They are trying to grow a Catholic Worker House in Irvington (West Baltimore). In a nutshell, there is a lot that a volunteer could do in that neighborhood/Baltimore, in addition to prayer and daily community living and in addition to plugging into all the good work that people are already doing in and around Baltimore (and beyond).  If you think you might know of anyone who might be interested in starting a conversation with them about becoming such a volunteer/community member, please contact Jeff/Suzanne at 443-690-6872.

7] – Molly Amster, Jews United for Justice [molly@jufj.org] wants you to help over ride Hogan's vetoes. The next Maryland state session will be a busy one, with redistricting, elections, and a potentially lingering global pandemic. Hit the ground now with veto overrides and ensure that the bills progressives worked so hard to pass become law. Governor Hogan vetoed bills that would protect immigrants and make our (in)justice system a bit more just. It's critical that enough state legislators commit to overriding his vetoes, so we can accomplish what we set out to do last session, and move us closer to making Maryland a state where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, no matter their immigration or incarceration status. Click here to ask your legislator to support these veto overrides: https://jufj.org/mdga22-veto/.

8] – The Maryland Poor Peoples Campaign MoCo Region is looking for volunteers to assist with local outreach on COVID relief and voter registration times through July 25. Sign up to help distribute COVID relief benefits and/or voting flyers to food distribution sites and/or churches, primarily in the Gaithersburg area, but suggestions for additional sites are welcome. You will receive a template email for outreach. Protections for some tenants from eviction under a CDC order are set to expire July 31, so help do the bulk of this outreach in early July so more tenants can receive relief by July 31. Sign up at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd0L3LMuABH5nSWiiIVLdY0tpVK0YcH6OLdk6mvQWMV_UCu1A/viewform?link_id=2&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-md-ppc-weekly-update-9&email_referrer=email_1213998&email_subject=md-ppc-weekly-update.

9] – Ben Betz, People For the American Way [alerts@pfaw.org] is asking you to Help Get Out The Vote in Virginia by signing up to write letters to voters in Virginia through September 18! Since the Virginia Vote Forward campaign launched last month, 120,000 people have committed to sending letters! The goal is to reach more than 500,000 voters Sign up to write letters to Get out the Vote at https://votefwd.org/pfaw.

Virginia is a crucial bellwether state vital to America’s political landscape, and its state elections this year will have a serious impact on the 2022 national midterms. People For is gearing up to be very active in this year’s state-level campaign, and it seeks national support to make sure that the progressive gains from 2020 continue in the former seat of the Confederacy this year.  People For is thrilled to announce that we are once again partnering with Vote Forward, an exciting campaign to increase voter participation through letter-writing to key voters in battleground states and districts. Vote Forward’s letter-writing project is incredibly simple, as all you need are stamps, stationery, and a pen.

10] – Usually, the Baltimore Ethical Society, 2521 St. Paul St., Baltimore 21218, meets on Sundays, and generally there is a speaker and discussion at 10:30 AM.  On Sun., July 18, the subject is “Theatrical Solutions to Fast Fashion.”  Can one address the problem of fast fashion through the lens of theatrical costuming? We all get dressed every morning. How can we do it more ethically and mindfully? Costuming for theatre provides a great angle from which to assess our own sartorial habits and plan for a more sustainable (and fashionable!) future. Alizon Santamaria is a member of the Baltimore Ethical Society and regularly presents platforms during “Summer Sundays” when members are invited to present topics of interest to them. The Zoom link and more info can be obtained at PRESIDENT@BMORETHICAL.ORG.

This webinar will cover the most blatant US intervention in each election. Speakers Chuck Kaufman and Nils McCune will address the US funding of the opposition; the RAIN United States Aid for International Development destabilization project; US sanctions and other recent US interference. This will be the day before the July 19 celebration.

14] – Canada Boat Gaza 2021 is hosting Hidden in Plain Sight: a webinar on Canada-Israel Arms Trade on Sun., July 18 at 3 PM EDT.  Besides the arms trade, there is also trade in surveillance equipment. Register at https://actionnetwork.org/events/hiddeninplainsight?clear_id=true&link_id=1&can_id=cd1b8f7d79234135a2c2af73f90b802e&source=email-hidden-in-plain-sight-uncovering-the-israel-canada-weapons-and-security-trade&email_referrer=email_1227067&email_subject=hidden-in-plain-sight-uncovering-the-israel-canada-weapons-and-security-trade.

A few months ago it was announced that the Canadian military would buy new drone surveillance technology manufactured in Israel and 'battle-tested' during Israel’s 2014 assault on Gaza, when 164 children were killed by drone strikes. While the subsequent public outcry was well-warranted, this announcement was simply a rare peek into a massive—and very secretive— ongoing collaboration between Canada and Israel on their weapons and surveillance systems. This includes extensive investments by the Canadian Pension Fund in Israel's weapons, Canadian companies manufacturing parts for Israel's weapons systems, Canada and Israel conducting joint police and military exercises, and the two countries' regular sharing of security information.

The good news for antiwar and Palestinian human rights activists is that a new searchable database has just been developed — the Database of Israeli Military and Security Export (DIMSE, https://www.dimse.info/).  On this webinar, independent Jewish Voices and World BEYOND War are hosting an interactive webinar to provide an introduction to the Israel-Canada arms and surveillance trade, as well as a hands-on training on how to use DIMSE as a valuable tool to dig into the trade and use of Israeli military, security, police weapons and surveillance systems and their suppliers.

15] – Dr. Bill Honigman for Progressive Democrats of America [info@pdamerica.org] wants you to attend on Sun., July 18 at 4 PM ET a Special Healthcare Town Hall with Nina Turner! PDA proudly joins with and promotes leaders like Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-WA, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT who regularly and especially at times of great adversity fight for someone they don’t know. This #COVID19 pandemic is just such a time, and these leaders are all working to #ExpandMedicareNow while at the same time helping to provide the full quality and equity that is clearly still needed with #SinglePayer #MedicareForAll. One such champion, continually fighting on behalf of those she doesn’t know, for #HealthcareJustice as well as all matters of existential importance, is former OH State Senator and now candidate for Congress Nina Turner.

Hear her perspective from the special election campaign trail that is coming down to the wire with early voting already in progress, and how we can be of help to her campaign. A second guest this week will be another champion and candidate for Congress in CA-30, Shervin Aazami. Sign up at https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0tceuhrzsvHdymeeZRwb-i7X50FJa-HMR4.

64] -- Deborah Weinstein, Coalition on Human Needs [info@chn.org] is doing a one hour webinar on Fri., July 16 at 2 PM ET about moving the agenda forward when Congress is on recess. Significant progress has been made in addressing economic disparities for children, youth, and families with the passage of the American Rescue Plan in March. President Biden has proposed the American Jobs and American Families Plans which would extend short term investments and fight for the future―addressing deep-seated racial inequities in education, jobs, health, housing, and income, while making the rich and corporations pay their fair share in taxes.

Learn what you can do to help pass landmark legislation that would advance racial equity, lift millions out of poverty, help all kids reach their potential, get workers better pay and benefits, and expand health coverage to millions of Americans. RSVP at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_PTHU-gXdQhKDtiOds9of_A?link_id=1&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-webinar-rsvp-how-you-can-move-our-agenda-forward-when-congress-is-on-recess-2&email_referrer=email_1225796&email_subject=webinar-rsvp-how-you-can-move-our-agenda-forward-when-congress-is-on-recess.

70] – We Have a Do-or-Die, Time-Limited Chance to Defeat White Supremacy and Big Money. If you want equal protection so that every voter counts the same regardless of color, income, age, or neighborhood, now is the time to act. If you want freedom from the influence of big money, now is the time to act. In the next months, action by people like you can create a groundswell to pass three major bills (see details in box below). One of them (S. 1) would provide sweeping reforms to end special-interest corruption in our government. Congress must act early this summer or partisan redistricting – based on a flawed census – will have happened. The House of Representatives has the votes to pass these bills, and they can pass the Senate, too - but only if We the People let our senators know how we feel.

If these bills do not pass, action by some state legislatures will reduce the freedom to vote for targeted populations. Get Money Out – Maryland (GMOM) founded For the People – Maryland with 20 other groups to fight for these principles in the U.S. Congress.  Therefore, the filibuster rule will need to change to allow these bills to pass with a simple majority.

While there are several Senators who haven’t formally committed, people in-the-know say if we can convince WV Senator Joe Manchin, the others will come along. Opponents are putting lots of money into WV, and we need to fight back. WV residents tell us that Manchin is often willing to do a 180 degree turn if he gets enough pressure. Volunteers asking his constituents to contact him could trigger the biggest reform since the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Make calls to WV residents on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Please sign up to call on Sat., July 17 from 4 to 6:30 PM ET and try to convince one friend to do so also!  There is good training and support throughout!  Go to https://www.mobilize.us/vopropros/event/389987/.  CALL WEST VIRGINIANS.

71]  Ben Jealous, People For the American Way [alerts@pfaw.org] is asking us to sign up for good trouble on Sat., July 17 to honor John Lewis.  Demand that Congress pass both the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. This is not an either-or discussion. This Saturday marks one year since the passing of Congressperson and civil rights hero John Lewis. Within that year, the Far Right’s attacks on voting rights have grown fiercer than at any time in modern memory, with a wave of racist state legislative attacks on the right to vote reminiscent of the Jim Crow era.

From 7 to 9 PM EDT, go to Jubilee Arts Lot, 1947 Pennsylvania Ave., Baltimore 21217.  See https://www.mobilize.us/pfaw/event/400526/.  From 8 to 10 PM EDT, gather in Black Lives Matter Plaza NW, WDC 20006.  Go to https://www.mobilize.us/pfaw/event/399955/.  From 8 to 9:30 PM EDT, meet in Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park, 1800 Piccard Drive, Rockville 20850.  Visit https://www.mobilize.us/pfaw/event/400572/.

Prevent Nuclear War/Maryland has called attention to the growing danger of nuclear war and the outrageous $1.7 trillion dollars we are spending to upgrade the nuclear arsenal. 76] – Bad Attitude Publishers Announces the release of Beauty Fades /Stupid Lasts Forever and The Trial According to Alan Barysh. In light of the fascist/Q Annon/Truther/Alex Jones and Trump-inspired attack on the capital, Bad attitude Publications has released a photo essay by Alan Barysh. In the follow-up book to Sorry Truther, it was an OUTSIDE JOB Beauty Fades.... gives the reader an upfront look at the reactionary forces and the deadly beliefs these folks uphold. In pictures and texts, one gets a good look at the faces and ideas that pose a real threat to this country. The Trial According to Alan Barysh is a rewrite of the Kafka Classic The Trial. With pictures from the original movie, Alan Barysh rewrites this scathing satire with just a tad more cutting edge satire, and a different ending. The appendix to the book talks about the lonely uphill struggle of Tawanda Jones to get justice for her brother. This afterthought is included, because of the real Kafkesque struggle of the West Family to get justice for her brother. Both books can be purchased on Amazon.com. 33] – The Basel Peace Office [info@baselpeaceoffice.org] wants you to attend on Thurs., July 8 at 11 AM ET a webinar  Youth taking the climate issue to the International Court of Justice. This side event at the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development includes dialogue between youth campaigners, policy makers, human rights experts and legal experts.  Why is climate litigation important? Why go to the International Court of Justice?  National policies/plans and international Climate agreements (such as the Paris Agreement) are inadequate to address the climate threat because they are subject to the political power of vested interests in the fossil fuel economy. Litigation puts human rights and law at the front, and establishes legal responsibility to ensure protection of current and future generations. The ICJ, the world's most authoritative court, will be asked to affirm how this legal responsibility applies globally. Sign up at https://unyd-hlpf-sideevent.limesurvey.net/794254?lang=en.

34] – Molly Amster [molly@jufj.org] invites you to attend a Montgomery County Community Building & Education Meeting on Thurs., July 8 from 12:30 to 2 PM ET. Join Jews United for Justice in Montgomery County for a meeting to discuss current work on building community and planning educational events! You will receive call-in instructions via email after you RSVP at https://jufj.org/event/mc-cbe-7-2021/?sourceid=1020679&emci=f947f534-9ed2-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&emdi=42ab8aac-5ed3-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&ceid=3403859.

35] – Training for Change [info@trainingforchange.org] is offering a workshop DESIGNING DYNAMIC SPACES ONLINE on Thurs., July 8 from 2 to 4 PM ET.  The cost is on a sliding scale.  Sign up at https://www.trainingforchange.org/public_workshops/designing-dynamic-spaces/?amp%3Bqid=.

36] – We Have a Do-or-Die, Time-Limited Chance to Defeat White Supremacy and Big Money.

Please sign up to call on Thurs., July 8 from 6 to 8 PM ET and try to convince one friend to do so also!  There is good training and support throughout!  Go to https://www.mobilize.us/vopropros/event/389987/.  CALL WEST VIRGINIANS.

37] –Amar Ahmad, Massachusetts Peace Action [info@masspeaceaction.org] wants to tell you about a film t0 be screened on Thurs., July 8 at 6 PM ET.  KILLING GAZA was done by Max Blumenthal and Dan Cohen. After watching the film, hear from the filmmakers and journalists for a conversation about the film, Gaza, Palestine, Israel, and US policy. In Killing Gaza, journalists Dan Cohen and Max Blumenthal documented Israel’s 2014 war on Gaza. Yet this film is much more than a documentary about Palestinian resilience and suffering. It is a chilling visual document of war crimes committed by the Israeli military, featuring direct testimony and evidence from the survivors. 38] – The Black Lives Matter Interfaith Coalition invites you to an hour of holding space and offering prayers for all affected by violence in Baltimore. You are invited to enter the Zoom in silence and to offer prayers as you feel led. Sit together in silent prayer as well as spoken prayers for Baltimore, especially for the families, friends and communities of the recent shootings, and for healing and peaceful conflict resolution.

39] –  AFSC [actioncenter@afsc.org] wants you to  Register for “Policing and white supremacy” on Thurs., July 8 at 8 PM ET. This webinar is part of a “Community Safety Beyond Policing” series.   Register at https://www.afsc.org/action/policing-and-white-supremacy?ms=EMA21WR0703&utm_campaign=weekendreading&utm_medium=email&utm_source=weekendreading0703&emci=1f24a1d6-b0d9-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&emdi=ea73d466-fadb-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&ceid=764241.

40] –Stop the Money Pipeline [info@stopthemoneypipeline.com] wants your help on Thurs., July 8 at 8 PM ET for a #DefundLine3 Arts Training.  As unprecedented heatwaves and drought assail much of the country, we need to shout it from the rooftops, paint the streets & cover the walls: #DefundLine3. From July 12-18, activists will be putting up hundreds of beautiful #DefundLine3 posters in cities all across the country. The training will be with long-time movement artists, David Solnit and Cy Wagoner from the NDN Collective.  Sign up at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_iSYKvfLaR_Geyz3MX0JrMw. 31] – For Peace in Yemen, US Must Admit Saudi Lost with Dr. Annelle Sheline on Wed., July 7 from 7 to 8 PM EDT.  Register at https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUqdeiprTwpHNZpvZPI_gjSehmdMLgwiBNT.  After over 6 years of a US-Saudi-UAE war and blockade, Yemen remains the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. One of the reasons why peace remains elusive is that Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Nations are operating under outdated terms. Passed in April of 2015, just one month after Saudi Arabia began its intervention in Yemen, United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216 states that the Houthis must give up their weapons and their territorial gains. These terms have been unacceptable to the Houthis for over 6 years. Hear from Middle East expert Dr. Sheline who will discuss how the US refusal to accept the realities of the Yemen war are keeping it going.  She is a Research Fellow at the Quincy Institute.
