5] – The workers at the Enoch Pratt Free Library have started a drive to organize a union calling themselves Pratt Workers United.  Go to https://www.prattworkersunited.org/. There is a letter of support for community members to sign at https://www.prattworkersunited.org/community-letter-support.

"Pratt Library workers are forming a union, Pratt Workers United. We are seeking pay equity for all, safer working conditions, benefits for part-time workers, and a voice in decisions that affect our work.” The workers voted to unionize

6] – Consider getting HOSPITALITY, the newsletter of OPEN DOOR: A prophetic discipleship community honoring the Black Jesus, Dorothy Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. The September/October 2022 issue contains a wonderful review by Claire Schaeffer-Duffy of Surely Goodness and Mercy by Murphy Davis, reprinted from The Catholic Worker, March-April 2022.  Davis, a co-founder of the Open Door Community, died in 2020.   You can subscribe to the newsletter or buy a copy of the book by calling 404-290-2047 or by emailing opendoorcomm@bellsouth.net.

7] – Another book to consider purchasing is Male Supremacy in the Catholic Church: An Insider’s View by Roy Bourgeois. His new book is both memoir and position-paper, and it makes the case that the Roman Catholic Church is a corrupt system that spits out truth-tellers. The crime he was excommunicated for was attending the ordination ceremony of Janice Sevre-Duszynska in Lexington, Kentucky, in August 2008. The ordination was under the auspices of the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests.  The Vatican’s response has been to excommunicate any woman who has the audacity to see herself as a priest equal to a male priest. You can purchase a copy from Amazon or by Kindle.

Here are two quotes to contemplate: “I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men. She is to keep silent.” – Timothy 1, 2:12-13.  “If the patriarchy that dominates the church is not dismantled and women are not treated as equals, the church will continue to diminish and, eventually, die.” – Roy Bourgeois.

8] – Jerry Windley-Daoust is looking for an individual or community that might be in a position to sponsor a Ukrainian refugee family under the Uniting for Ukraine program. The head of this family, Dymtro, needs a sponsor. He is 33 and a male fashion model living in Kyiv. He speaks and writes English very well. His 54-year-old mother and his 19-year-old brother, Artem, live in a nearby city. His brother has autism, is nonverbal, and had been receiving care from a local institution until the onset of the war; in recent months, he has not received adequate care due to medical facilities prioritizing war-related physical and mental health issues. Dmytro’s mother is a professional baker who has been out of work and suffers from depression, likely due to the stress of the war and care for her 19-year-old son.

Dmytro is the sole breadwinner and supporter of his mother and brother. He is keen to leave Ukraine to avoid military conscription, since that would leave his mother and brother in a more vulnerable position. He is legally able to leave the country due to his circumstances. The family would probably best be placed in a major urban center with an existing Ukrainian population, but at this point, they just want to get out of the country and will accept placement anywhere.

The main responsibilities of the sponsor would be to provide the family with temporary shelter and assistance getting Artem connected to the health care system. You can learn more about U4U sponsorship at the USCIS web page. If you or your community are interested in possibly sponsoring this family, please reach out to me at wind@gracewatch.org or jerry@catholicworker.org.

9] – Pax Christi Metro DC-Baltimore <info@paxchristimdcb.org> is doing a Zoom presentation on Sat., Aug. 5 from 11 AM to noon ET on the Human Rights Situation in the Philippines. Vivian Ourand is with the Malaya Movement Baltimore. Malaya (which is the Tagalog word for "free") is a US-based anti-fascist, anti-dictatorship movement that aims to advance democracy and human rights in the Philippines. Vivian will lead the discussion. Click on this link https://us06web.zoom.us/j/85648173146?pwd=dWRsM3JtU1hBemtNeWxIUzNBeFlUZz09#success.  If you prefer to participate by phone, the call-in number is 301-715-8592, the meeting ID is 856 4817 3146, and the passcode is 266241.

10] – There is a Vote NO Campaign virtual phone bank and training, hosted by Ohio Democratic Party. Join other pro-democracy callers on phone banks run by the Ohio Democratic Party to help ensure that the 60% threshold to pass a citizen-led constitutional amendment never, ever becomes Ohio law. After you attend a training and the phone bank afterwards, you'll be equipped to make calls anytime that works for your schedule in the future.  The phone bank times are as follows on Sun., Aug. 6 from 10 AM to noon, 1 to 3 PM & 5 to 7 PM, Mon., Aug. 7 from 10 AM to noon, 1 to 3 PM & 5 to 7 PM and on Tues., Aug. 8 from 9 to 11 AM, noon to 2 PM, 4 to 5 PM & 5 to 7 PM ET. AFM will bring pop up tents, ice water, folding chairs, some signs and fliers to hand out.  RSVP to Phil Caroom <pcaroom@gmail.com>.

By Metro, take Yellow Line and get out at the "Pentagon" stop. Do not go to the Pentagon City stop! Go up south escalators and turn left and walk across to protest area. By car from D.C. area, take 395 South and get off at Exit 8A-Pentagon South Parking. Take slight right onto S. Rotary Rd. at end of ramp and right on S. 44] – Jane Fonda for Fire Drill Fridays [info@greenpeaceusa.org] is concerned about the future of our climate.  Does it lie with California? Did you know California has a law banning the sale of new gas-powered cars after 2035? Now, more than 17 other states are considering similar moves. And this is just one example of environmental and social policies that have started in California and spread beyond. So how did the Golden State become a trendsetter for the rest of the nation? On Fri., Aug. 4 at 2 PM ET, ‌‌ join me for a lively and enlightening conversation with Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of Southern California, Manuel Pastor, Ph.D., and Co-Director of the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN), Christine Cordero, on why the future of our climate — and politics — may lie with California.  RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/firedrillfridays/event/571295/?utm_source=fdfemail&sourceid=&emci=47c26601-a030-ee11-b8f0-00224832eb73&emdi=4cc26601-a030-ee11-b8f0-00224832eb73&ceid=1705696.

45] – On Fri., Aug. 4 & Wed., Aug. 6 from 4 to 6 PM ET, there is a Common Cause organized Election Protection phone bank.   Work together to demand bold changes to our democracy to create a government that represents all of us, not big corporations or special interests. Register for a shift to make calls and help strengthen the phone bank team to protect our democracy. These shifts will also always include training for first-timers before you make calls, so if this is your first time, no worries! Register at https://www.mobilize.us/dfadcoalition/event/376178/?followup_modal_context=organization_newsletter_custom_recommendations.

46] – There is a Vote NO Campaign virtual phone bank and training, hosted by Ohio Democratic Party. Join other pro-democracy callers on phone banks run by the Ohio Democratic Party to help ensure that the 60% threshold to pass a citizen-led constitutional amendment never, ever becomes Ohio law. Call as many voters throughout Ohio as humanly possible to turn them out to vote. At the outset of a phone bank, you will be trained on how to make phone calls using a dialer! After you attend a training and the phone bank afterwards, you'll be equipped to make calls anytime that works for your schedule in the future.  The phone bank times are as follows on Sat., Aug. 5 from 10 AM to noon ET, from 1 to 3 PM, and from 5 to 7 PM ET. Sign up at https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/563286/?followup_modal_context=nonexclusive_newsletter_most_popular_virtual.

47] –World BEYOND War [gabriel@worldbeyondwar.org] is holding a webinar Peru: facing the failure of democracy on Sat., Aug. 5 at 11 AM. Why are U.S. troops in Peru?  Last month, the U.S. military deployed 1,200 troops with weapons of war to Peru to participate in joint military exercises with the Peruvian armed forces. Understand the context of the current situation in Peru and the U.S. military's role in the country.  Learn more about the recent mobilizations in Peru, in which protesters have been demanding the restoration of democracy in the country, the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Peruvian territory, and respect for human rights of the entire population, including those in rural areas and indigenous peoples. RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/webinar-peru-facing-the-failure-of-democracy?link_id=3&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-te-invitamos-al-webinar-peru-frente-al-fracaso-de-la-democracia-2&email_referrer=email_1995790&email_subject=why-are-us-troops-in-peru-august-5-webinar.  I have no idea who named this webinar.  But I would argue that there is no failure of democracy. But the blame is on certain forces who overthrew democracy.  There was a coup against the democratically elected president of Niger.  It was not democracy that failed, but it was the coup-plotters avarice that overthrew democracy.

51] – The Healthcare Justice Campaign celebrated Medicare’s and Medicaid’s Birthday! These indispensable public programs have been effectively delivering health coverage to tens of millions of Americans for fifty eight years! We must protect and rescue them from greedy private health insurers and their allies in Congress who are allowing traditional Medicare funds to be drained at our expense–all to increase the soaring profits of insurance companies. 41] – Ken Jones [info@email.actionnetwork.org] wants you to attend a War Industry Resistance Network webinar on Thurs., Aug. 3 at 8 PM ET -- The US State Department as a Tool of Empire. Hear from Ann Wright and Matthew Hoh.  Register here: https://masspeaceaction.org/event/the-us-state-department-as-a-tool-of-empire-a-war-industry-resisters-network-webinar/.

The official mission of the US State Department is: “To protect and promote U.S. security, prosperity, and democratic values and shape an international environment in which all Americans can thrive.” No word about diplomacy, but rather a tone of chauvinistic militancy. How does the State Department accompany the war industry in the US drive for global dominance? This webinar will address how an agency tasked with fostering diplomatic relations has become an aggressive force for maintaining a unipolar world, promoting fear and hatred towards Russia, China, and other countries that do not comply with the so-called “rules-based order” imposed by the US.

28] – American Muslims for Palestine & Americans for Justice in Palestine [info@ampalestine.org] are hosting on Wed., Aug. 2 at 3 PM ET a WEBINAR on the VISA WAIVER PROGRAM.  This is Legitimizing Apartheid: Why Israel is Not Eligible for the Visa Waiver Program.  The U.S. and Israel signed a MOU to facilitate Israel’s entry into the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Upon signing the MOU, a 30-45 day trial period began to test Israel's eligibility to enter the program. If Israel fulfills the statutory requirement to extend “reciprocal privileges to [US] citizens and nationals,” it will be admitted into the VWP program. Israelis would then be eligible to enter the U.S. visa-free for 90 days.  Israel is NOT eligible for the VWP and should NOT be admitted due to its decades-long systematic discriminatory entry policies targeting Palestinian- and Arab-Americans, Muslims, and Americans who support and advocate for Palestinian rights.  RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/events/1355278561688605/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%2252%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22[%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22extra_data%5C%22%3A%7B%5C%22invite_link_id%5C%22%3A1929962924037658%7D%7D]%22%7D.

33] –.MAPA [info@masspeaceaction.org] wants you to attend  a webinar Nuclear War, Environmental Disaster, and Raytheon in Ukraine Webinar on Wed., Aug. 2 at 8 PM ET. Join a discussion led by MAPA activists Richard Krushnic and Patrick Moran. Are there twin threats of our time, global warming and nuclear war? The frightening effects of climate change are happening faster than anticipated. This seems to be hyperbole: “the greatest environmental threat we face at this time is from limited or total nuclear war. A limited nuclear war with tactical nuclear weapons would be the gravest of all environmental catastrophes, primarily caused by the nuclear winter it would spawn. And an all-out nuclear war would mean extinction for humans, most animals and much of the environment.”

A nuclear exchange cannot happen between Russia and Ukraine.  If Russia were to use nukes, the result would be omnicide.  Any nuke used against Ukraine would affect Belarus, Poland, Russia, Moldova and of course Ukraine.  A better approach would be to pressure Putin to end his illegal and brutal invasion. After that rebuilding Ukraine will be the order of the day. RSVP at https://secure.everyaction.com/JGZ5an5eBkeH8BN6ltEcbQ2?emci=ad8be196-be2f-ee11-b8f0-00224832eb73&emdi=528d84e0-ce2f-ee11-b8f0-00224832eb73&ceid=320042.
