Arrive/Log on by 5:45 PM as the program starts promptly at 6 PM. If attending in person, please come to the New Deal Café at 113 Centerway (Roosevelt Center) in Greenbelt.  The documentary film tells the story of Chris Buckley, a veteran and a former KKK leader, as he overcomes his antipathy toward Muslims and becomes an advocate for friendship and harmony among all people, echoing King’s words: “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” Daryl Johnson, an expert on domestic extremism with more than twenty-five years’ experience tracking radicalized groups for the US government, will lead the after-film discussion. His 2019 book, Hateland, dissects expanding forms of American hatred and radicalization, explains how extremists on both the far right and the far left use the same recruitment and radicalization techniques, and tells stories of individuals who reevaluated their extremist convictions and became deradicalized.

You are encouraged to enjoy a plant-based meal during the film to participate in socially responsible, environmentally sustainable, and animal safe lifestyle choices. The Reel and Meal at the New Deal Café is a free monthly film series, started in September 2007. For more information about this month’s film, contact Frank Gervasi 301 467 2418 or the Reel and Meal Facebook page:www.facebook.com/reelandmealNDC THIS MONTH’S REEL AND MEAL IS SPONSORED BY THE GREENBELT BAHA’I COMMUNITY. The film was chosen to reflect their Faith’s vision of the oneness of humanity.

22] – On Mon., Jan. 19 at 7 PM, the Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake are honoring Martin Luther King. Across the country, many Black and minority communities have long faced barriers to accessing safe, welcoming green spaces — and those disparities continue to shape physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being today. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, this Learning Lab invites us to look deeply at the intersection of faith, equity, and belonging in the outdoors. Together, we will explore the historical roots of exclusion in nature spaces, the lasting impacts on community health, and the powerful role people of faith can play in ensuring that everyone has access to the healing, renewing gift of creation. Participants will gain insights, language, and practical steps to support more equitable, inclusive outdoor spaces where all communities can thrive.
