Now is the time for determined struggle by the people to go all the way to demand: Trump/Pence #OUTNOW! Trump carries out a brazen war crime by assassinating a high ranking official of Iran, threatening more. He reminds the world that a dangerous bully heading a fascist regime has an itchy Twitter-finger on the nuclear button. The danger of all-out war remains even as Trump’s sanctions intensify the suffering of the Iranian people. See https://www.facebook.com/events/463418084546186/?event_time_id=463418091212852.

How do we think about the racial history of the United States in relation to present-day healthcare issues? We know that African-Americans suffer some of the most significant health disparities in the nation but how is America’s history of racial violence linked to this story? This talk and discussion will explore how the legacies of slavery and racial violence have affected and continue to affect the health of African-Americans to this day.  Check out https://www.facebook.com/events/583603399089595/.

64] – On Thurs., Jan. 23 from 6 to 8 PM, participate in US Government Still Spying on Dissent: A People’s Briefing, hosted by Defending Rights & Dissent and Institute for Policy Studies, 1301 Connecticut Ave., WDC 20036.  While claiming concerns with terrorism in the US, “Since 2010, the FBI has surveilled black activists and Muslim Americans, Palestinian solidarity and peace activists, Abolish ICE protesters, Occupy Wall Street, environmentalists, Cuba and Iran normalization proponents, and protesters at the Republican National Convention. And that is just the surveillance we know of” -Alice Speri, writer for The Intercept. Social justice activists, organizers, and the general public should turn out for this “People’s Briefing” to unpack the Fall 2019 report Still Spying on Dissent by Chip Gibbons, Policy Director at Defending Rights and Dissent. Fortify yourself with specific, factual information that prevents government and mainstream media coverage from trying to subvert truth and justice. However, sensationalized awareness campaigns and gross media representation often prevent us from identifying and supporting survivors of trafficking domestically and locally. This workshop defines modern-day human trafficking with an overview of trafficking in Maryland and Howard County. Participants will learn how to identify potential trafficking sites and victims as well risk factors that increase vulnerability. Additionally, participants will make connections between forced sexual exploitation, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence.

There will be time for questions after the presentation by HopeWorks. A portion of the $10 guest fee will be donated to this important local organization too. A light reception will follow the workshop. Go to https://www.facebook.com/events/2375057139288107/.
