58] – Dick Ochs sent out this message: Try to be at the World Trade Center (Pentagon tower at Harbor Place) on Fri., Jan. 17 at 8 AM.  Then for the lunch break at 11:45 AM.  Then at quitting time at 4 PM.  The Saudi ship is in Baltimore, and it will be loaded with weapons to kill Yemen children.  He will have signs and fliers.  The ship is at the Dundalk Marine Terminal, but there is no way to get near it. Email [mailto:rjochs@comcast.net].

59] – There is usually a silent peace and justice vigil on Fridays, from 5 to 6 PM, sponsored by Homewood Friends Meeting, outside the Homewood Friends Meetinghouse, 3107 N. Charles St.  The next scheduled vigil is on Jan. 17. Black Lives Matter.

60] – Join Youth Empower, the official youth arm of Women’s March, for pre-march fun and conversation on Fri., Jan. 17 from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at The Outrage, 1722 14th St. NW, WDC 20009. Come meet seasoned activists and ask them your burning questions about organizing in our Speed-Friending session, make new friends with youth activists from all over the country, make posters, talk your 2020 vision and more.  This event is the place to be for all youth ages 13-23 in town for the march. 61] – On Fri., Jan. 17 from 6 to 7:30 PM, XRDC is exhibiting Solidarity with Bushfire Rebellion at 1145 17th St. NW, WDC 20036-4707.  Join XRDC outside of the Australian Embassy to support our comrades in XR Australia and around the globe demanding action on the climate crisis.  Australia is on fire. Twelve million acres have burned or are currently engulfed in flames. The fires have killed more than one billion animals, destroying rich habitats as they sweep across vast swathes of the country. 27 people have died, among them brave firefighters who were trying to put out the inferno, and many more are missing.

Many of the firefighters battling the inferno are volunteers. They have been working round the clock for weeks. They are exhausted. So too are communities in Australia whose resilience is being tested as the flames destroy buildings and engulf the natural world around them.  These are the largest bushfires in recorded history in Australia. And they have been enabled by the hottest year in Australian history (2019) coupled with unprecedented droughts.

And yet the Australian government refuses to tackle the root cause of the bushfires. It is actively denying the linkage between the bushfires and global heating despite overwhelming scientific evidence. Instead, it is seeking to double coal exports to China and India and actively blocking international climate agreements. The Australian government has the blood of its people, its wildlife, and its future generations on its hands.  See https://www.facebook.com/events/3756827731001918/.

62] – On Fri., Jan. 17 from 6:30 to 9:30 PM, attend the Social Justice Film Series: and see “Sanctuary” & “Health Undocumented,” hosted by the Washington Ethical Society and the Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church, 9601 Cedar Lane,  Bethesda 20814. Come to a vegan/vegetarian potluck, watch film selections from the DC Immigration Film Festival, and talk back. Bring a dish to share or make a small donation as you're able.

Sanctuary (10 min) highlights reflections from a Unitarian Universalist congregation in the US providing physical sanctuary for a woman and her child escaping deportation. Vicky Chavez fled domestic abuse and violence in her native Honduras to seek asylum in the US. Nearly 4 years later, with her appeals exhausted and facing deportation, she asked a community of faith in Salt Lake City for sanctuary. Sheltered inside the church, she finds herself part of an ancient conflict.

Health Undocumented (Salud Sin Papeles) (85 min) shows a neo-Nazi rally and a stream of strict anti-immigrant laws passed in Arizona, which causes a group of activists to organize to build Phoenix Allies for Community Health, a unique free clinic serving undocumented immigrants. Health Undocumented captures the inspirational birth of a local grassroots movement. Juan Freitez is a Venezuelan filmmaker and video journalist debuting his first feature-length documentary.
