On Wednesdays, including Aug. 21, from 6 to 7 PM ET, join a Team ENOUGH welcome session to learn more about the different ways you can engage.  Team ENOUGH is a youth-led program whose mission is to educate young voices about gun violence and mobilize them to take meaningful action against it. Supported by Brady United, it harnesses the expertise and experience of today’s youth to advance intersectional work across the country. The following session takes place on Aug. 21, and the series will continue through Dec. 18. 43] – Metro DC DSA [info@mdcdsa.org] on Wed., Aug. 21 at 6:30 PM ET is indicating that Tenants will continue the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act petition canvassing. The landlord lobby is aggressively attacking District residents’ rights as renters, so tenants are preparing to not just counter this effort, but pursue an expansion of tenants' rights in the city. Canvassing serves to inform DC renters of this attack and encourage them to take action. Meet at the Woodley Apartments, 2800 Woodley Road NW, WDC 20008, and take a short training before the canvass and then new canvassers will be paired with experienced door knockers. RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/sos-topa-petition-canvas-2/?link_id=8&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-metro-dc-dsa-weekly-newsletter-for-august-9-2024&email_referrer=email_2419862&email_subject=metro-dc-dsa-weekly-newsletter-for-august-16-2024

44] – On Wed., August 21 at 7 PM ET, there is a virtual Community Outreach Committee meeting.  Plan with Progressive Maryland on how to grow the Progressive movement in the community. 45] – CCAN Action Fund [info@ccanactionfund.org] wants you to help make polluters pay & elect climate champs on Wed., Aug. 21 at 7 PM ET.  For most of this summer, our region has suffered through sweltering heat waves that fossil fuel companies caused and lied about for decades. In response, however, turn up the heat on those polluters! By the end of September, nearly 800 new supporters across Maryland – including Montgomery County, Baltimore, Frederick County, Prince George’s and beyond – will have joined the climate movement and demanded that polluters pay for the consequences of the climate crisis. SIGN UP for the next Maryland Action Member Meetup: https://www.mobilize.us/ccanactionfund/event/664871/?referring_vol=4771955&share_context=dashboard-event-details&sharer_role=SharerRole.ORGANIZER

46] – Nancy Merritt [info@peacealliance.org] is inviting you to Exploring Truth, Power & Peacebuilding, a discussion with Annelle Sheline, former Department of State Foreign Affairs officer, on Wed., Aug. 21 at 8 PM ET.  In March 2024 Annelle Sheline stepped down from her position at the U.S. State Department (DoS), stating, “I can no longer continue what I was doing.  I hope that my resignation can contribute to the many efforts to push the administration to withdraw support for Israel’s war, for the sake of the 2 million Palestinians whose lives are at risk and for the sake of America’s moral standing in the world.”  Since leaving DoS, Dr. Sheline has returned to the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft (Quincy Institute) which believes “that a foreign policy that emphasizes military restraint and diplomatic engagement and cooperation with other nations will serve American interests and values better than policies that prioritize the maintenance of U.S. global dominance through force.”  See www.quincyinst.org

47] – On Wed., Aug. 21 at 8 PM, join a virtual Common Cause organized Letter to the Editor Party: Democracy Survey 2024.  RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/dfadcoalition/event/418654/?followup_modal_context=organization_newsletter_custom_recommendations

As we gear up for the upcoming elections, our "Our Democracy 2024" campaign is crucial in ensuring that voters are well-informed about where candidates stand on key democracy issues. Remember, these candidates are running to represent YOU—it’s vital to understand their plans for our democracy. Question candidates for Congress and state offices about their commitment to pro-democracy reforms and holding them accountable. Your role is key: candidates need to hear from voters like you to clarify their positions and commit to making our government work for everyone. Make democracy a priority for every candidate!

48] – On Wed., Aug. 21 from 8 to 8:30 PM ET, join Swing Left for a volunteer orientation. This orientation will continue on Sept. 4 at 8 PM ET. Take on MAGA extremism—and win—in 2024, and beyond! During the 30-minute orientation, share the most effective volunteer options. Extremism has taken root and is now thriving in the Republican Party. This emboldened GOP is attacking democracy itself—designing extreme legislative gerrymanders, rigging the courts, attempting to subvert election results, and stripping away the democratic voice of the people—in order to lock in permanent minority rule.   Swing Left has the tools, programs, and community infrastructure to help you get involved strategically in whatever way you can, no matter where you are on your civic engagement journey. 49] – The Allies Solidarity Network was launched to unite nonprofits during this Election and beyond. The group is committed to providing empowering tools to address harassment in all its forms. Join for a training and help create a world filled with humanity that respects our right to be. Take a How to be an Ally When you Stand up against Street Harassment training on Thurs., Aug. 22 at 4 PM ET. As more of our personal and professional lives go digital, online hate and harassment are on the rise. Abusive trolls join forces to disproportionately target BIPOCs, women, and LGBTQ+ folks to intimidate, discredit, and silence. Each and every one of us can be an ally. In this free, one-hour, interactive training, we’ll give you the tools you need to intervene safely and effectively in online abuse using the 5D’s of bystander intervention.  The goal is to reduce instances of workplace harassment online and in person by giving employees the tools they need to disrupt those perpetrating the harassment. Employees with the right information on how to be an effective online bystander in the midst of workplace harassment using a proven 5D’s methodology; 98% of employees leave the training committing to intervene next time they witness disrespect or harassment.

50] –The People's Action [info@peoplesaction.org] starting on Thurs., Aug. 22 at 5 PM ET and Sat., Aug. 24 from 1 to 4 PM ET will be doing Deep Canvass Election phone banks.  RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/peoplesaction/event/565765/?link_id=3&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-whats-next-after-bidens-decision&email_referrer=email_2393896&email_subject=whats-next-after-bidens-decision

People’s Action has a vision for the future in which we all have a say, we all have what we need, and we all belong. In that vision, our government and our economy serve all of us, not a handful of billionaires, and concerns about corporate profits take a back seat to the well-being of our people and our planet. Over the coming weeks, reach out to voters in critical states to share this vision with them and invite them to join us in working towards it. The next phone bank at 5 PM ET is on Sat., Aug. 17.   These calls will continue through Thurs., Sept. 12 at 5 PM ET.

To be continued.
