3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

 

To join the ORGANIZING List, please send your name, group affiliation, city and email address to donmuller@msn.com.  Different local chapters of a national organization are encouraged to subscribe.  

 

THE NOTICES LIST will include only notices of NCNR actions and related information and is open to any interested person to subscribe.  It will be moderated to maintain focus & will include periodic notices about getting involved in NCNR national organizing.  To join the NOTICES List, send an email message to ncnrnotices-subscribe@lists.riseup.net. 5] – Brad Hathaway spearheads an effort to sell donated used stamps to raise money for different humanitarian causes around the world. Go to www.mattapoisettquakers.org, and click the link for the stamp ministry.  Carefully clip canceled postage stamps and send to Quaker Missions, PO Box 795, Mattapoisett, MA 02739. Send no small flag stamps or Liberty Bell Forever stamps.

 

6] – Catch the "Bringing the World Home" exhibit in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps!  The exhibit is in the UMBC Library Rotunda through the end of the semester and consists of 5 display cases featuring photos and artifacts from UMBC's faculty, staff and students who have served in the Peace Corps, including many current and alumni Shriver Peaceworker Fellows.  The center case features pieces from the Peace Corps founding era (a tribute to Sarge Shriver!) and the surrounding case highlight experiences from Africa, Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, and the Americas.  If you are coming from off campus, give Joby Taylor a call at (410) 455-6398, and he will give you a tour.

 

7] – Starting Mon., May 2 through Tues., May 3, observe the 120th Anniversary of Rerum Novarum: Church, Labor, and the New Things of the Modern World at the Przybyla Center, Catholic University of America.  The symposium is free and open to the public, but registration is requested so lunch can be provided to all: go to http://ipr.cua.edu/RN120th.cfm or call 202-319-5999   The event is sponsored by The Institute for Policy Research & Catholic Studies, and the keynote addresses will be made by His Eminence Peter Cardinal Turkson and President, Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and Mr. John Sweeney, President Emeritus, AFL-CIO.  There will be panels of experts. 

8] – CISPES organized Protesta y Teatro / Protest & Street Theater @ World Bank, 1818 H St. NW [at Pennsylvania Ave.] on Mon., May 2 at noon.  Use the Farragut West (Blue/Orange) or Farragut North (Red Line).  On May 2, a US gold mining corporation will be inside the World Bank suing El Salvador for millions - for defending their land, water & people. 9] – On Mon., May 2 at 12:30 PM, as part of the Public Citizen Speaker Series, hear U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chair, Gregory Jaczko, at Public Citizen, 1600 20th St. NW, WDC, at 20th and Q Sts.  His talk will center around his agency's response to the continuing nuclear crisis in Japan, as well as the public's renewed safety concerns about the U.S. fleet of aging nuclear power plants, 23 of which share the same General Electric design as the ones at Fukushima. An NRC commissioner since 2005, Jaczko was appointed chair by President Obama in May 2009. 11] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland's Super Max Prison, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  Recently death row was moved out of Baltimore, but it was decided to continue the vigil. The next one is scheduled for Mon., May 2. Call 410-366-1637.

13] – On Mon., May 2 at 7 PM, there is a panel discussion at the Univ. of Maryland, 1104 South Campus Commons Building #1, College Park: Beyond WikiLeaks: The Implications for Government Secrecy, Transparency and Accountability.  This is in celebration of World Press Freedom Day.  Go to www.beyondtheclassroom.umd.edu/filmseries.html.

15] – THE ALEXANDRIA DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE PRESENTS: AN IMMIGRATION FORUM on Mon., May 2 from 7 to 10 PM at T.C.WILLIAMS HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM, 3330 KING St., ALEXANDRIA, VA.  The Forum will explore local, state, and national aspects of the immigration issue and the struggles of undocumented persons in the United States, with questions and answers to follow. Attendees will be invited to participate in smaller discussion groups after the Q & A to examine some issues in more depth before reconvening and sharing insights gained shortly thereafter.

The speakers are Sindy Benavides, director, Community Outreach, Democratic National Committee, Adrienne DerVartanian, senior attorney, Farmworker Justice, Jorge Figueredo, director, Racial Justice and Immigrant Rights Project, ACLU, and Tram Nguyen, deputy director, Virginia New Majority.

16] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM, and the meetings now take place at Max's residence.  The agenda will include the U.S. Mayors Conference in Baltimore, June 17-21, the MUPJ conference, the First Thursday demo and other items.  Call Max at 410-366-1637 or email mobuszewski at verizon.net.

 

17] – There is a vigil to say "War Is Not the Answer" each Tuesday since September 11, 2001 at 4806 York Road. Join this ongoing vigil.  The next vigil is May 3 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

19] – On Tues., May 3 at Union Baptist Church, 1219 Druid Hill Ave., Baltimore, MD 21217- Near Dolphin St. & Druid Hill – there will be a 6 PM reception. At 7 PM, Deputy Modesto Ruiz from Venezuela will discuss "The Civil Rights Struggle in Venezuela." He is the president of the subcommittee that deals with the rights of Afro-Venezuelans in the Venezuelan Congress, and was responsible for drafting a national law against racial discrimination and intolerance that is expected to be passed this May. 20] – On Tues., May 3 at 7 PM, Ralph Nader will speak at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, 400 Cathedral, Baltimore 21201.  His latest book is a novel ONLY THE SUPER-RICH CAN SAVE US.  Go to www.prattlibrary.org.

 

21] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore and others are hosting another planning meeting on Tues., May 3 at 7 PM to prepare for the U.S. Conference of Mayors Conference in Baltimore from June 17 through June 21.  This meeting will take place at Govans-Boundary Church, 5210 York Rd. St.—park behind the church.  Representatives of organizations concerned about the cutbacks in social services, the wars in the Middle East and the need to raise taxes on the Forces of Greed are welcome to attend.  If you are unable to attend, but would like to get involved in strategizing for the Mayors Conference, call Max at 410-366-1637 or email mobuszewski at verizon.net.
