36] – Check out virtually HOW FACT-CHECKING WORKS – AND WHY IT MATTERS on Thurs., Aug. 15 from 2 to 3 PM ET. Fact-checking serves an important function in our news and politics, but it’s not well understood by the general public. What’s involved in fact-checking? How can we recognize when something we’re reading has been adequately verified? With so much questionable information circulating, understanding how fact-checking works can help us better determine when news and information is reliable and trustworthy – or not. In this webinar, Kurt Sampsel of PEN America will provide an overview of the main types of fact-checking and what’s involved, followed by a conversation with Wilkine Brutus of WLRN radio Miami and Laura Zommer of Spanish-language information hub Factchequeado about the methods they use to verify information and how fact-checking helps them tell stories and inform their audiences. 37] –The People's Action [info@peoplesaction.org] starting on Thurs., Aug. 15 at 5 PM ET will be doing Deep Canvass Election phone banks.  RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/peoplesaction/event/565765/?link_id=3&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-whats-next-after-bidens-decision&email_referrer=email_2393896&email_subject=whats-next-after-bidens-decision

People’s Action has a vision for the future in which we all have a say, we all have what we need, and we all belong. In that vision, our government and our economy serve all of us, not a handful of billionaires, and concerns about corporate profits take a back seat to the well-being of our people and our planet. Over the coming weeks, reach out to voters in critical states to share this vision with them and invite them to join us in working towards it. The next phone bank at 5 PM ET is on Sat., Aug. 17.   These calls will continue through Thurs., Sept. 12 at 5 PM ET.

38] – On Throwdown Thursdays join a Virtual Phone Bank on Aug. 15 from 5 to 6:30 PM ET. With a critical and competitive Senate race this November, help to ensure a progressive victory. Play a crucial role in preventing a Republican takeover that would shift the balance of power in the Senate. Reach out to the community to raise awareness about the importance of this race, candidate agendas and encourage voters to help save the Senate. Register for more than one outreach opportunity and feel free to share the link with friends, coworkers, and neighbors: https://www.mobilize.us/progressivemaryland/event/641284/?emci=e46ae348-e942-ef11-86c3-6045bdd9e096&emdi=6e2df1ab-ef42-ef11-86c3-6045bdd9e096&ceid=136680

42] –Massachusetts Peace Action [info@masspeaceaction.org] on Thurs., Aug. 15 at 8 PM ET will virtually host The Border Industrial Complex in the Time of Elections.  As the US presidential election approaches, migration at the southern border becomes more and more of a lightning rod for demagoguery and a gold mine for the border industrial complex. False narratives and political theater gain headlines while the struggle of people seeking safety and a better life gets worse and yet largely goes unreported. This webinar will focus on the nuts and bolts of the border industrial complex, including contracts, budgets, and trends, and on the chaos being generated for power and profit in this time of electioneering mendacity. Todd Miller, Tucson, Arizona, is the co-producer of the Border Chronicle, a biweekly newsletter of original, on-the-ground reporting, analysis, and commentary.
