As President, he pardoned all Vietnam draft evaders on his second day in office. He successfully negotiated the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, and the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. He established the Departments of Energy and Education. As a symbol of his intent to pursue sustainable energy policy, he had solar panels installed on the White House roof (removed by Big Oil booster Ronald Reagan). Mr. Carter infused foreign policy with concern for human rights and talked openly about his deep Christian faith.
After his presidency, Jimmy Carter really hit his stride, forming the Carter Center and becoming a key figure in Habitat for Humanity. He won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.
