JHU President Ron Daniels renounce all weapons contracts

Ronald J. Daniels

President, Johns Hopkins University
242 Garland Hall
3400 N. Charles St.
Baltimore, MD 21218

(410) 516-8068 or president@jhu.edu

Dear President Daniels:

We are delivering this letter to you on the fourth anniversary of the United Nations Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons [TPNW] when it entered into force on January 22, 2021, prohibiting the development, acquisition, possession, use or threat of use of nuclear weapons for those countries that have ratified it.  For forty years now, Maryland anti-nuke and anti-war organizations have called on Johns Hopkins University to end all military research projects.  More recently, students at JHU are echoing our call.  The Hopkins Justice Collective is calling for the university to demilitarize: “In one year alone, Johns Hopkins received more than $1.47 billion in US Department of Defense [sic] funding for the research, development and testing of US military programs and weapons, primarily through the Applied Physics Laboratory [APL].”

We concur with the Collective’s call for divestment from the following companies: “Elbit, Blackrock, Northrop Grumman, Palantir, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin and Google.” And we look forward to future efforts of the Hopkins Justice Collective.

In 2019, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons [ICAN] issued a report  “Schools of Mass Destruction: American Universities in the U.S. Nuclear Weapons Complex” that details the ways in which roughly 50 American colleges and universities are supplying the scientific, technical and human capital necessary to maintain and expand U.S. weapons of mass destruction. Johns Hopkins University had the dubious distinction of being #1.  We are calling on you, as the president of a prestigious university, to contact the White House to welcome the Treaty and to affirm a plan to reduce the United States nuclear arsenal with the ultimate intention of the elimination of all US nuclear weapons.  Your call on the US government would be a positive step towards negotiation of a comprehensive agreement on the achievement and permanent maintenance of a world free of nuclear weapons.  According to a ICAN report, in 2020 the nine nuclear-armed states spent $72.6 billion on nuclear weapons, with the U.S. leading at $37.4 billion, or $70,881 per minute.  Imagine what could be accomplished if this wasteful spending was redirected to social programs.

Currently, the U.S. is pursuing a nuclear weapons build-up which was launched by the Obama-Biden administration that is expected to cost at least $1.7 trillion by 2046. This includes large spending increases on a controversial low-yield smaller nuclear warhead, the total replacement of the intercontinental ballistic missile force, new B-21 strategic bombers, B-52 upgrades, and more destructive nuclear warheads. JHU was awarded a $530,000,000 contract in support of the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent [sic] weapon system. We would rather see the total elimination of the country's land-based nuclear missiles, as these weapons are both an enormous waste of money and—most crucially—an existential threat to humankind. The ICBMs greatly increase the chances that a false alarm or miscalculation will result in nuclear war.

JHU is also part of the Biden administration's upgrades on the nuclear weapons arsenal through its nuclear weapons research and contributes to the enormous risk presented by nuclear waste from weapons manufacturing piling up at more than 150 sites across the country. The cost is prohibitive to do some type of clean up. Much of the waste will have to remain "safely stored" for 10,000 years or more.

We would appreciate if a small delegation could meet with you to assist you in the process of disinvesting from  weapons research.  Your university is complicit in the threat posed by nuclear weapons and the environmental crisis presented by nuclear waste.  We want to help you and the university to do the right thing.  Imagine the praise and prestige the university would receive because you renounced weapons research.  Your legacy would be profoundly enhanced.  We look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Max Obuszewski, Baltimore Nonviolence Center, 431 Notre Dame Lane, Apt. 206, Baltimore , MD 21212

There are no words to describe the devastating pain of the past year in which the Israeli military has killed over 44,000 Palestinians in Gaza, including more than 17,000 children. The International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court have both declared that Israel must stop the genocidal acts being committed on the Palestinian people. And the U.S. government is actively supporting the Israeli military as it wreaks devastation on the over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza. JVP continues to come together as a political community in its daily half-hour to take action, Monday through Friday, for the past year. Join in and take collective action to demand an arms embargo to Israel, immediate end to the genocide, a lasting ceasefire and an end to Israeli siege, apartheid, occupation, and oppression of Palestinians and Lebanon. Discuss Medicare for All organizer training and public education campaigns in northern Virginia and plan other actions to ensure healthcare as a human right. The group meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month, and the meetings are open to all who support healthcare as a human right. We spend more per capita on healthcare than any other country in the world, but have little to show for that expenditure other than falling life expectancy, high maternal mortality, and increasing medical debt. This is why it is more important than ever that we turn this anger into action by organizing a nationwide grassroots movement in support of national, improved Medicare for All. This session will train new organizers about the causes of dysfunction in the US healthcare system, how Medicare for All legislation will work, and how to conduct local campaigns to build momentum for a universal single-payer healthcare system.

Trial should conclude for Two Long-Time Peace Activists in D.C. Superior Court for Lobbying Senate Staffers about Starvation in Gaza

Baltimore Nonviolence Center, 431 Notre Dame Lane, Apt. 206., Baltimore, MD 21212 Ph: 410-323-1607

PRESS RELEASE-FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 22, 2025

CONTACT: Max Obuszewski 443-761-5899 or mobuszewski2001 at Comcast dot net

Trial should conclude for Two Long-Time Peace Activists in D.C. Superior Court for Lobbying Senate Staffers about Starvation in Gaza

WHO:   Janice Sevre-Duszynska, an ordained Roman Catholic Womanpriest from Towson, Maryland, and Max Obuszewski, a long-time Baltimore activist, were arrested on April 9, 2024 with 51 other members of Christians for a Free Palestine in the Dirksen Senate Office Building cafeteria.  Sevre-Duszynska and Obuszewski declined to pay out and were charged with D.C. Code 22-1307[a] Crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.

Sevre-Duszynska, an ESL teacher in Kentucky, was arrested November 18, 2001 at Fort Benning, Georgia for protesting US involvement with death squads in Central America. She then served a three-month sentence in in federal women’s prison in Lexington. KY.

Obuszewski has been arrested for protesting injustice at the National Security Agency, the Capitol, in Senate and Congressional offices, the White House, the Central Intelligence Agency and many other locales.  These arrests may have led to his being under covert surveillance by the Maryland State Police, Baltimore Police Department Red Squad and other police groups in 2005 and 2006.  He has spent time in several jails.

WHAT: The two defendants were disturbed by the Hamas attack on Israeli noncombatants on October 7, 2023.  And they were even more disturbed by the ongoing attack on Palestinian noncombatants in Gaza.  Like the International Court of Justice, the defendants believe there is a plausible case of genocide taking place in Gaza. And they went to a cafeteria to highlight the fact that the people of Gaza are starving. Obuszewski was part of a human rights delegation organized by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee to Israel/Occupied Palestine during the first intifada. He went to the Dirksen cafeteria to lobby Senate staffers. Sevre-Duszynska taught ESL to Palestinian students, and as a Womanpriest prayed that the starvation in Gaza would end. They were arrested.

Their trial began in October and continued into November, presided by Judge Risa Berkower. John Roberts, the prosecutor, has argued that the defendants were part of a group.  The defendants, represented by Mark Goldstone and Tammy Thom, argued evidence most be presented against each defendant.   A hearing will be held to make arguments for and against a Motion for Judgment of Acquittal to determine the verdict.

WHEN: Wednesday, January 23, 2025 at 10:30 AM

WHERE:  Courtroom 310 in District of Columbia Superior Court, 500 Indiana Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20001

WHY:  There is an ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip orchestrated by the Israeli government.  Of particular concern to Christians for a Free Palestine, starvation is rampant among the Palestinians in Gaza. Some of the participants publicly prayed for peace across Gaza and Palestine, and carried banners that said “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9 in the Christian Bible) and “Woe to you who slay the hungry.” The call was for nourishing food to be sent to Gaza and an end to U.S. support including U.S. armaments.  Also the group denounced Christian Zionism, and demanded that Congress take action for a permanent ceasefire, an end to U.S. arms to Israel, restoration of aid to UNRWA, and the release of all captives.

Utilizing their First Amendment rights in the Dirksen cafeteria, Sevre-Duszynska was there to pray and Obuszewski to lobby Senate staffers to convince their respective senators to speak out against starvation and to call for humanitarian aid to pour into the Gaza Strip.  Both defendants have been long-time lobbyists of their elected officials.  Unfortunately their lobby visits are usually unsuccessful.  However, they are quite aware that staff members are more receptive and more progressive. So they went to the cafeteria where staffers have lunch to impress upon them in their own way to convince their senators to condemn starvation in the Gaza Strip.  ####

5] – Another book to consider purchasing is Male Supremacy in the Catholic Church: An Insider’s View by Roy Bourgeois. His new book is both memoir and position-paper, and it makes the case that the Roman Catholic Church is a corrupt system that spits out truth-tellers. The crime he was excommunicated for was attending the ordination ceremony of Janice Sevre-Duszynska in Lexington, Kentucky, in August 2008. The ordination was under the auspices of the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests.  The Vatican’s response has been to excommunicate any woman who has the audacity to see herself as a priest equal to a male priest. You can purchase a copy from Amazon or by Kindle.

Here are two quotes to contemplate: “I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men. She is to keep silent.” – Timothy 1, 2:12-13.  “If the patriarchy that dominates the church is not dismantled and women are not treated as equals, the church will continue to diminish and, eventually, die.” – Roy Bourgeois.

Shayla is a former Teachers Union shop steward, has led the fight on the school board for care not policing in our schools, and fought back against developers to get strong project labor agreements on public school projects. This race will decide the balance of power on a County Council split 5 – 5 between corporate developer interests and progressives. Establishment Democrats are opposing Shayla with everything they have.

8] – The U. S. immigration system needs fundamental repair, but not in manner chosen by the new administration. We must better incorporate ten million undocumented immigrants into our country, most of whom have lived here constructively for more than a decade! They do not deserve to be treated as criminals. We must do better to protect those seeking asylum. Many are fleeing life threatening situations exacerbated by our country’s insatiable thirst for drugs and our global status as the top gun manufacturer. Hugh Taft-Morales explores options for compassionate, legal, and ethical responses to increasingly chaotic migratory patterns worldwide. Taft-Morales serves as Leader of the Philadelphia Ethical Society and the Baltimore Ethical Society and is a member of the Ethical Action Committee of the American Ethical Union (AEU).  To receive a Zoom invitation, please email president@bmorethical.org.

9] – USCPR [contact@uscpr.org] on Sun., Jan. 26 at 1PM ET, join the #BoycottChevron Weekend of Action training. Learn how to fight back against Chevron's destruction. Israeli settlers are attacking Palestinian communities across the West Bank, while Palestinians in Gaza search for their loved ones' remains under the rubble. An executive order from Trump lifted sanctions on violent Israeli settlers.  When elected officials fail to act, we have to target corporations that make occupation and genocide possible. .Chevron supplies natural gas to Israel's electricity grid, powering military bases and settlements.   But Chevron's destruction doesn't stop in Palestine. In Los Angeles, where climate-fueled fires just destroyed the historically Black community of Altadena, Chevron's massive fossil fuel emissions—3.2% of global emissions—helped intensify the devastation. Organizers envision a future with lower rates, community control, greener energy, and no shareholder influence. Plenty of big cities already operate under this model, like Austin, Seattle, and the entire state of Nebraska.

We Power organizers will provide a brief presentation on the current state of energy distribution in DC, the grave ills that Pepco and the investor-owned utility model have wrought on working-class people, and We Power DC’s campaign for municipalization. 59] – Hideaki Ito [silentfalloutproject.org@gmail.com] wants to give you an update about the Silent Fallout Project. It has been more than five months since Silent Fallout was screened in Baltimore. He wants to express his sincere gratitude to all who supported the project during its US tour and hosted screenings. The film was shown in 20 locations over 43 days to over 600 people. The film aims to raise awareness about the reality of radiation contamination across the American continent and how many Americans are unknowingly exposed. It helps people understand that they are impacted by this issue and then use the US as a starting point to spark a global conversation about radiation.

Currently, the project is facing a deficit of $100K, and its future is uncertain. However, Ito is determined to raise funds and continue its activities. In 2025, which marks the 80th year since the birth of the atomic bomb, there is a plan to embark on a European screening tour, produce a new film, conduct a second US tour, and host a large-scale event on August 6th.
