3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

 

To join the ORGANIZING List, please send your name, group affiliation, city and email address to donmuller@msn.com.  Different local chapters of a national organization are encouraged to subscribe.  

 

THE NOTICES LIST will include only notices of NCNR actions and related information and is open to any interested person to subscribe.  It will be moderated to maintain focus & will include periodic notices about getting involved in NCNR national organizing.  To join the NOTICES List, send an email message to ncnrnotices-subscribe@lists.riseup.net. 5] – Brad Hathaway spearheads an effort to sell donated used stamps to raise money for different humanitarian causes around the world. 6] – Anne Feeney has recently been diagnosed with a lung tumor and will not be able to work for some time. She is looking for a thousand friends to each donate $50 (no more than that). 7] – Help with the 10/10 Pledge Collecting at Belvedere Square on Thurs., Aug. 19 from 6 to 9 PM. The Baltimore Climate Action Team will be there during the summer music performance to get people to sign the 10/10 “Get to Work” on clean energy pledge. By taking the pledge people agree to make the switch to clean energy in their own lives and to urge their elected officials to help our whole society make the switch by passing strong climate and energy legislation. 12] – A vigil for Justice in Palestine/Israel (now in its 8th year) takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM at 19th & JFK Blvd., Philadelphia (across from Israeli Consulate.  It is sponsored by Bubbies & Zaydes (Grandparents) for Peace in the Middle East. 13] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., Aug. 20 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings. 

 

14] – SHED LIGHT ON US WAR CASUALTIES: FROM THE FRONT LINE TO THE BACK DOOR of Walter Reed Army Medical Center (North Gate), every Friday night, from 7 to 9 PM in the middle of the 7100 block of Georgia Ave., NW. 15] – Introduction to Permaculture is an introductory workshop the night before the Transition Towns Training.  It will be Fri., Aug. 20 from 7 to 9 PM at HEATHCOTE COMMUNITY, Freeland, MD 21053.  The Transition Town Training Building Resilient Communities for a Post-Carbon World is on for Sat., Aug. 21 and Sun., Aug. 22, each training will be from 9 AM to 5 PM, hosted by SCHOOL OF LIVING at HEATHCOTE. There is a sliding scale fee from $200 to $300. Meals & lodging are available at extra cost.  The Transition movement is a grassroots initiative that seeks to build sustainable community to counter the inevitable challenges of climate change, oil depletion, and economic instability.  Dependence on fossil fuels must be ended. The training is co-sponsored by the Eastern Pennsylvania Permaculture Guild.

 

Shaktari Belew is the initiator of Transition Town Ashland, Oregon, the 12th official Transition Initiative in the USA.  She is the founder and executive director of the Honoring All Life Foundation and its educational arm, the Thrivability Institute.  Mario M. 16] – Meet Emory Douglass an artist and former Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party.  He will speak and offer a showing of his revolutionary art.  Donations will support the defense fund of Eddie Conway.  The American Friends Service Committee is hosting the reception on Fri., Aug. 20 from 7 to 9 PM at the CORK GALLERY, 1601 Guilford Ave. There is a request for a $10 donation to attend the reception with light refreshments, and limited edition collectible prints will be on sale. Douglas worked with the Panthers from 1967 until the organization was disbanded in the 1980s. His graphic art was featured in most issues of the newspaper THE BLACK PANTHER. Marshall “Eddie” Conway is a former member of the Baltimore Black Panther Party, who was convicted of murdering a Baltimore Police officer.  His supporters do not believe he received a fair trial, and he remains imprisoned. 17] –  There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. 18] – Citizens Planning and Housing Association is urging you to shop at the W. Baltimore Farmer's Market on Sat., Aug. 21 from 8 AM to noon and every Saturday through Nov. 20. 19] – The Baltimore Climate Action Team will be at the Waverly Farmers Market to get people to sign the 10/10 “Get to Work” on clean energy pledge. 22] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. Go to www.ccpeace.org. Email ccpeacemovement@aol.com.

 

23] – There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Aug. 21. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It.--Psalms 34:14." 24] –  You are invited to attend a “Public Forum on The Jobs Crisis and How to Respond ” on Sat., Aug. 21 from 2 to 4 PM at the Free School, 1323 N. 26] – Gimme Shelter Productions continues to do consciousness/fundraising events about the plight of the homeless and for the shelters that serve them. On Sat., Aug. 21 at 7:30 PM, the group winds up its season at the Hamilton Arts Gallery 5502 Harford Rd. The featured performers will be Marcus Colasurdo, Suzanne X¹, In The Clear, Jasaga, Alan Barysh and Ron Williams in a memorable evening of music and poetry.  Attendees are asked to make a $5 donation. 33] – There is a weekly Pentagon Peace Vigil from 7 to 8 AM on Mondays, since 1987, outside the Pentagon Metro stop.  The next vigil is Mon., Aug. 23, and it is sponsored by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker.  Call 202-882-9649.

35] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s Super Max Prison, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  Recently death row was moved out of Baltimore, but it was decided to continue the vigil. The next one is scheduled for Mon., Aug. 23.  Call 410-366-1637.

 

36] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM, and the meetings now take place at Max’s residence.  The next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 23.  The agenda will review the visit to John Sarbanes’ office and discuss antiwar activities.  Contact Max at 410-366-1637 or email mobuszewski at verizon.net for directions.  

 

37] – There is a vigil to say "War Is Not the Answer" each Tuesday since September 11, 2001 at 4806 York Road. Join this ongoing vigil.  The next vigil is Aug. 24 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Note participants will make a call for clean energy.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

 Appalachia Rising, an event which will take place in Washington D.C., Sept. 25-27, 2010, is a national response to the poisoning of America’s water supply, the destruction of Appalachia's mountains, head water source streams, and communities through mountaintop removal coal mining. It follows a long history of social action for a just and sustainable Appalachia. Appalachia Rising strives to unite coalfield residents, grass roots groups, individuals, and national organizations to call for the abolition of mountaintop removal coal mining and demand that America’s water be protected from all forms of surface mining.

Appalachia Rising will consist of two events. First, the weekend conference, Sept. 25-26, Appalachia Rising, Voices from the Mountains will provide an opportunity to build or join the movement for justice in Appalachia through strategy discussions and share knowledge across regional and generational lines. The second event on Mon., Sept. 27 is the Appalachia Rising Day of Action, which will unify thousands in calling for an end to mountaintop removal and all forms of steep slope surface mining through a vibrant march and rally. An act of dignified nonviolent resistance will occur.  .

39] – Each Wednesday from 4:30 - 5:30 PM, the House of Grace Catholic Worker holds a weekly vigil for peace in Iraq outside the Phila. Federal Building, 6th & Market Sts. The next vigil is Aug. 25. Call 215-426-0364.

 

40] – Each Wednesday, the Northwest Greens hold a peace vigil from 7 to 8 PM outside the Borders Book Store, Germantown Ave. at Bethlehem Pike in Chestnut Hill, PA. The next vigil is Aug. 25. Call 215-843-4256 or email nwgreens@yahoo.com.

 

41] – On Wed., Aug. 25 from 7 to 9 PM, there will be a Council At Large Candidates Forum sponsored by the Justice and Advocacy Council of Montgomery County (Archdiocese of Washington) at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church, 9701 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD 20814.  The 14 candidates for the four at large county council seats will be asked questions and present their views on the economic and health services affecting the poor and vulnerable in the county in preparation for the Sept. 14 primary election. 

 

42] – The Crabshell Alliance will meet on Wed., Aug. 25 at 7:30 PM in a private home.  Call Max at 410-366-1637 for directions.  The mission of the Crabshell Alliance is to protest the construction of new nuclear reactors in Maryland, promote clean, safe, sustainable, and affordable energy, and educate the public about the hazards of nuclear power.
