, 14th and V Sts. NW, WDC 20009.  Join in to learn about a unique community of coexistence growing in the capital of Israel's Negev (southern desert). Lauren Joseph, Hagar's Director of Development and Public Relations, will speak about how the Arab and Jewish communities of Beer Sheva are overcoming conflict to create a more peaceful society.  

 

33] – Usually, the Baltimore Ethical Society, 306 W. Franklin St., Suite 102, Baltimore, MD 21201-4661, meets on Sundays, and generally there is a speaker and discussion from 10:30 to 11:30 AM.  On Sun., Mar. 18, the topic is "Educational Accountability Systems: Ethical and Political Issues." It was be addressed by Gail Sunderman, PhD, senior research associate, The George Washington University Center for Equity and Excellence in Education. Use of educational accountability systems driven by measurable goals, incentives, performance monitoring and assessment, and consequences for low performance has been on the rise since the 1990s. Gail Sunderman will provide an overview of how these systems—based on new public management theories or a "business" approach—have come to dominate education policy over the past 20 years. In tracing their evolution, she will address what about them has stayed the same, what has been abandoned, and what new components have been added. Her talk is intended to engender a discussion regarding the ethical and political questions raised by this increased educational standardization. 36] – The Hiroshima Nagasaki Peace Committee of the National Capital Area will have its initial planning meeting on Sun., Mar. 18 at 6 PM at 1213 Girard St. NW, WDC 20009. 38] – "Precious Knowledge" is the March Focus-In! Film.  It will be shown on Sun., Mar. 18 from 7 to 9 PM at Busboys and Poets - Shirlington (VA), 4251 S Campbell Ave., Arlington VA 22206.  "Precious Knowledge" is timely as the nation turns its focus toward a wave of anti-immigration legislation. Along with their harsh anti-immigrant stance, Arizona lawmakers abolished Ethnic Studies classes. 40] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland's Super Max Prison, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  Maryland's death row was moved out of Baltimore, but it was decided to continue the vigil. The next one is scheduled for Mon., Mar. 19. Call 410-366-1637.

 

41] – Iraq: 9 Years of War and Activism. Is It Over? On Mon., Mar. 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Busboys & Poets, 14th and V Sts. NW, WDC.  On the 9th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq, be at an evening of reflection and looking forward.  Hear stories from big and small actors in the anti-Iraq occupation movement about how the past nine years impacted them and their lives, and the lasting lessons for us as a movement. See photos and videos from Feb 15, 2003, the largest mobilization that the world had ever seen, and other historic protests against the continued occupation. Phyllis Bennis of Institute for Policy Studies and Vasudha Desikan of Left Turn are the featured speakers in this event sponsored by: Washington Peace Center, Military Families Speak Out, United for Peace and Justice et al. 42] – Students & Community Activists should know that there are classes & a Study Group on Cuba & the Case of the Cuban 5.  This will take place on Mondays in from 7 to 8:30 PM at the Solidarity Center, 2011 N. Charles St., Baltimore 21218, sponsored by Workers World Party and the Solidarity Center.  On Mar. 19, study the history of the Cuban revolution Part 2.  Registration is encouraged. (No one turned away for lack of funds.)  These classes are being conducted to coincide with the Washington D.C. "Obama Give Me Five!"
