3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

THE NOTICES LIST will include only notices of NCNR actions and related information and is open to any interested person to subscribe.  It will be moderated to maintain focus & will include periodic notices about getting involved in NCNR national organizing.  To join the NOTICES List, send an email message to ncnrnotices-subscribe@lists.riseup.net. 4] – Max is in need of housing.  If you have any leads, please call him at 410-366-1637.  Note that there may be an opportunity for two or three people to move into a “peace house.”  If interested, call Max.

5] – Chuck Michaels is now home, and he will continue his recovery through out-patient therapy.  He is doing very well, speaking well and regularly, getting around well, and also now has permission from his doctor to be left alone, that is unattended, as needed.

The big need going forward over the next few weeks is transportation for a portion of each day to the Sky Neurological Rehabilitation CenterPomona Square, 1700 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville 21208 - just inside the beltway. On a weekly basis, the web site at Caring Bridge will post the specific times that Chuck needs transportation assistance in getting to therapy. 8] – Witness Against Torture continues its 100 Days Campaign.  Go to www.100dayscampaign.org.   Groups have taken on each week through Apr. 30, and there will be daily vigils at the White House from 11 AM to 1 PM.  As well, there will be organized activities from film screenings to lectures and community meetings.  These activities are designed to mobilize people concerned about torture and keep sustained pressure on our elected officials to close Guantanamo with deliberate speed.  Witness Against Torture will have a team in D.C. for the duration of the campaign and will provide logistical support to all participants.  Call Carmen Trotta at 202 277 9869.

11] – A peace vigil takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM on Pennsylvania Ave., by the press gate to the White House. It is organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker. Call 202-882-9649.

12] – Performing Arts at the Community College of Baltimore County and Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School present Atzilut: Concert for Peace on Sat., Mar. 28 at 8:45 PM at the Mintzes Theatre, Rosen Arts Center, Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School, Sara & David S. Brown Campus, 3300 Old Court Road, Pikesville, MD 21208. This ten-member high-energy Middle Eastern ensemble features Arab and Jewish musicians in concert together to make a powerful statement for peace through shared music. They blend virtuoso cantorial vocals with the lightning percussion and hypnotic melodies of a Middle-Eastern orchestra into their own unique contemporary sound. Tickets are $15. 13] – There is a peace vigil to support the Congo every Friday, 4:00 to 6:30 PM at the Rwandan Embassy, 1714 New Hampshire Ave, NW.  Call the Rwandan Embassy at 202-232-2882 and register your concern about Rwanda's aggression towards the Congo.

14] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., Mar. 27 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war with Iraq. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings.

15] – Red Emma's and 2640 are cooperating with the Indypendent Reader, Camp
Baltimore and the Campaign for a Better Baltimore to put on a major three day conference on new strategies for taking back and rebuilding the urban environment, called "The City From Below.”
The conference begins at 5 PM on Fri., Mar. 27 and closes at 5 PM on Sun., Mar. 29.

 

Max Rameau will be speaking at the City From Below opening night panel with David Harvey, Esther Wang and Shiri Pasternak at 7:30 PM at St. John’s, 2640 St. Paul St. on Fri., Mar. 27.  Rameau will speak about "take back the land" on Sat., Mar. 28 at 4 PM at 2640 and again on a panel on "Organizing Models" on Sun., Mar. 29 at noon at 2640, which also features the United Workers, Picture the Homeless and City Life/Vida Urbana.  City Life/Vida Urbana from Boston was probably the first group in the country to start doing direct action anti-foreclosure work, starting well over a year ago.  City Life/Vida Urbana representatives will discuss their work on Sat., Mar. 28 at 6PM at 2640. 17] – The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration Committee is hosting its latest FILM & SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS VIDEO SERIES. The theme is First Amendment rights.  The next film is CINEMA PARADISO [ITALY, 1988] which will be shown on Fri., Mar. 27 at a private home on a large-screen television.  If interested in seeing CINEMA PARADISO, RSVP to Max at 410-366-1637.

Written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, the film includes Jacques Perrin and Philippe Noiret.  In a Sicilian village, the fatherly projectionist takes a boy under his wing and instills a love of movies.  The village priest, though, censors the films.

Doors open at 7 PM, and the DVD starts at 7:30 PM.  There is no charge, and refreshments will be available.  A discussion will follow.

19] – The Combatants for Peace speaking tour continues on Fri., Mar. 27 at 7:30 PM at St. Columbia’s Episcopal Church, 4201 Albemarle St., NW, WDC 20016.  The church is one block from the Tenleytown Metro. Go to www.RebuildingAlliance.org.

Yaniv Reshef is a former soldier and Bassam Aramin is a former fighter, and they are doing a Courage of Conscience speaking tour.  Rashef, whose home is in range of Gaza missiles, was a foot soldier in a sabotage unit of the Israeli Army – and chose to fight no more.  Palestinian Aramin served seven years in jail for planning an attack against Israeli soldiers – and chose no more violence. Just two years ago, Bassam lost his daughter to an Israeli soldier’s rubber-coated bullet.

20] –  There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. 21] – March 28 is the 30th anniversary of the near nuclear meltdown accident at Three Mile Island.  Robbie Leppzer is re-releasing a two-hour public radio documentary, VOICES FROM THREE MILE ISLAND, which he produced in 1980.  This program was originally broadcast on 65 public radio stations across the United States on the first anniversary of the accident at Three Mile Island. It is available on two audio CDs or as a free MP3 audio download or for listening on the web at: www.turningtide.com.

22] – Join National Lawyers Guild members of the Mid Atlantic Region for an exciting day of radical lawyering on Sat., Mar. 28 from noon to 6 PM at the Univ. of Maryland Law School, 500 W. Baltimore Ave. The cost is $20 for attorneys, $10 for the paralegals/secretaries, clerks & the public and $5 for law students.  The plenary lunch is at noon, and that is an extra $5.

24] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. This vigil has been the target of counter-demonstrators and harassment from the "Chester County Victory Movement" but has grown and persisted.  Go to www.ccpeace.org.

25] – There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Sat., Mar. 28. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It. --Psalms 34:14." 27] – The Rainbow Labyrinth of Peace by Sandra Wasko-Flood will be on display at the Visionary Art Museum on Sat., Mar. 28.  There will be Glow Ball Dinner from 6 to 9 PM which will include a gourmet dinner and fundraising event with a special guest, musical legend and bard DONOVAN! Then there will be an AFTERGLOW PARTY from 8:30 PM until midnight with Day-Glo battery operated costumes, dancing to the music of the Amish Outlaws.

30] – Howard County Campaign the End the Israeli Occupation is hosting "Life in Occupied Palestine" by Anna Baltzer.  She is a Jewish American peace worker who spent eight months in Israel and the Occupied Territories documenting human rights abuses and supporting nonviolent direct action in the West Bank with the International Women's Peace Service. 36] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s death row, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  The next vigil is scheduled for Mon., Mar. 30.

37] – On Mon., Mar. 30 at 7 PM, Anne Wright, retired U.S. Army and retired State Department, will address “Gaza, Guantanamo, and My Journey” at George Mason Univ., Fairfax Campus, SUB II Ballroom [Student Union Bldg.], Fairfax. 38] – Baltimore United for Peace and Justice will meet at 7 PM on Mon., Mar. 30 at the AFSC, 4806 York Road. The BUPJ agenda will have a review of the anniversary commemoration of the Iraq War on March 19 and a strategy session for selling bus tickets to the April 4 march and rally in NYC.  As this meeting ends, the Pledge meeting will begin.

39] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM at the AFSC, 4806 York Road [three blocks north of Coldspring Lane].  The next meeting will be Mar. 30, and the agenda will include a report on oral arguments before D.C. 42] – Join The Backbone Campaign Creative Tactics Workshop for local organizers and community artists on Tues., Mar. 31 from 6-10 PM at United Workers office, 901 Hollins Street at Poppleton St.  The Backbone Campaign www.backbonecampaign.org provides creative tools to citizens and social movements.
