29] – Get Money Out – Maryland is hosting a rally on Mon., Jan. 20 marking the 10th anniversary of the tragic Supreme Court Citizens United decision. RALLY FOR A DEMOCRACY AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION at 6:30 PM on MON., Jan. 20 at 90 COLLEGE AVENUE, ANNAPOLIS (CORNER OF ST. JOHN'S ST).  GMOM will observe the 10th Anniversary of Citizens United v. FEC, and members will visit legislators after the rally.  Go to https://www.getmoneyoutmd.org/coming_events.  The rally is co-sponsored by many groups including Our Revolution Maryland, Our Revolution Baltimore City/County, Maryland United for Peace and Justice, Peace Action Montgomery, Baltimore Nonviolence Center, Baltimore Peace Action and Prevent Nuclear War Maryland.

Just a few blocks from where the rally will be held, in what was Mann’s Tavern in Annapolis, 12 delegates from five states met in 1786 to discuss commercial problems of the new nation. Their call for a convention in Philadelphia resulted in the creation of The Constitution of the United States. It’s fitting, then, that a rally, calling for an amendment as defined in that Constitution, should be held in Annapolis, an amendment designed to correct mistakes those 12 delegates could not have foreseen, but the Constitution gave us the tools to correct.

Sen. Will Smith (District 20), Mike Tidwell of Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Pastor Delman Coates of Our Money will headline a dynamic group of speakers.  RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/events/397388211141919/.  Here are 4 reasons to have hope for a Democracy Amendment to the US Constitution: Maryland House Speaker Adrienne Jones and Senate President Bill Ferguson have both been strong supporters of the Democracy Amendment Resolution; Hedrick Smith's documentary "The Democracy Rebellion" - showing that grassroots activists like us are meeting success across the nation - was broadcast January 6 on WETA and will air on January 28 at 9 PM on WMPT; An official Massachusetts commission will soon issue a report favoring a Democracy Amendment to the Constitution, including use of the limited Article V convention and supporting strong language to end corporate constitutional rights; and The We the People amendment resolution will be introduced in the US Senate for the first time by Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts.

30] -- On Tues., Jan. 21 from at 10 AM, there is a Public Hearing on the Consent Decree with  Judge Bredar in U.S. District Court of Maryland, 101 W. Lombard St., Baltimore.  Then from 6 to 8 PM at the New Song Academy, 1530 Presstman St., Baltimore 21217, come to a Consent Decree Quarterly Forum & Meeting regarding the ‘Third Year Monitoring Plan.’  Visit https://www.facebook.com/events/518443445433489/.

31] – On Tues., Jan. 21 from 10 AM to noon, get over to the Disengaging from Violent Extremism, hosted by United States Institute of Peace, 2301 Constitution Ave. NW, WDC 20037.  See www.usip.org.  Governments and communities worldwide are now grappling with what to do when citizens who participated in violent extremist conflicts return home. Though the violent radicalization process is complex, it is inherently social in nature—and disengagement efforts will need to address those social factors too. Many returning persons will face prosecution, while others will reintegrate directly into local communities. But once the justice systems mete out their sentences, returnees need processes that enable them to abandon their violent attitudes and behaviors, and communities need approaches that can create social cohesion to avoid further violence, revenge, and future radicalization. To RSVP or to watch live, visit https://www.usip.org/events/disengaging-violent-extremism.  See https://www.facebook.com/events/2415599391996665/.
