25] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore will host an End the Wars vigil on Thurs., Aug. 4 from 5 to 6:30 PM in Mount Vernon at Centre & Charles Sts.  The Pledge gathers in Mount Vernon on the first Thursday of the month to protest U.S. wars.  Call Max at 410-366-1637

 

26] – Join the AFL-CIO, the Coalition of Concerned Citizens, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and others to stand in solidarity with seniors for their rights, and for dignity and respect from the local, state, and federal government. 27] – On Thurs., Aug. 4 at 7:30 PM, see the brilliant documentary BUDRUS at St. Francis of Assisi Parish Center, sponsored by the local Pax Christi chapter,  6701 Muncaster Mill Road, Derwood, Maryland 20855 . 28] – WPFW FM 89.3, the Pacifica Foundation's radio outlet for the national capital region, will feature a two-hour special broadcast to commemorate the atomic bombings of August 1945.  The program will begin at 10 AM and run until noon on Fri., Aug. 5.  In addition to broadcasting in stereo over 50,000 over-the-air Watts, WPFW can be heard via internet streaming at http://www.wpfw.org.

32] – A vigil for Justice in Palestine/Israel (now in its 8th year) takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM at 19th & JFK Blvd., Philadelphia (across from Israeli Consulate.  It is sponsored by Bubbies & Zaydes (Grandparents) for Peace in the Middle East. 33] – WIB holds a silent vigil mourning all violence, the first Friday of the month.  The next vigil is Aug. 5 from noon to 12:30 PM, War Memorial Park, intersection of W. 2nd & N. 34] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., Aug. 5 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings. 

 

35] – On Fri., Aug. 5 and Sat., Aug. 6, the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker and Jonah House communities invite you to join their annual Hiroshima-Nagasaki Faith and Resistance retreat.   The theme marking the 66th anniversary of the US atomic bombings in Japan is REMEMBER THE PAIN. REPENT THE SIN, RECLAIM THE FUTURE. They will meet at Stephen and the Incarnation Church, 1525 Newton St. NW, WDC 20010, and begin with dinner at 6 PM on Friday. Then there will be a showing of "The Forgotten Bomb" by Bud Ryan at 7 PM. 

 

During the retreat, enter together into a praxis of reflection, action, reflection. There will be presentations and updates on the US nuclear weapons complex as well as nonviolent actions at the Pentagon, White House and elsewhere to address the sin of the US nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On Saturday, the day begins at 9 AM at St. Stephen's to plan the day's events.  By 10 AM, there should be final planning for an action at the Udvar Hazy Museum where the Enola Gay is housed. 36] – On Fri., Aug. 5 at 7 PM watch the classic film HIROSHIMA, MON AMOUR ("Hiroshima, My Love"), which is being shown as part of the "JUST-REEL" First Friday Free Film Series at the Peace Center of Delaware County, 1001 Old Sproul Road, Springfield, Delaware County, PA. The evening will include light refreshments and an after-film discussion. It is co-sponsored by the Brandywine Peace Community. 37] – On Fri., Aug. 5 from 7 to 9 PM at Sankofa Video, Books & Café, 2714 Georgia Ave, NW, WDC, Ron Kipling Williams and Phenomena, two amazing talents from the local poetry/spoken word scene, not to mention two tireless activists, will perform.  Ron is a political spoken word artist, human rights activist and independent journalist. Phenomena was with the Dallas Chapter of the Black Panther Party, worked with various other civil rights groups, has given various speeches on Islam, political struggles, and been a spoken word artist for three years. 38] – Although the Hibakusha (living survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) will not be visiting the national capital area this summer, there will be a commemoration of the atomic bombings on Fri., Aug. 5 at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool at 7 PM, the exact moment being 7:15 PM EDT.  The Hiroshima/Nagasaki Peace Committee is collecting contributions to help Hibakusha living in Fukushima. Checks should be made out to the Washington Peace Center, 1525 Newton St. NW, WDC 20010 with a note for Fukushima relief. Proceeds will be sent to Nihon Hidankyo, the Japan Confederation of A & H Bomb Survivors Organizations.  Call John Steinbach at 703-822-3480.

 

39] – There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. 40] – Go to the West Baltimore Farmer's Market for fresh fruits, vegetables, breads and other treats every Saturday from 8 to noon.  CPHA has worked with the West Baltimore Marc TOD and Transit Inc. (WBMTTI) to establish a Farmer's Market at the West Baltimore Marc Train stop at Smallwood Road at Franklin and Mulberry Sts.  Since opening in June, over 300 people buy fresh groceries there every Saturday morning. WBMTTI will continue to include the community in the transit-oriented developments on the west side and continue to improve the area around "the highway to nowhere" until it becomes the highway to somewhere. Go to www.cphabaltimore.org.

43] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. Go to www.ccpeace.org. Email ccpeacemovement@aol.com.

 

44] – There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Aug, 6. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It.--Psalms 34:14." 45] – On Sat., Aug. 6 at noon, the Brandywine Peace Community will hold a Hiroshima Day demonstration & nonviolent resistance at Lockheed Martin in Valley Forge, PA (Mall & Goddard Blvds., behind the King of Prussia Mall).  Lockheed Martin, the world's largest war profiteer, is the U.S.'s chief nuclear weapons contractor. Call 610-544-1818 to participate in nonviolent action by facing arrest for resisting the injustice and criminality of Lockheed Martin.  There will be an on site preparation meeting at 11 AM for those planning to participate in the day's action. 46] – Take a CSA Farm Tour on Sat., Aug. 6 at noon.  You are invited whether or not you are a CSA member to go to Kimberton, PA. MEET THE FARMERS that grow the vegetables; the BAKERS that bake the Bread; the DAIRY TEAM and COWS that make the milk; connect with fellow CSA members and staff; and learn more about biodynamics.  It can be a day trip or overnight.  There is camping nearby, bed and breakfasts, or camp primitive style on the farm with us! 47] – Participate in Baltimore's Hiroshima commemoration on Sat., Aug. 6 at Homewood Friends Meetinghouse, 3107 N. Charles St., beginning at 4:30 PM with a Crabshell Alliance vigil to honor the victims of the nuclear energy disaster at Fukushima, Japan.  David Eberhardt will read poetry, and Janette D. Sherman M.D. [physician • author • activist] will address "Fukushima and the Nuclear Establishment." Paul Gunther from Beyond Nuclear will also speak.  At 6:30 PM, there will be a potluck dinner. 48] – The Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee invites you to two rallies.  Solitary confinement can be torture! 49] – On Sat., Aug. 6, get a ticket to the 7:05 PM Blue Jays v. Orioles game (Brian Matusz bobble head giveaway) for $13. This will benefit legal efforts aimed at helping the poor: University of Baltimore (Law) Students in Public Interest (UBSPI) and the (University of) Maryland Public Interest Law Program (MPILP).  Both provide select students with paid summer law clerkships at various local non-profit organizations - including the Office of the Public Defender.
