53] – Fund Our Communities, Bring the War Dollars Home, reported that Lockheed Martin, this powerful, multi-billion dollar company pulled out all the stops to prevent the passage of a resolution in the Montgomery County Council calling for cutbacks in military spending.  The Council was originally scheduled to vote on the resolution on Tues., Oct. 11, but the resolution has now been removed from the calendar and from the Council's Web site.

Fund Our Communities will hold a press conference and rally on the sidewalk in front of the Council building, 100 Maryland Ave., Rockville, on Tues., Oct. 11 at 9 AM--the Council meets at 9:30 AM.  After the rally, activists will attend the Council meeting and hold up signs saying "VOTE! For Peace" and "Peace Economy Now." Help expose the role of Lockheed Martin in defeating the voice of the people, in preventing us from even being able to express our opinion through our elected officials. Email jeanathey at verizon.net.

54] – On Tues., Oct. 11 at noon, there will be a press conference calling on the Super Committee to make cuts from the U.S. nuclear weapons budget over the next decade and hosted by Rep. Gard Jr. (USA, ret.), Chair of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, Joe Cirincione, president, Ploughshares Fund, and Ron Pollack, executive director, Families USA.  The U.S. government is the financial caretaker for 5,000 nuclear warheads, and the cost of maintaining this stockpile is an estimated $700 billion over the next ten years. Cut hundreds of billions from the U.S. nuclear weapons budget before targeting programs for seniors, families and the sick.  The press conference will be held in the House Triangle of the U.S. Capitol.

60] – On Tues., Oct 11 at 7 PM at the War Memorial Building, 101 N. Gay St., Baltimore, Maryland (across from City Hall), say NO to rate hikes by BG&E. BG&E officials have already announced that they intend to make customers pay for part of the $81 million spent to clean up after Hurricane Irene through rate increases. Much of the suffering that the people endured was a result of BGE's own greed -- for instance, cutting back work crews prior to the storm whose job it was to maintain power lines and trees.

BG&E announced this right after the U.S. Census Bureau proclaimed that 1 in 4 Baltimore residents is now living in poverty, a 20% increase in one year.  Join the All Peoples Congress in a campaign to STOP BG&E RATE HIKES!  Call 410-218-4835.
