62] – On Thurs., Nov. 4 from 1:20 to 3:30 PM, Colman McCarthy has a class at Georgetown Univ. Law School, Room 140 –McDonough Building – 600 New Jersey Ave. NW, WDC.  Speakers are DC Superior Court Judge Frank Burgess and Eddie Ellis. In 1991, Judge Burgess presided over the trail of Eddie Ellis, then 17, and issued a sentence of 16 years which Eddie finished three years ago. He now works with ex-offenders. Neither Judge Burgess nor Eddie Ellis has met since the trial.

65] – The Program in Latin American Studies at Johns Hopkins University presents RAUL ZIBECHI, a native of Montevideo, Uruguay who became a militant of the Frente Estudiantil Revolucionario (FER) in the 70s, on Thurs., Nov. 4 at 6 PM at Gilman Hall 50. In the 80s he began his publishing career, writing articles for newspapers and magazines and focused his writing on social movements in Latin America and has collaborated on training and outreach work with movements including  urban movements in Argentina,  peasants movements in Paraguay and indigenous movements in Bolivia, Peru, Chile and Colombia. All his theoretical work, aimed at understanding and defending the organizational processes of these movements, is laid out in his book DISPERSING POWER (Dispersando el Poder) which has recently been published in English by AK Press. Vernon or Gallery Place Metro stations), the Africa Faith and Justice Network announces its second annual Fr. Bill Dyer Lecture. Nigerian Sister Eucharia Madueke, SND, will explore the cultural, religious and social understandings of the roles of men and women in West Africa and the African Diaspora in the United States. She will contrast equality with complimentarity, drawing implications related to work, pay, marriage, children, social standing, security, and more. The Dyer Lecture series is a new initiative of the Africa Faith and Justice Network. Fr. 73] – The FBI Raids: The Activist Community Responds is a series of workshops scheduled to take place on Sat., Nov. 6 starting at 1 PM at the Friends Meeting of Washington, 2111 Florida Ave. NW, WDC 20008.  The meetinghouse is just north of Dupont Circle, west of Connecticut Ave.  Civil liberties activists and experts will examine the FBI raids and other attacks on activists, your legal rights, and how our community can respond.

 

On Sept. 24, 2010, the FBI raided anti-war and solidarity activists in Chicago (two homes) and Minneapolis (five homes and the office of the Anti-War Committee). During the raids, the FBI took computers, cell phones, documents and personal family items. In total, 14 activists in Minnesota, Illinois, and Michigan were subpoenaed to appear before a Grand Jury. They have subsequently refused to appear.  

 

The first workshop is from 1 to 2:15 PM: What’s Going On and What Are the Legal Rules in Place?  The second workshop from 2:15 to 3 PM is entitled What Are Our Rights?  The last workshop from 3:10 to 4 PM is How Should the Movement Respond?  The event is brought to you by National Lawyer's Guild, American Civil Liberties Union, Bill of Rights Defense Committee, Washington Peace Center and Defending Dissent.  Go to http://www.stopfbi.net/trackback/202.

 

74] – The 13th Annual Human Rights Potluck Dinner & Program is happening on Sat., Nov. 6 from 6:30 to 9 PM at the Florence Bain Senior Center, 5470 Ruth Keaton Way, Columbia, MD 21044.  The event will honor Rev. Lucius Walker and address U.S. Immigration Policy and the Migrant Experience. Bring a dish to share and participate in the silent auction.

 

The speakers are Martin Davidoff, a retired professor and active member of HoCoFoLA, who spent seven days in 2008 crossing the desert just south of Tucson, Arizona with more than 50 human rights workers.  The seventy-five mile trek took them through a region where, over the last decade, thousands of migrants have died trying to reach the U.S.     

 

Catalina Nieto migrated to the United States from Bogota, Colombia in 2000 and has since dedicated her life to working for social justice.  Catalina is currently the National Grassroots Organizer for Witness for Peace and works for just and fair U.S. policies toward Latin America via campaigns to foster education, grassroots advocacy and media exposure on issues of trade, migration and military aid.   

 

Elizabeth Alex currently serves as CASA de Maryland's Lead Organizer for the Central Maryland region, including Baltimore City, Baltimore, Anne Arundel, and Howard Counties.  She has over ten years of community organizing experience in the US and abroad.

76] – There is a project to assist young refugees from Haiti, now residing in the Dominican Republic.  The founder of the project needs funding to providing education to the youth as a way out of desperate poverty.  Try to imagine the poverty in Haiti, and then realize that these young refugees are considered low caste in the Dominican Republic.
