7] – Since nuclear weapons testing began on July 16, 1945, over 2,000 have taken place. In the early days of nuclear testing little consideration was given to its devastating effects on human life, let alone the dangers of nuclear fallout from atmospheric tests. Hindsight and history have shown us the terrifying and tragic effects of nuclear weapons testing, especially when controlled conditions go awry, and in light of the far more powerful and destructive nuclear weapons that exist today.  On December 2, 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared August 29 the International Day against Nuclear Tests by unanimously adopting resolution 64/35. The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.” The resolution was initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with a large number of sponsors and cosponsors with a view to commemorating the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site on 29 August 1991. The international instrument to put an end to all forms of nuclear testing is the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Unfortunately, this has yet to enter into force.

2010 marked the inaugural commemoration of the International Day against Nuclear Tests. In each subsequent year, the day has been observed by coordinating various activities throughout the world, such as symposia, conferences, exhibits, competitions, publications, lectures, media broadcasts and other initiatives. Moreover, “convinced that nuclear disarmament and the total elimination of nuclear weapons are the only absolute guarantee against the use or threat of nuclear weapons,” the General Assembly designated September 26 as the “International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons", which is devoted to furthering the objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons, through the mobilization of international efforts. The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons was observed for the first time in September 2014. The International Day against Nuclear Tests, together with other events and actions, has fostered a global environment that strongly advocates for a world free of nuclear weapons.

Push Sen. Manchin to have the moral courage to do what's right: To end the coward’s filibuster, pass all provisions of the For the People Act, fully restore the 1965 Voting Rights Act and pass $15/hr. federal minimum wage. https://actionnetwork.org/events/mass-moral-motorcade-on-manchin?link_id=&link_id=2&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-take-action-join-the-mass-moral-motorcade-on-manchin-in-west-virginia-this-thursday-6&email_referrer=email_1269126&email_subject=take-action-join-the-mass-moral-motorcade-on-manchin-in-west-virginia-this-thursday.

Women's Marchers across the nation have demanded it: Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. The U.S. House has already officially removed the time limit for passing the ERA — but the Senate *still* has yet to act. Join Women's March on the steps of the Supreme Court.  RSVP at https://womensmarch.com/form?akid=3511.508952.v1TYb5&rd=1&source=em20210819&t=2.

52] –Join activists around the country at a virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support of the For the People Act! The August deadline for 2022 is fast approaching! Our democracy is in crisis: with redistricting around the corner and hundreds of voter suppression laws being introduced in states across the country, we do not have time to wait. Every day we’re getting closer to a very real deadline to take action to pass the For the People Act (S.1): If the Senate does not overcome the filibuster and pass S. 1 by late August, states will not have enough time to implement the legislation’s regulations before the 2022 midterm elections! Join activists around the country at a virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support of S. 1! RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/pfaw/event/376178/?utm_source=PFAW to call on Thurs., Aug. 26 from 3 to 6 PM and 6 to 8 PM ET, Fri., Aug. 27 from 4 to 6 PM ET and Sat., Aug. 28 from noon to 2 PM ET and 4 to 6 PM and 6 to 8 PM ET or Sun., Aug. 29 noon to 2 PM ET and from 6 to 8 PM ET.

54] – The ANSWER Coalition DC [dc@answercoalition.org] urges you to support Pedro Castillo on Thurs., Aug. 26 at 5 PM ET at the Organization of American States, 200 17th St. NW, WDC.  Soon after being sworn in as president of Peru, Pedro Castillo's government is being stonewalled by right-wing forces in the country, preventing Castillo's cabinet from being formed. Show support for Castillo and the will of the Peruvian people.

55] – The U.S. and China – Past, Present and Future: Conflict and Cooperation in U.S.-China Relations will be discussed on Thurs., Aug. 26 from 7 to 8:30 PM EDT, hosted by Massachusetts Peace Action. It will feature Mark Selden and Zhiqun Zhu. Register at https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZModOmorz4rHtwRKZ9w0MwVaDenIP6Hy8GI. See an article “Paradoxes in the Taiwan Strait” that Professor Zhu published in Modern Diplomacy. You’ll find it at https://moderndiplomacy.eu/2021/08/23/paradoxes-in-the-taiwan-strait/.  The NPR broadcast about the fall of Kabul, and the end of a disastrous war that should never have been fought, made the point that President Biden is focusing on other foreign and military policy priorities. Between the lines, we could hear “military and other containment of China” – a potentially even greater error. As part of MPA’s effort to build an informed popular movement to impact U.S. China/Indo-Pacific policies, participate in this webinar. The prophetic historian Howard Zinn taught that if we don’t know our history, we can’t be free. Without that knowledge, he warned, whenever a president comes on TV and says that we are in danger from here or there, we lack the framework needed to critically judge its truth. Today the near unanimous Washington and media consensus is that China is a threat to democracy and freedom around the world, and that we must defend them by challenging and containing China militarily, economically, technologically, diplomatically, and politically. Provocative military operations near Taiwan or in the South China Sea carry the danger of an accident or miscalculation escalating to war, even, though, highly unlikely, a nuclear war.

56] – On Thurs., Aug. 26 at 8:30 PM ET, you are invited to virtually meet an inspiring candidate for Congress, Mckayla Wilkes, progressive challenger to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.  Please join RootsAction to meet a candidate in Maryland's 5th Congressional District. National Nurses United suspects you can be a part of replacing our current broken system with a single-payer system that guarantees health care to all free at the point of service.

58] – On Thurs., Aug. 26 and Tues., Aug. 31 from 5:30 to 8:30 PM ET, RepresentUs members across the country are joining the National For the People Act Phonebank and calling RepresentUs members in key states and asking them to make a quick call to their senator. The phonebank will start with a training hosted virtually on Zoom.
