] – Making History – the J Street 2012 Conference & Gala Dinner takes place starting Sat., Mar. 24 through Tues., Mar. 27 in Washington, D.C. Go to http://jstreet.org/makinghistory/.

] – Obama's Presidency and its Impact on Africa and the Global African Diaspora is a topic of discussion on Sat., Mar. 24 at 3:45 PM at the Hilton Hotel, 1750 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD, across from the Twinbrook Metro Station on the Red Line.  Revival of Pan-Africanism Forum presents the guest speaker Dr. Molefi Asante.  Call 202-725-0094 or email PanAfrica.now@gmail.com.

] – A screening of Countdown to Zero can be seen on Sat., Mar. 24 from 5:30 PM at AFI Silver Theatre, 8633 Colesville Rd., Silver Spring, MD.  A fascinating and frightening exploration of the dangers of nuclear weapons, this film is a wake-up call about the urgency of the nuclear threat. It exposes a variety of present-day threats and features insights from a host of international experts and world leaders who advocate the total elimination of nuclear weapons. Countdown to Zero tells a story of uncertainty, exposing the real possibility of nuclear disaster and revealing the truth behind an issue on which human survival itself depends. It was directed by Lucy Walker, and produced by Lawrence Bender. Go to http://www.dcenvironmentalfilmfest.org/films/show/879.

] – The Maryknoll Lay Missioners Benefit Show is on for Sat., Mar. 24 from 7 to 9 PM at  St. Stephen's Church, 1525 Newton St. NW, WDC. Listen and dance to the music of Latin band Accion Divina, hear about Maryknoll's work in El Salvador, and remember the martyrs of violence on the 32nd anniversary of the death of Archbishop Oscar Romero. All proceeds from this evening will benefit Maryknoll Lay Missioners: a Catholic organization inspired by the mission of Jesus to live and work with poor communities in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, responding to basic needs and helping to create a more just and compassionate world. Visit www.maryknollogc.org.

] – The Rebuilding Gaza Fundraiser takes place on Sat., Mar. 24 at 7 PM at St. Stephen's Church, 1525 Newton St. NW, WDC.  There will be a real-time address by George Galloway, poetry readings and a musical performance. More than three years have passed since the mass destruction of the Gaza Strip in the Israeli massacre: Operation Cast Lead. Aid has arrived too infrequently and disproportionate for the constant demand of the struggling people, and Gaza remains a humanitarian crisis that the world is forgetting. The fundraising will be for the VivaPalestina Return Convoy departing on April 22. Admission is $25, children get in for free.

] – Be at the Recall Walker - The Party on Sat., Mar. 24 from 8:30 PM through Sun., Mar. 25 at 2 AM at The Rev House, 3313 17th St. NW, WDC.  Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin has been a leader in attacking unions and other progressive groups. Make a donation for United Wisconsin. Go to http://www.unitedwisconsin.com/jan17.

] – Usually, the Baltimore Ethical Society, 306 W. Franklin St., Suite 102, Baltimore, MD 21201-4661, meets on Sundays, and generally there is a speaker and discussion from 10:30 to 11:30 AM.  On Sun., Mar. 25, the topic is "Problem Solving with Interests not Positions," and it will be addressed by Iris Woodard, RNCS, ANP, Nurse Practitioner, Kaiser Permanente.  The ability to communicate effectively has been said to be exactly proportional to the ability to negotiate effectively. While not without controversy, the interest-based approach, also termed principled negotiation, has been used widely and well as a union negotiating tool. This approach – whose core elements include information-sharing, creative exploration, and working toward mutually beneficial solutions – continues to be extrapolated successfully to many other situations. Call 410-581-2322 or visit www.baltimoreethicalsociety.org.

] – Maryland Bridges for Peace welcomes you to stand for peace Sundays from noon (or thereabouts) to 1 PM on the Spa Creek Bridge in Annapolis.  Contact Lucy at 410-263-7271 or mdbridgesforpeace@toadmail.com. Du Bois, Inclusion and Power, and Hugh Taft-Morales, leader of the BES, will lead the conversation, which is the third installment of a series about some of the most important thinkers connected to humanism and freethought.

] – Speak Out on Sun., Mar. 25 at a forum of candidates in Maryland's sixth congressional district, the only one in the state considered competitive.  The forum will take place at the Germantown campus of Montgomery College. The Republicans will debate at 1 PM, and the Democrats at 4 PM.  Fund Our Communities is trying to get a critical mass of people opposed to war to attend these debates in order to challenge the candidates and insist that they take a stand for peace. It doesn't matter if you don't live in that district--you can and should go! Make your voice heard.

] – Lee Stout will talk about his book "A Matter of Simple Justice: The Untold Story of Barbara Hackman Franklin and A Few Good Women" (Pennsylvania State University Libraries, $24.95) on Sun., Mar. 25 at 1 PM at Politics and Prose, 5015 Connecticut Ave. NW, WDC 20008.  Call 202-364-1919 or email books@politics-prose.com

] – Lessons in Movement Building: How it Happened in the Past Part 2 will be happening on Sun., Mar. 25 from 2 to 5 PM at the Institute for Policy Studies, 1112 16th St. NW, WDC. Every social movement entails many learning experiences, and movements from the past have a lot to teach us now. What can we glean from prior movements about how we structure ourselves, frame our message, reach out, target strategic objectives, and escalate towards success?  Join Robert Stephens for this exploration. Go to https://www.facebook.com/events/256813797739869/.

Cardin Memorial Lecture at Loyola University Maryland. Krondorfer's lecture will explore themes from visual books he created with artist Karen Baldner to address the legacy of the Shoah (Hebrew word for "Holocaust") on their lives in the United States. NW, WDC 20001.  "Precious Knowledge" is timely as the nation turns its focus toward a wave of anti-immigration legislation. Along with their harsh anti-immigrant stance, Arizona lawmakers abolished Ethnic Studies classes. The film provides an insider's perspective to a historic battle over civil rights as the student leaders in Tucson High fight to save their classes. Go to  http://www.preciousknowledgefilm.com/.
