They are trying to grow a Catholic Worker House in Irvington (West Baltimore). In a nutshell, there is a lot that a volunteer could do in that neighborhood/Baltimore, in addition to prayer and daily community living and in addition to plugging into all the good work that people are already doing in and around Baltimore (and beyond).  If you think you might know of anyone who might be interested in starting a conversation with them about becoming such a volunteer/community member, please contact Jeff/Suzanne at 443-690-6872.

6] – Is there a woman in the Baltimore area who does house cleaning?  This assignment would be on an irregular basis with several hours per week.  Contact Max at 410-323-1607 or mobuszewski2001 at Comcast dot net.

7] – Ben Betz, People For the American Way [alerts@pfaw.org] is asking you to Help Get Out The Vote in Virginia by signing up to write letters to voters in Virginia through September 18! The goal is to reach more than 500,000 voters Sign up to write letters to Get out the Vote at https://votefwd.org/pfaw.

Virginia is a crucial bellwether state vital to America’s political landscape, and its state elections this year will have a serious impact on the 2022 national midterms. People For is gearing up to be very active in this year’s state-level campaign, and it seeks national support to make sure that the progressive gains from 2020 continue in the former seat of the Confederacy this year.  People For is thrilled to announce that we are once again partnering with Vote Forward, an exciting campaign to increase voter participation through letter-writing to key voters in battleground states and districts. Vote Forward’s letter-writing project is incredibly simple, as all you need are stamps, stationery, and a pen!

10] – The National Immigration Law Center [info@nilc.org] is inviting you on Tues., Aug. 17 at 3 PM ET for a webinar: "Building a Successful & Inclusive EITC Program." This event is part of the monthly Winning in the States webinar series. Each month delve into priority state-level policy challenges and strategies with leaders in the field. The federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program is a critical tool with strong bipartisan support and a long track record of lifting families out of poverty. Recognizing the effectiveness of the federal EITC, 28 states and the District of Columbia have adopted state-level EITC programs to bolster this support. And Missouri and Washington have both passed legislation that will enact state EITC in 2023.

Unfortunately, both the federal EITC and most state-level EITCs exclude millions of immigrant workers and taxpayers in mixed-status immigrant families because they unfairly require that every person in the household, including all children, have a Social Security Number (SSN). This SSN requirement leaves out millions in families that include members with Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs). Charles St., Baltimore, Maryland 21218.  You can also reach his office by Phone: (410) 516-8068, Fax: (410) 516-6097 or email: president@jhu.edu.

12] –Join activists around the country at a virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support of the For the People Act! The August deadline for 2022 is fast approaching! Our democracy is in crisis: with redistricting around the corner and hundreds of voter suppression laws being introduced in states across the country, we do not have time to wait. Every day we’re getting closer to a very real deadline to take action to pass the For the People Act (S.1): If the Senate does not overcome the filibuster and pass S. 1 by late August, states will not have enough time to implement the legislation’s regulations before the 2022 midterm elections! Join activists around the country at a virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support of S. 1! RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/pfaw/event/376178/?utm_source=PFAW to call on Tues, Aug. 17 from 5:30 to 8 PM ET, Wed., Aug. 18 from 4 to 6 PM ET, Thurs., Aug. 19 from 3 to 6 PM and 6 to 8 PM ET, Fri.., Aug. 20 from 4 to 6 PM ET, Sat., Aug. 21 from noon to 2 PM ET or Sun., Aug. 22 from 6 to 8 PM ET.

13] – People's Action [info@peoplesaction.org] points out that the USA is “dead last” in health care. Phone bank on Tuesdays, August 17, 24, and 31 from 6:30 to 9 PM ET. The phone banking is to call for an expansion of Medicare. Sign up at https://www.mobilize.us/peoplesaction/event/404197/?link_id=1&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-join-us-tonight-to-phone-bank-to-expand-medicare-2&email_referrer=email_1256841&email_subject=dead-last-in-health-care.  Because of the greed of health insurance corporations and Big Pharma, we rank last in access to care, equity, health outcomes, and administrative efficiency.  Reconciliation is a special Senate procedure that requires only 51 votes for passage instead of the usual 60. Grow Medicare to include dental, vision, and hearing coverage; lower the eligibility age and out-of-pocket costs; and give Medicare the power to negotiate drug prices.

14] –The Anne Arundel Fair Elections Taskforce will meet on Tues., Aug. 17 at 6:30 PM ET.  Register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0pduyqrT4sHdJGFOPv6Ol4VZWdR3iO64q8?emci=ca496eb4-4af9-eb11-b563-501ac57b8fa7&emdi=63bdde80-4ef9-eb11-b563-501ac57b8fa7&ceid=136680.

15] – The US Should Pursue Cooperation with China: Jeff Sachs on Tues., Aug. 17 from 7 to 8 PM EDT as an online event. “Cooperation is not cowardice, as American conservatives repeatedly claim,” wrote Jeff Sachs in a February 2021 article.  “Both the US and China have much to gain from it: peace, expanded markets, accelerated technological progress, the avoidance of a new arms race, progress against COVID-19, a robust global jobs recovery, and a shared effort against climate change.” In other recent articles, Sachs argued that the Xinjiang genocide allegations are unjustified and that the recent US/China agreement to cooperate on climate change is an important and welcome development. Jeffrey Sachs is University Professor and director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University.  He is one of the world’s leading experts on sustainable development, economic development, and the fight against poverty.   He chairs The Lancet’s COVID-19 commission.  Register at bit.ly/sachs-china.

16] – This summer and fall, there are opportunities for grassroots engagement on new district maps across the country, so All On the Line is hosting Redistricting Summer Sessions to ensure grassroots activists and volunteers have the tools they need to make their voices heard through the final stretch of the 2021 redistricting cycle.  Grassroots Engagement Opportunities + Tactics will cover many of the ways grassroots activists can engage in their state’s redistricting process and how to prepare to participate.   The sessions available are on Tues., Aug. 17 from 7:30 to 8:30 PM ET and Sat., Aug. 21 from 3 to 4 PM ET. REGISTER at https://www.mobilize.us/allontheline/event/398976/?utm_campaign=20210717_AOTL_O_resend_RUcalendar_ActivesXopeners&emci=5211a10c-5fe6-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&emdi=be8d0a56-ebe6-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&ceid=4818037.

17] – Steph Compton wants to see you on Tues., Aug. 17  at 7:30 PM ET as the Energy Justice Network will go live on the zero waste topic of deconstruction! Pre-register on zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAkdOmsqT4sGtGZasJ6ok12z3f_uL9LFW5Z. RSVP online and share with your friends on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/2332295276902606.

Our city has 15,000+ vacant buildings. While some should be reused and remodeled for affordable housing, demolishing the rest would lead to toxics in the surrounding environment. This is where deconstruction comes in - where a building is taken down piece-by-piece, minimizing environmental impacts and maximizing economic value of the recovered materials. This reduces waste drastically, keeping more materials from incinerators and landfills, and facilitates numerous economic opportunities! Come learn more about what deconstruction looks like in Portland, OR, and what a deconstruction ordinance could look like in Baltimore! Hear from Councilwoman Ramos (District 14), followed by a Q&A session - all in one hour!

To be continued.
