21] –The Nation is holding a discussion on Mon., April 19 at 5 PM ET on US-Cuba relations under the Biden administration and an update on economic reform, entrepreneurship and current events in Cuba. Hear about the island’s impressive response to Covid-19 and Cuba’s effort to develop its own vaccine to defeat the virus. April 19th marks the 60th anniversary of the defeat of the CIA-led invasion at the Bay of Pigs, and nearly 4 years since the Trump Administration began to roll back the historic normalization of relations that included freedom to travel, started by President Obama. Discuss the connection between ending the Trump-era sanctions—including travel restrictions— and Cuba’s ability to emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic contractions it has caused.

Historian and Nation magazine Cuba tour leader Peter Kornbluh will share insight on Biden’s approach to Cuba and US-Cuba relations going forward. Economist Ricardo Torres will discuss the ongoing economic reform process, including currency unification and private sector expansion. Lauren Fajardo will share her story as an entrepreneur in Cuba and provide analysis on ongoing policy changes regarding Cuba’s private sector. Collin Laverty, president of Cuba Educational Travel, who has lived in Cuba during the pandemic and participated in the vaccine trials there, will share his experience and moderate the discussion. 23] -- Maryland Poor People's Campaign (MD PPC) [maryland@poorpeoplescampaign.org] reminds of the Maryland Monthly Monday Meeting on April 19 at 7 PM.  Tackle the injustice of ecological devastation for Earth Week and reflect on environmental justice in breakouts. 24] – The Peace Action Prince George's and Montgomery County chapters are jointly showing a film RAM KE NAAM (IN THE NAME OF GOD) on Mon., April 19 at 7 PM ET (free!) about how right wing extremism and religious hatred in India has led to mob violence. It will be followed by a panel discussion. Register here:  https://tinyurl.com/ReelnMealApr. Reel and Meal is a monthly film series, third Monday of the month.  Due to Covid, this series has moved to a Zoom format.  Email reelandmeal@newdealcafe.com.  The mob violence demolished a Muslim mosque in 1992. The film shows how destructive political rhetoric can be, just as the speeches and rallies surrounding the 2020 presidential election culminated in the storming of the US Capitol on January 6. The depiction of animosity between Hindus and Muslims in this film also raises questions for us about incidents of religious and ethnic hatred here in the U.S.  Tasnuva Khan with Peace Action Montgomery County will lead the discussion following the film, with Ruchira Gupta and Sana Qutubuddin as panelists. Ruchira is a journalist and activist, and the founder of Apne Aap, an NGO focused on women’s rights. Her journalism career has focused on gender rights, armed conflicts in India, caste conflict, and minority issues. Sana is the National Advocacy Executive for the Indian American Muslim Council, and has written extensively on Hindu nationalism in India and the United States.
