4] - Suzanne Fontanesi and Jeff Ross are in the beginning stages of renovating the basement of their house for purposes of bringing in a volunteer (targeting young adults in discernment mode), starting next fall. They are trying to grow a Catholic Worker House in Irvington (West Baltimore). In a nutshell, there is a lot that a volunteer could do in that neighborhood/Baltimore, in addition to prayer and daily community living and in addition to plugging into all the good work that people are already doing in and around Baltimore (and beyond).  If you think you might know of anyone who might be interested in starting a conversation with them about becoming such a volunteer/community member, please contact Jeff/Suzanne at 443-690-6872.

5] – Max is in need of a garage or a storage space.  Any suggestions would be welcome.  Contact Max at 410-323-1607 or mobuszewski2001 at Comcast dot net.

6] – Is there a woman in the Baltimore area who does house cleaning?  This assignment would be on an irregular basis with several hours per week.  Contact Max at 410-323-1607 or mobuszewski2001 at Comcast dot net.

7] – Usually, the Baltimore Ethical Society, 2521 St. Paul St., Baltimore 21218, meets on Sundays, and generally there is a speaker and discussion at 10:30 AM.  On Sun., June 27, the subject is “Reflections on the Parable of the Sower and Octavia Butler.”  Hugh Taft-Morales will share his comments about, and solicit member reflections on Octavia Butler’s book. This New York Times bestseller offers much food for thought as it touches on the future, climate change, race, and religion.  Taft-Morales serves as Leader of the Philadelphia Ethical Society and the Baltimore Ethical Society and is a member of the Ethical Action Committee of the American Ethical Union (AEU).  The Zoom link and more info can be obtained at PRESIDENT@BMORETHICAL.ORG.

8] – Get with The Colombian Strike: A Historical and Political Conversation on Sun., June 27 from 1 to 2:30 PM EDT. Visit http://masspeaceaction.org/event/the-colombian-strike-a-historical-and-political-conversation/.

On April 28 of 2021, Colombians organized a massive general strike against the neoliberal regime of President Iván Duque, galvanized around his deeply regressive tax reform. The strike, however, has a longer history. Outraged by the ongoing extrajudicial killings of social leaders, enforced disappearance of peasants, continuous reports of state crimes—named in Colombia with the euphemism of false positives—and the constant intimidation that especially black and indigenous people continue to face in their territories, when seeking to protect them from state-sponsored extractivism, the people took to the streets. Indigenous people’s historical Mingas, black people’s continuous mobilization to force the state to respect their constitutional right to prior consultation, as well as the massive student movement around the MANE (Mesa Amplia Nacional Estudiantil), and the general strike of 2019, are all important antecedents to the ongoing strike of 2021.

Kevin Young will be moderating the event. Young is a Professor of History at UMASS Amherst. Andrés Fabián Henao Castro is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Angélica Maria Bernal is Associate Professor of Political Science at UMass Amherst and faculty affiliate with the Center for Latin American, Latinx and Caribbean Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

9] – Justice Democrats Organizing Team [us@list.justicedemocrats.com] wants you to join Nina Turner.  Now’s the time to ramp up for the 2022 primaries. Around this time two years ago, Jamaal Bowman launched his campaign to unseat longtime corporate incumbent Eliot Engel. It took a year to build a campaign that could defeat all the money and establishment backing, but it happened. There are already four progressive working-class primary challengers ready to go, and there will be more.  One of them is Nina Turner, national co-chair of Bernie Sanders’ 2020 campaign and Justice Democrat running for Ohio’s 11th Congressional District.  Sign up for a huge national field launch event: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UhXqdcfMTwqbVC-0QDcEDQ on Sun., June 27 at 2 PM ET.

10] – Dr. Bill for Progressive Democrats of America [info@pdamerica.org] is alerting you to a Sicko Film Stars Reunion during Healthcare Emergency Town Hall on Sun., June 27 at 4 PM ET. RSVP at https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0tceuhrzsvHdymeeZRwb-i7X50FJa-HMR4. Reflect on the challenge of #HealthcareJustice as was first brought to the attention of many of us back in the tumultuous early 2000s, and what #COVID19 tells us now about the even more urgent need for #MedicareForAll.  Fourteen years ago in 2007, a group of Americans appeared in Michael Moore’s award winning documentary, SiCKO. Some were patients damaged by the U.S. profit driven healthcare industry, some lost people they loved to healthcare system greed, and still others worked in communities where the ravages of that greed took a terrible human toll. These were real people, real Americans who didn’t make money from their appearances, and nearly all of them continue to work in their communities to see health finally become a human right for all.

Rev. Andy Bales, Adrian Montgomery, Reggie Cervantes, and Julie Pierce-Waite will join the call for powerful reflections on their experiences and continuing efforts in the years since SiCKO. PDA National Advisory Board Chair Donna Smith will lead the SiCKO reunion panel discussion. Also guest speaker, author, and advocate Nicolas J. S. (Sandy) Davies will speak about Vaccine Internationalism.

11] – Sana, CODEPINK [info@codepink.org] is inviting you on Sun., June 27 at 6 PM ET to a Peacemaker Salon! This will be an opportunity to learn more about what CODEPINK has been accomplishing in the last month, and to ask questions about its current campaigns. Danaka Katovich will be discussing the Middle East Campaign and Peace Collective. And Madison Tang will discuss CODEPINK's China is Not Our Enemy campaign. These presentations will be followed by a quick Q&A. RSVP at https://www.codepink.org/06272021?utm_campaign=salon_reminder&utm_medium=email&utm_source=codepink.

12] –   DNC Environment and Climate Crisis Council [info@dncclimate.org] wants you to join Rep. Andy Levin for a Town Hall on Ending Fossil Fuel Subsidies on Sun., June 27 at 6 PM ET.  RSVP and submit your questions now: bit.ly/endffhandouts.  Check at https://actionnetwork.org/events/why-and-why-now-ending-the-fossil-fuel-handouts?link_id=2&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-youre-invited-council-town-hall-this-sunday-on-ending-fossil-fuel-subsidies&email_referrer=email_1215933___subject_1606103&email_subject=rsvp-now-join-rep-andy-levin-for-our-town-hall-on-ending-fossil-fuel-subsidies.

The first six months of the Biden Administration have given us hope. Saving our planet is now a presidential priority. But there is much work to be done. When DC subsidizes fossil fuels to the tune of $15 billion every year, it pays for the destruction of people, planet, and future. And the burden of pollution from pipelines, fracking, and oil and gas projects falls disproportionately on Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities.

13] – Jim Zogby [jzogby@aaiusa.org] is inviting you to share conversation with Rev. Jesse Jackson & Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison on Sun., June 27 at 8 PM ET, hosted by the Arab American Institute. AAI will honor the Reverend Jesse Jackson with a Gibran Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious honor will be presented by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Join the celebration at https://www.aaiusa.org/library/2021-leadership-summit?emci=8abfbbbb-ecd4-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&emdi=a1cd220d-20d5-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&ceid=389907. This event is part of AAI's Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Leadership Summit. All month the Gibran Summit has hosted transformative conversations to help us through these challenging times and refocus our advocacy for the challenges ahead. Now, it's time to reflect and celebrate how far we've come as a community. Purchase a ticket with a donation of $60.

14] – There is a weekly Pentagon Peace Vigil from 7 to 8 AM on Mondays, since 1987, outside the Pentagon Metro stop.  The next vigil is June 28 and it is sponsored by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker.  Email artlaffin@hotmail.com or call 202-882-9649.  The vigil will be outside the Pentagon's south Metro entrance and in the designated "protest zone" behind bicycle fences across from the entrance to the Metro.  By Metro, take Yellow Line and get out at the "Pentagon" stop. Do not go to the Pentagon City stop! Go up south escalators and turn left and walk across to protest area. By car from D.C. area, take 395 South and get off at Exit 8A-Pentagon South Parking. Take slight right onto S. Rotary Rd. at end of ramp and right on S. Fern St. Then take left onto Army Navy Dr. You can "pay to park" on Army Navy Dr.,  and there is meter parking one block on right on Eads St. Payment for both of these spots begin at 8 AM.  No cameras are allowed on Pentagon grounds. Restrooms are located inside Marriott Residence Inn on corner of S. Fern and Army Navy Dr.

15] – Ellen, Sunrise [team@sunrisemovement.org] is making the point "No climate, no deal."  Anything less than a robust jobs and climate package is a death sentence for her generation. Join Sunrise in D.C. on Mon., June 28 to tell Biden: No Climate, No Deal. NO COMPROMISE NO EXCUSES. If you're already sure you're coming, fill out this registration form instead: smvmt.org/june28.  Check out https://action.sunrisemovement.org/a/june-28-dc?ms=email_20210611_dc-action-senators_ellen&emci=c76e5579-ddca-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&emdi=420f9924-deca-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&ceid=177631.

On July 8, 1996, as a result of an initiative led by civil society, the International Court of Justice delivered an advisory opinion affirming that the threat or use of nuclear weapons is generally illegal, and that there is an obligation to achieve global nuclear disarmament.  Inspired by this historic case, World's Youth for Climate Justice, supported by the Normandy Chair for Peace, has launched a campaign to take the issue of climate change to the International Court of Justice (otherwise known as the World Court).  UNFOLD ZERO encourages you to find out more about the initiative, and how you can help ensure its success. Join a webinar on Mon., June 28 at 9 AM ET, the first one of which will discuss the role of climate litigation, introduce the campaign for an ICJ case on the climate, and explore lessons learned from the historic ICJ advisory opinion on nuclear weapons. Register at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_aJD1026zSzy3U5WRiAJL-A.

To be continued.
