Friends,

Let me know if you are interested in joining a vigil outside the jail calling for Chelsea’s release.  It could be a one-time event or we could consider doing a monthly vigil.

WASHINGTON — Chelsea Manning, the former Army intelligence analyst who provided archives of secret military documents to WikiLeaks in 2010, was taken into custody on Friday after a federal judge found her in contempt for refusing to testify before a grand jury that is investigating the anti-secrecy group.

Judge Claude H. Hilton of Federal District Court in the Eastern District of Virginia ruled that Ms. Manning must stay in civil detention until she testifies. Ms. Manning had vowed not to cooperate in the investigation even though prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia granted immunity for her testimony.

In a statement posted on Twitter after she was arrested, Ms. Manning said she had ethical objections to the secrecy of the grand-jury system and “will not comply” with the subpoena.

The case is part of a long-running criminal inquiry into WikiLeaks and its leader, Julian Assange, that dates to the Obama administration and which the Trump administration revived. Ms. Manning said on Thursday that prosecutors on Wednesday had asked her a series of questions about WikiLeaks before the grand jury, but she had responded to every question by saying it violated her constitutional rights.

Mr. Assange has been living for years in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London to avoid arrest. Prosecutors charged him under seal last summer, a fact they inadvertently revealed in a court filing in November.

The precise charge against him remains murky, but trying to convict him of a crime for publishing classified information he received from someone else would raise novel and profound First Amendment issues. The Obama administration had decided against trying to charge him because of fears that establishing a precedent that his actions were a crime could chill investigative journalism.
“Chelsea is a tremendously courageous person and this outcome was not unexpected but this an appealable order,” said her lawyer, Moira Meltzer-Cohen, after the hearing.

Joshua Stueve, a spokesman for the United States attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, said the government did not want to confine Ms. Manning, relaying a statement that Tracy Doherty-McCormick, a federal prosecutor, had made after the judge opened part of the contempt hearing on Friday.

“It has always been our intent and hope for her to testify and comply with the valid court order and valid grand jury investigation,” Ms. Doherty-McCormick said. “Ms. Manning could change her mind right now and do so. It is her choice. This is a rule of law issue, and Ms. Manning is not above the law

During her court-martial in 2013, Ms. Manning had admitted sending WikiLeaks large archives of secret documents. Her bulk disclosure vaulted the group and Mr. Assange to global fame years before WikiLeaks gained a different type of notoriety for publishing stolen Democratic emails that Russian hackers had stolen during the 2016 presidential campaign.

In a lengthy confession in 2013, Ms. Manning said she had interacted online with someone who was likely Mr. Assange. But she said she acted of her own accord and was not directed by anyone at WikiLeaks. Ms. Manning said prosecutors had wanted her to go over those same events.

“The grand jury’s questions pertained to disclosures from nine years ago, and took place six years after an in-depth computer forensics case, in which I testified for almost a full day about these events,” she said in the statement. “I stand by my previous testimony. I will not participate in a secret process that I morally object to, particularly one that has been historically used to entrap and persecute activists for protected political speech.”

A military judge in 2013 had sentenced Ms. Manning to 35 years in prison, and, and counting her time in pretrial custody, she served about seven years — by far the longest prison time any American has served for leaking government secrets to the public — before President Barack Obama commuted the remainder of her sentence in 2017. As a transgender person struggling to transition to life as a woman, she had a difficult time in a male military prison and twice tried to commit suicide in 2016.

The contempt hearing on Friday was partly closed, but the judge had opened it for a portion in which Ms. Meltzer-Cohen argued that Ms. Manning should be confined at home. The judge rejected that request and Ms. Manning was taken to the women’s wing of the federal detention center in Alexandria, Va., Ms. Meltzer-Cohen said.

Mr. Stueve said federal officials had taken steps to ensure that Ms. Manning’s medical needs would be met while she remained in custody.

Confinement for defying a grand-jury subpoena can last until the term of the jury is over, after which prosecutors would have to obtain a new subpoena and start the process over if they wanted to continue to press the issue. Both Ms. Meltzer-Cohen and Mr. Stueve declined to say when the current jury’s term is set to end.

19] -- SUPPORT AMAZON WORKERS OF CONSCIENCE.  We are in a deep struggle to support conscience within the high tech community, which may be the only way to prevent a major leap into artificial intelligence warfare that we see the beginnings of in the expanding global U.S. drone war system.  This may be of particular interest to Johns Hopkins' Navy-funded researchers, some of whom have been working on swarming drone technology.

These are not major asks and can be a powerful reinforcement of conscience at an extremely critical moment.  Please consider circulating this link to your lists encouraging people to sign the linked RootsAction petition - https://www.knowdrones.com/blog/2019/3/6/support-amazon-workers-who-dont-want-to-work-for-war and leafletting Whole Foods in your areas. 22] – On Mon., Mar. 11 from 4 to 5 PM, catch up with China: Kidnapped by the Communist Party, hosted by The Institute of World Politics, 1521 16th St. NW, WDC 20036. The Chinese Communist Party has ruled China for decades, bringing untold disaster upon the Chinese people. Why is it so tenacious, and why do democratic nations continue to engage with it? With decades of experience facing off against communist authorities, human rights activist Chen Guangcheng illuminates the structure of the party-state system in China and its disastrous impact on both Chinese citizens domestically and democratic nations abroad.

Guangcheng, known to many as "the barefoot lawyer," was born and raised in a poor, remote village in Shandong, China. Blind since infancy and barred from school until his late teens, he nonetheless taught himself law as a young adult and became a committed advocate for the poor, disabled, and persecuted. His work drew the ire of the authorities, leading to over seven years of harassment including repeated house arrests, detention in black jails, and over four years in prison. After twenty months of brutal isolation in his own home, on April 20, 2012, he made a dramatic escape that caught the attention of international media. The American embassy in Beijing secured his temporary safety before high-level diplomatic negotiations enabled his exodus to the US. Since beginning his advocacy work, Mr. Chen has been the recipient of numerous awards including Time Magazine 100 Most Influential List (2006), The Ramon Magsaysay Award (2007), The Lantos Human Rights Prize (2012), the UK Parliament’s Westminster Award (2013), and the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy Courage Award (2014).  See https://www.facebook.com/events/2133080913670595/.

23] – On Mon., Mar. 11 from 6 to 9 PM, attend the March for Our Schools Rally, hosted by Baltimoreans for Educational Equity – BEE at the Maryland State House, 100 State Circle, Annapolis 21401.  The Kirwan Commission and its reforms are a once in a lifetime opportunity to change the education landscape in Maryland.  Check out From March for our Schools at https://marchforourschools.com.  Maryland legislators have the historic chance to fix the $2.9 billion funding gap impacting Maryland’s schools — an average of $2 million in every school across the state. But now some leaders in Annapolis are saying educators and students have to wait ANOTHER YEAR before they finally fix this problem. The kids can’t wait. It’s time to give them the support they deserve.  See https://www.facebook.com/events/785286925137808/. Progressive Maryland will also be there to stand with educators, parents, and students from across the state to demand fully funded and equitable public schools! Although Nazi Germany and the Jim Crow South were different, Nazi leaders learned from racist thought and practices in the Jim Crow South. Take a look at how racism and antisemitism were linked in this era and what the implications are today.

This event is the second in the two-part Hate and Its Impact series. The first program, Hate and Its Impact: Sowing the Seeds of Global Antisemitism, focused on the roots of antisemitism and the continued global impact they have today.  Reservations are required. 32] -- On Tues., Mar. 12 from 7:30 to 9:30 PM, see the film COINTELPRO 101, hosted by the National Black United Front (NBUF) at the Emergence Community Arts, 733 Euclid St. NW, WDC 20001.  There will also be a letter writing campaign to political prisoners.  An F.B.I. report leaked in October and scrutinized during an oversight hearing of the House Judiciary Committee warns of an emergent domestic terror threat sweeping the nation and threatening the lives of law enforcement officers: the “Black Identity Extremist” (“B.I.E.”) movement. This designation, just recently invented by the F.B.I., is as frightening and dangerous as the bureau’s infamous Cointelpro program of the 1960s and ’70s, under which J. Edgar Hoover set out to disrupt and destroy virtually any group with the word “black” in its name. Today, entirely nonviolent black activists face violations of their civil liberties and even violence if they’re deemed part of B.I.E.

COINTELPRO may not be a well-understood acronym but its meaning and continuing impact are absolutely central to understanding the government’s wars and repression against progressive movements. COINTELPRO represents the state’s strategy to prevent movements and communities from overturning white supremacy and creating racial justice. COINTELPRO is both a formal program of the FBI and a term frequently used to describe a conspiracy among government agencies—local, state, and federal—to destroy movements for self-determination and liberation for Black, Brown, Asian, and Indigenous struggles, as well as mount an institutionalized attack against allies of these movements and other progressive organizations.

This is a 56-minute educational film that will open the door to understanding this history. This documentary will introduce viewers new to this history to the basics and direct them to other resources where they can learn more. The intended audiences are the generations that did not experience the social justice movements of the sixties and seventies. See https://www.facebook.com/events/395046647733187/.

To be continued.

Trump Knew It All, From the Beginning

Trump Knew It All, From the Beginning
A profile shot of Donald Trump

March 8, 2019
Every week seems to bring another Trump scandal. There are so many now we’re going to have to start numbering them. Up until now the sheer volume of alleged misdeeds and malfeasance has actually worked in the president’s favor. There is so much out there that it’s hard to keep the whole picture straight in your mind and that has the weird effect of making things seem less serious than they actually are.
We know that the Trump base and the vast majority of Republican voters still support the president and think it’s all nothing but a witch hunt. They are mesmerized by the president and propagandized by Fox News and other right-wing media. But I would imagine that even people who don’t like Trump but don’t follow all this closely or in much detail wonder whether maybe the whole thing is just a collection of complaints that don’t really add up to anything.
That’s why it’s meaningful when the likes of Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen of Axios, journalists whom the political establishment sees as avatars of acceptable mainstream thinking, decide that it’s time to take stock of how many scandals are now being investigated and how wide the scope of the alleged criminality and corruption has become. It’s rather sobering. On Thursday they wrote out a partial list, entitling it, “The biggest political scandal in American history.”
VandeHei and Allen report that historians tell them there are only two previous scandals that even come close to what we are dealing with now: One is Watergate, and even Americans who weren’t alive at the time have heard plenty about that one. The other would be Teapot Dome, a bribery scandal under the manifestly corrupt Warren G. Harding administration in the 1920s.
Trump’s scandals include the Russia investigation, of course, which the Axios authors call one of the greatest counter-espionage cases of all time; the Stormy Daniels campaign finance scandal; the lies about the Trump Tower Moscow project (which is likely also part of the Russia counterintelligence investigation); the more than 100 contacts between Russian agents or emissaries and members of the Trump campaign; Michael Flynn’s inexplicable lies to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador; the firing of James Comey and other acts of obstruction of justice; and the granting of security clearances to Trump’s daughter and son-in-law over the objections of the intelligence agencies.
Their list does not include all the administration officials under suspicion of corruption while in office or the scandals swirling around the president’s family business, which he refused to give up upon taking office and is still closely involved with, even promoting his resort properties and private clubs with personal appearances nearly every weekend. Top executives and foreign representatives seeking favor from the administration ostentatiously spend money at Trump hotels to gain the attention of the president and his family. In the wake of a recent unfavorable court ruling over his golf course in Scotland, Trump even posted a promotional tweet openly promising foreign policy considerations:

Very proud of perhaps the greatest golf course anywhere in the world. Also, furthers U.K. relationship!

The U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York is investigating Trump’s inaugural committee and various financial issues regarding the Trump Organization. New York’s attorney general and insurance regulators are looking into various charges of fraud. And the House of Representatives has launched at least half a dozen different probes into various of the matters mentioned above.
Even the purveyors of Beltway conventional wisdom are starting to see that regardless of what Robert Mueller’s eventual report may conclude, what we already know makes this the most scandal-plagued presidency in history. And the big question that hangs over all of it is the proverbial one uttered years ago by Sen. Howard Baker, who was the ranking Republican on the Senate Watergate Committee: “What did the president know and when did he know it?”
It’s tempting to believe that Donald Trump is just too dim to have known what he was doing. That theory goes like this: He had no experience in government and just didn’t realize that his ruthless tactics, which were customary in the business world, would be seen as corrupt and possibly criminal. He was busy running for president and then being president.
That is almost certainly wrong. First of all, Trump’s business history is full of examples of corrupt practices, from his days as a casino magnate to redlining of rental housing, fraudulent development projects and partnering with the mob. Not long ago, we saw a massive exposé of the fraudulent scheme Trump’s father set up, from which his family massively profited for decades. It’s not as if he’s ever operated with integrity.
Let’s take one example from the recent revelations by Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer. Cohen produced checks signed by Trump, after he became president, that Cohen says were to pay him back for the hush money Cohen had paid to Stormy Daniels. It has been suggested that perhaps Trump didn’t know what those checks were for. After all, he’s a wealthy man who signs $35,000 checks all the time and he might have assumed they were for general legal work. But Donald Trump doesn’t operate that way. He told The New York Times during the transition:
[I]n theory, I can be president of the United States and run my business 100 percent, sign checks on my business, which I am phasing out of very rapidly, you know, I sign checks, I’m the old-fashioned type. I like to sign checks so I know what is going on as opposed to pressing a computer button, boom, and thousands of checks are automatically sent. It keeps, it tells me what’s going on a little bit and it tells contractors that I’m watching.
Is it reasonable to believe that he signed those checks in the Oval Office without knowing what they were for?
Bloomberg recently reported that Trump was heavily involved in the inauguration festivities. His inaugural committee chair, Tom Barrack, said Trump wanted to know everything about the finances. There remain big questions about what happened to the massive sums of money collected for that lame inaugural celebration. We know that in at least one case foreign donors to the inaugural committee were told to send their money directly to other people donors in order to hide the origins of the money. Is it remotely conceivable that Trump wouldn’t have known about such arrangements, or that he had no idea where any of that money was going?
Big questions remain about whether the then-candidate knew in advance about the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russian emissaries who had promised dirt on Hillary Clinton. After all, he had a big deal brewing in Moscow at the time. Are we really expected to believe that Donald Trump Jr., who was heavily involved with that deal, didn’t mention the meeting to dear old Dad? Not bloody likely. Hundreds of millions of dollars were at stake.
Donald Trump is a narcissistic control freak, particularly when it comes to his cash flow. When it comes down to it, most of these scandals are about money — including his Russia entanglements, now that we know about the Moscow project. So to answer Howard Baker’s question: It’s pretty clear that the president knew everything, and knew it all from the very beginning.

8] –  Usually, the Baltimore Ethical Society, 2521 St. Paul St., Baltimore 21218, meets on Sundays, and generally there is a speaker and discussion at 10:30 AM.  On Sun., Mar. 10, the platform address is “What Do You Really Own Anyway?”  What is it to “own” something? Is it just to have exclusive access to, or control over, a resource? How did the concept of “ownership” arise? Is it true that “property is theft?” How have the concepts of property and money evolved so as to de-emphasize the shared resources and relationships that don’t fit so easily into the concept of “ownership”? Hugh Taft-Morales explores different ways that members of the Baltimore Ethical Society can approach “owning” our community and our mission.  Hugh Taft-Morales joined the Baltimore Ethical Society as its professional leader in 2010, the same year he was certified by the American Ethical Union as an Ethical Culture Leader. Call 410-581-2322 or email ask@bmorethical.org.

11] -- On Sun., Mar. 10 from 3 to 5:15 PM, come for a Hinenu Discussion: Solidarity and Engagement, hosted by the Baltimore Justice Shtiebl at Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., Baltimore 21218.  What does our community mean and intend by “Justice Shtiebel”? Join the Values Committee and other Hinenu members for the first of a three-part Hinenu beit midrash and discussion series, each with a different focus, to help us answer this fundamental question! Build relationships and community with each other, make the way to a collective discernment and articulation of our community values, and enjoy learning together.

At this first session focused on “Solidarity and Engagement,” think in terms of traditional terms for Jewish values such as Hachnasat Orchim (Welcoming Guests), Tikkum Olam (Improving the World), and Tzedek (Justice). Talk about how we relate to struggles like racial justice, feminism, economic justice, queer liberation, disability justice, and immigrant rights; and how we engage with movements for justice and equality in Palestine/Israel, Baltimore, and beyond.

These initial three sessions are meant for sharing, learning, and listening with each other to start discovering where we are and where we want to be as a community. No decisions will be made at this session and no agreement need be reached. All Hinenu members are welcome to an open, respectful environment.  The other two sessions will be focused on “Religious and Spiritual Practice” (March 27) and “How We Relate to Each Other in Community” (April 7).  Go to https://www.facebook.com/events/251061485769510/.

12] – On Sun., Mar. 10 through Thurs., Apr. 11 from 4 to 7 PM, be a part of a Homeless Period Campaign, hosted by Project PLASE, Inc., 1814 Maryland Ave., Baltimore 21201.  Tickets are at www.firstgiving.com. Join @Project PLASE in raising awareness and funds to help homeless individuals and their #homelessperiod.  Make a donation at https://bit.ly/2GRF8rM.  Challenge a friend, organization or group to show their support for the #homelessperiod and to keep the challenge going.  Post into your social media posts to keep the challenge going.

In addition to dealing with the everyday hardships that come with homelessness, people who menstruate have an additional level of hardship each month. With the lack of resources to buy menstrual products, they must choose between spending money on these products, or eating. The #HomelessPeriod Campaign is a fundraiser organized by Project PLASE in accordance with the Why Women Cry Conference. It intends to raise funds to create menstrual hygiene kits that can be given to PLASE clients and homeless people. The kits will be distributed by Project PLASE staff and volunteers. Homelessness brings trauma and health issues into one’s life. We believe menstruation care should not be a secondary choice for people, and that all people deserve equal access to period product. Please join Project PLASE in the #homelessperiod Campaign to provide everyone with equitable menstrual care. Visit https://www.facebook.com/events/244516872997983/?event_time_id=244516896331314.

13] -- On Sun., Mar. 10 from 5 to 7 PM, get involved with Beating Guns Tour, hosted by Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, 2424 McElderry St., Baltimore 21205.  America, a country in which mass shootings have become almost commonplace, is better at protecting guns than protecting people, say Shane Claiborne and Mike Martin in their new book “Beating Guns: Hope for People Who Are Weary of Violence.” Holding the shameful record for most gun deaths at about 38,000 per year, it’s clear that this country is in the midst of an epidemic. Bestselling author and activist Claiborne, and Martin, a Mennonite pastor turned blacksmith, offer a Christian response to the crisis, transcending the rhetoric of “thoughts and prayers” with concrete ways to address the problem. “We have the audacity to believe that it is not the will of God for approximately 105 people to die from guns each day in the U.S.,” they say.

Inspired by the biblical prophets’ call to “beat swords into plowshares,” Claiborne and Martin will tour the country this spring with a forge and other blacksmithing tools. The Beating Guns Tour is a 90-minute event that will feature music, art, and stories of people impacted by gun violence, culminating with an invitation for the audience to take the hammer and transform a gun into garden tools. Claiborne and Martin have also launched the Disarming Network to help people connect with safe spaces to disable guns according to Federal ATF guidelines.

Addressing the spiritual dimension of the problem, they point out that violence is not just about guns. As Christians who practice nonviolence, they believe “Christians cannot carry a cross in one hand and a weapon in the other.” Rather, they “plot for peace,” engaging in the practice of de-escalation of everyday interaction. De-escalation of the small things helps keep the big events from happening.”

Tired of waiting for legislative action on common sense gun laws, Claiborne and Martin say "we will not wait on politicians to turn death into life." The beauty of the prophets’ vision is that the people themselves transform their weapons: "Peace begins with the people of God, who refuse to kill and beat their weapons into farm tools. We will make violence extinct by refusing to kill." See https://www.facebook.com/events/996528230540935/.

14] – On Sun., Mar. 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, see the film "Ghost Hunting," hosted by the Baltimore-Palestine Solidarity at Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., Baltimore 21218.  Watch a trailer: https://www.akkafilms.ch/en/ghost-hunting-3/. For more than 25 years, one image has been haunting director Raed Andoni – that of a boy (18), head covered with a bag and handcuffed, sitting inside a prison yard. The same sounds always accompany this image: metal doors opening and footsteps slowly approaching. Through the lower part of the bag, the boy can see a man wearing white sneakers walking away. A survivor of the prison experience himself, Raed has fragmented memories that he can’t distinguish as real or imaginary.  In order to confront the ghost that haunts him, he decides to rebuild the Al-Moscobiya investigation center in an empty warehouse near Ramallah. A casting call for former prisoners results in an eclectic group of construction workers, a blacksmith, an architect and an artist. As they build a copy of their former jail based on their own memories, Raed digs deep into their memories, triggered by reenactments and roleplaying. For this purpose, he focuses on the story of Mohammad (50), whom the resistance to the investigation methods – stoked by laughter and rebellion – made him a hero among Palestinians.

The film will be followed by a brief discussion. Homemade Arabic food will be available before and after the film.  The suggested donation is $5. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.  Note this warning: this film reenacts trauma and torture experienced by Palestinians in Israeli prisons. See https://www.facebook.com/events/306431326686129/.

Let me know if you would be interested in delivering a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Friends,

Let me know if you would be interested in delivering this letter to Mike Pompeo.  The idea would be to do the delivery a few days after the March 30 anti-NATO rally.  Possible dates are April 1st through April 3rd.

Kagiso,

Max

April --, 2019

Michael R. Pompeo
U.S. Department of State
2201 C Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20520

Secretary of State Pompeo:

We are a group of peace and justice advocates who are seeking a meeting with you.  We are not writing out of enmity, but out of a sincere desire to offer our suggestion that diplomacy rather than threats will help relieve tension and might create stability which will be a benefit for the United States and for other countries.

For example, we appreciate that the Trump administration has engendered hope regarding the policy with North Korea.  It is welcome that military exercises with South Korea are unnecessary and provocative and that there is a need for peace agreement to finally be signed.

However, it has to be pointed out that the U.S. is engaging in numerous wars, most notably in Yemen. The military budget is bankrupting the government.  The War on Terror has failed miserably.  Even allies of the United States have criticized this abhorrent foreign policy of which you are a principal architect.  We think you could benefit from a meeting with us where we would share our constructive criticism aimed at radically changing U.S. foreign policy.

You have supported waterboarding and other forms of torture. You criticized the Obama administration for closing "black sites" - secret prisons used to interrogate suspects overseas - and the requirement for interrogators to adhere to anti-torture laws. You are resisting ending US military support for the Saudi-led war on the people of Yemen. You are aware that in Yemen, US interrogators have questioned detainees in secret prisons run by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and UAE-backed Yemeni forces where torture is widespread. You are also a proponent of denying due process to prisoners languishing in Guantanamo.

Like the president, you have embraced many dictatorial regimes, including Egypt, the Philippines, Brazil and of course Saudi Arabia. You have embraced his choices of John Bolton, who has called for the bombing of Iran and North Korea, as national security advisor, and Elliott Abrams, who was involved with death squads in El Salvador and Guatemala, as special envoy for Venezuela.

Now you, Bolton and Abrams are involved in trying to overthrow the government in Venezuela. And at the height of hypocrisy, you have insulted the citizens of Venezuela by declaring Juan Guaido as the interim president. The U.S. sanctions imposed upon Venezuela are hurting the people there much more than the government

Venezuela does not represent a threat to the United States.  Instead of trying to destabilize Venezuela, the US should engage in dialogue with the Maduro government to assist the country in these difficult times.

The list of disastrous foreign policy decisions is endless.  For example, Trump abrogated the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, and is encouraging the development of “usable” nuclear weapons.

In Poland, you tried to rally various governments worldwide to join the U.S. in making war with Iran. Most European allies ignored your proposal, recognizing that Iran has been complying with the nuclear treaty negotiated with the Obama administration despite Trump’s decision to cancel it.  However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does support a US invasion of Iran.

The Trump administration cut about $200 million for development projects and humanitarian aid in the West Bank and Gaza. And it cut about $300 million to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees.

The US has an estimated 800 military bases around the world, all of which contribute to the climate chaos buffeting the world.  The Pentagon is the greatest institutional consumer of fossil fuels. For example, Oil Change International estimates the Pentagon’s 2003-2007 $2 trillion Iraq War generated more than three million metric tons of CO2 pollution per month.

It seems that it would be in your best interest to meet with us.  We would detail what must be done to bring about a significant change from the current foreign policy morass.  Continuing the current policy will only cause more death, destruction, devastation and an immense drain of tax dollars.  It is essential to severely cut military spending, end the belligerent threats of other countries, close a majority of the foreign bases, including Guantanamo, stop propping up dictators, show respect for human rights, end arm sales to dictatorial regimes, and engage in dialogue not belligerence.  As the Secretary of State, you have an obligation to protect the people of this country.  Real security can only happen when tax dollars are reallocated from military spending towards housing, education, environmental regulations, health services, the infrastructure and programs aimed at lifting people out of poverty.

Let us know when you or a representative would be willing to meet with us.  We would adjust our schedules to be there.

Peace,
