Friends,
Armstrong Williams is the co-owner of The Baltimore Sun and a close friend of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Williams pens at least two columns a week. I never look forward to reading them as, for example, one promoted Trump as a Nobel Peace Prize hopeful. Another was entitled “Hamas gains from Gaza’s suffering.” Of course, it blames the suffering on the Palestinian group and ignores Israeli war crimes.
Letters to the Editor
THE SUN
I was stunned first to see a photograph of Armstrong Williams at the United Arab Emirates embassy and then to read his op-ed “UAE National Day in Washington highlights economic future in the US” [The Baltimore Sun, December 4, 2025]. The op-ed extols the potential economic relationship between the UAE and the USA. This quotation from Rep. Tom Wilson was most noxious: “We have a chance, because of Donald Trump, for peace for the first time in 3,000 years in the Middle East.” It has to go down with one of the most preposterous statements I have ever read. This is a president that supports the execution of alleged drug couriers and denies them the right to contest the charges in court.
I remember another op-ed by Mr. Williams “Racism endures; ignoring genocide in Africa” on June 5, 2024. This is what he wrote: “Ongoing genocides in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, Sudan, the Central African Republic, and Biafra are largely ignored.” I appreciated that he highlighted the ongoing violence in the aforementioned countries, but surely, the co-owner of The Sun is aware of the UAE funding of the notorious Rapid Support Forces in Sudan? Journalists and humanitarian groups have long been documenting the support of weapons, supplies, and political cover provided by the UAE to the RSF. The RSF is carrying out mass atrocities and is working closely with Russia Wagner group. The situation in parts of Sudan, including in El Fasher, have resulted in one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises in the world.
