The goal is to reach more than 500,000 voters Sign up to write letters to Get out the Vote at https://votefwd.org/pfaw.

Virginia is a crucial bellwether state vital to America’s political landscape, and its state elections this year will have a serious impact on the 2022 national midterms. People For is gearing up to be very active in this year’s state-level campaign, and it seeks national support to make sure that the progressive gains from 2020 continue in the former seat of the Confederacy this year.  People For is thrilled to announce that we are once again partnering with Vote Forward, an exciting campaign to increase voter participation through letter-writing to key voters in battleground states and districts. Vote Forward’s letter-writing project is incredibly simple, as all you need are stamps, stationery, and a pen!

8] – Usually, the Baltimore Ethical Society, 2521 St. Paul St., Baltimore 21218, meets on Sundays, and generally there is a speaker and discussion at 10:30 AM.  On Sun., Sept. 5, the subject is “Reflections on Graduation.” We have recently passed the season of graduation, where students meet a so-called ‘end of the road’ for high school and/or college; the dead end is always met with the question, what is next? What happens after it’s all said and done? For many of us in life, we never see another graduation or degree(s), and we find ourselves asking yet again what’s next?  Join Jé Exodus Hooper and discuss life’s graduation and a path that leads into a site of memory.

Hooper (they/them) teaches Theatre History, holds a Ph.D. from the School of Interdisciplinary Arts, and is Ethical Humanist clergy. Both as a performer and clergy within the Ethical Culture Movement and First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, their ritual-based performance is grounded in the act of homiletics, decolonial Humanism and Black Intellectual Thought. Jé’s love for orality involves the aesthetic of Black folk-talk – one of imagination as meaning-making. Their word-working emphasizes human freedom and interconnectedness through embodiment, intuition, creativity, and improvisation. These kinds of transdisciplinary approaches console and agitate communities in re-imagining and re-claiming narratives that honor the inherited worth and dignity within all people!  The Zoom link and more info can be obtained at PRESIDENT@BMORETHICAL.ORG.

Peace Group Will Protest War Profiteer Northrop Grumman

BALTIMORE PEACE ACTION, 431 Notre Dame Lane, Apt. 206., Baltimore, MD 21212

PRESS RELEASE-FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 2, 2021

CONTACT: Max Obuszewski 443-761-5899 or mobuszewski2001 at Comcast dot net

Richard Ochs 443-846-6638 or rjochs at Comcast dot net

Peace Group Will Protest War Profiteer Northrop Grumman

WHO:   Peace Action is the nation’s largest grassroots peace network with chapters and affiliates in states across the country. It organizes its network to place pressure on Congress and the administration through write-in campaigns, internet actions, grassroots lobbying and direct action. Maryland Peace Action is part of that network, and Baltimore Peace Action is a chapter of the State organization.

Baltimore Peace Action holds these beliefs. War is not a suitable response to conflict.  Every person has the right to live without the threat from nuclear weapons. The United States government must change its priorities which favor the elite, and provide sufficient resources to end the extreme income inequality prevalent in our society. Most recently, Maryland Peace Action was part of a coalition to commemorate the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

WHAT: Members of Baltimore Peace Action protested the Bush/Cheney invasion of Afghanistan, and predicted that the only victors of this imperial misadventure would be weapons contractors.  Pulling U.S. troops out of Afghanistan was the right decision. However, the weapons contractors still determine U.S. foreign policy. This is undemocratic, and must be challenged.

It was decided to write a letter to CEO Jackie Warden of Northrop Grumman requesting a meeting.  The group intends to deliver the letter to a Northrop Grumman facility.

WHEN: Friday, September 3, 2021 at 4:30 PM

WHERE: Northrop Grumman, 1580 W. Nursery Road A, Linthicum Heights, MD 21090

WHY: We are pleased that President Biden withdrew U.S. troops from Afghanistan, but his administration requested a military budget larger than Trump’s.  Unless this changes, there will be a continual search for enemies and other countries invaded.

The U.S.-sponsored carnage, death and destruction in Afghanistan cannot be forgotten: “Over 775,000 US troops have fought in Afghanistan since 2001. Of those, 2,448 were killed, along with almost 4,000 US contractors. Approximately 20,589 were wounded in action according to the Defense [sic] Department. Afghan casualty figures are difficult to calculate, since ‘enemy deaths’ that include civilians are not counted. Carl Conetta of the Project on Defense Alternatives estimated that at least 4,200–4,500 civilians were killed by mid-January 2002 as a consequence of the US assault, both directly as casualties of the aerial bombing campaign and indirectly in the humanitarian crisis that ensued. By 2021, the Associated Press were reporting that 47,245 civilians had perished because of the occupation. Afghan civil rights activists gave a higher total, insisting that 100,000 Afghans (many of them non-combatants) had died, and three times that number had been wounded.” [Tariq Ali, August 16, 2021]

The debacle in Afghanistan occurred because weapons contractors are the tail that wags the dog.  Northrop Grumman plays a deadly game.  It uses campaign contributions to buy legislators, its  lobbyists make sure that the taxpayer trough is wide open for weapons contracts and finally the corporation uses the revolving door between Congress, the Pentagon and Northrop Grumman to promote war.  It is necessary that weapons contractors are made aware of our concerns about democracy and the misuse of tax dollars going towards weapons of war rather than human needs.

67] – Bad Attitude Publishers Announces the release of Beauty Fades /Stupid Lasts Forever and The Trial According to Alan Barysh. In the follow-up book to Sorry Truther, it was an OUTSIDE JOB Beauty Fades.... gives the reader an upfront look at the reactionary forces and the deadly beliefs these folks uphold. In pictures and texts, one gets a good look at the faces and ideas that pose a real threat to this country. The Trial According to Alan Barysh is a rewrite of the Kafka Classic The Trial. With pictures from the original movie, Alan Barysh rewrites this scathing satire with just a tad more cutting edge satire, and a different ending. The appendix to the book talks about the lonely uphill struggle of Tawanda Jones to get justice for her brother. This afterthought is included, because of the real Kafkesque struggle of the West Family to get justice for her brother. Both books can be purchased on Amazon.com. For every purchase of The Trial, Alan Barysh will give all of his royalties to the West Family. Just text a picture of the book to 443-239-5325.

“One is called to live nonviolently, even if the change one works for seems impossible. It may or may not be possible to turn the US around through nonviolent revolution. But one thing favors such an attempt: the total inability of violence to change anything for the better" - Daniel Berrigan

45] – Join activists around the country at a virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support of the For the People Act! The August deadline for 2022 is fast approaching! Our democracy is in crisis: with redistricting around the corner and hundreds of voter suppression laws being introduced in states across the country, we do not have time to wait. Every day we’re getting closer to a very real deadline to take action to pass the For the People Act (S.1): If the Senate does not overcome the filibuster and pass S. 1 by late August, states will not have enough time to implement the legislation’s regulations before the 2022 midterm elections! Join activists around the country at a virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support of S. 1! RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/pfaw/event/376178/?utm_source=PFAW to call on Thurs., Sept. 2 from 3 to 6 PM and 6 to 8 PM ET or Sat., Sept. 4 from 4 to 6 PM and 6 to 8 PM ET.

46] – Shelly, Super Volunteer for Women's March [info@womensmarch.com] is inviting you to get involved on Thurs., Sept. 2 from 5 to 6 PM ET.  ‌ ‌Volunteers reached out to voters in 2020. Now there is work to be done to address the rising wave of white nationalism in our country. Help with the United Vision Project to reach out to folks who may be sympathetic to extreme nationalist movements and have deep conversations to better understand their points of view. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/womensmarch/event/398997/?akid=3537.508952.F3aqd1&rd=1&t=2&utm_campaign=em20210901.

51] – Rising Tide North America [info@email.actionnetwork.org] is urging you to get on the call on Thurs., Sept. 2 at 8 PM ET.  Folks are getting creative on the frontlines of the protest against Line 3, and throwing down to make sure that the pipeline is stopped. This resistance is incredibly inspiring. Last week, thousands gathered at the Minnesota State Capitol calling on Minnesota governor Tim Walz to Stop Line 3. Soon after, hundreds blockaded Walz’s mansion demanding he stop the pipeline. Cops came in riot gear, assaulting peaceful water protectors, hitting one on the head with a baton, and 69 were arrested. Medicare for All was reintroduced in the House as H.R. 1976. The bill was introduced with a record 112 original cosponsors. And, because of collective organizing, the total is now 118 cosponsors. The plan was to focus efforts on 19 Democrats who it is believed were most likely to sign on to the bill with enough pressure, along with 21 Democrats who are some of the highest recipients of corporate health care donations in Congress.  Two members of Congress on the priority list have since signed on -- Rep. Kweisi Mfume (MD-07) and Rep. Zoe Lofgren (CA-19). Activists in the districts of Rep. Betty McCollum (MN-04) and Rep. Mike Quigley (IL-05) have also succeeded in moving their members of Congress to cosponsor during this same time.
