43] -- On Wed., Jan. 22 from 8:15 to 9:30 AM, come to Justice for Breakfast - Advocating for the Right to Counsel, hosted by the Public Justice Center at Brown, Goldstein & Levy, LLP, 120 E. Baltimore St., Suite 1700, Baltimore 21202. The movement to establish a right to counsel in civil cases has been growing in leaps and bounds for the past five years. Six cities have enacted legislation guaranteeing a right to counsel for low-income tenants. A dozen other cities and states are considering similar legislation. And presidential candidates are talking about such a right as part of their housing platforms. Join us for a discussion of the successes in eviction right to counsel and other areas that have seen a tremendous uptick of interest around the country, such as efforts to guarantee a right to counsel for vulnerable adults in guardianship proceedings and for low-income people facing incarceration in civil proceedings for inability to pay fees and fines or child support. We’ll also talk about the litigation and legislative efforts behind the right to counsel movement. Reservations requested: reynoldsr@publicjustice.org or (410) 400-6944.
