25] – Susan Barnett [reelandmealatnewdealcafe@gmail.com] on Mon., Feb. 16 at 6:30 PM wants you to know that Reel and Meal will show The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975. Arrive/Log on by 6:15 PM as the program starts promptly at 6:30 PM. If attending in person, please come to the New Deal Café at 113 Centerway (Roosevelt Center) in Greenbelt. Register at https://tinyurl.com/RnMFeb2026 This month’s film is sponsored by the Greenbelt Black History and Culture Committee.

The film is a 2011 collage of rare, long-lost footage covering the Black Power Movement and the social changes that took place in the ’60s and early ’70s. It’s more a time machine than a history film. Assembled from long-lost Swedish television footage, it splices together interviews and remarks made during one of the most turbulent and transformative periods in American life. The film captures rare, startlingly candid moments with figures who defined the Black Power Movement—Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), Angela Davis, Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, and others—speaking not for the record, but in the moment. Decades later, artists and activists shaped by that era, including Erykah Badu, Harry Belafonte, Talib Kweli, Melvin Van Peebles, and Sonia Sanchez, reflect on what it meant then—and why it still matters now. The documentary examines tensions between nonviolent civil rights activism and Black Power nationalism, opposition to the Vietnam War, the government’s covert COINTELPRO campaign, and the heroin epidemic that devastated Black communities. It also traces how the movement helped spark second-wave feminism, gay liberation, and broader struggles for justice.

You are encouraged to enjoy a plant-based meal during the film to participate in socially responsible, environmentally sustainable, and animal safe lifestyle choices. The Reel and Meal at the New Deal Café is a free monthly film series, started in September 2007. 26] – The Campaign for Peace, Disarmament & Common Security [joseph@cpdcs.ccsend.com] on Mon., Feb. 16 at 7 PM ET will host SOCIAL STRIKES: HOW CAN WE USE THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE TO END MAGA TYRANNY? Register at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_JoPktQCHSSqx5VMlUz7sUw#/registration

Donald Trump and his accomplices are conducting a creeping coup, which is seizing all the powers of the government and concentrating them in the personal will of the president. The consequence is armed attack abroad and armed assault against American cities. Popular opposition is growing and a powerful movement-based opposition is resisting. But what about a worst-case scenario where neither electoral nor non-electoral opposition forestalls a MAGA tyranny? Experience from Poland to the Philippines to South Korea to Puerto Rico has shown that "social strikes" -- including mass strikes, general strikes, and nonviolent popular uprisings -- can overcome tyrannical dictatorships. The Minnesota "Day of Peace and Freedom", has shown the power of a social strike right here in the US.  The speakers are Jeremy Brecher, historian, author and co-founder of the Labor Network for Sustainability; Colleen Rowley, former FBI whistleblower and Minneapolis resident, and Jackson Potter, vice-president of Chicago Teachers Union and leading figure in MaydayStrong. Simone Rothstein [simone.rothstein@jufj.org] is inviting you to join in on Mon., Feb. 16 from 7 to 8:15 PM for a Jews United for Justice Baltimore Action Team meeting on Zoom. Share important and exciting updates on the renters’ rights and immigrant justice campaigns. RSVP at https://jufj.org/event/bat-2-16-26/.

29] –The American Friends of Combatants for Peace [office@afcfp.org] on Tues., Feb. 17 at 1 PM ET are holding a webinar Education Interrupted — How Occupation Is Shutting Down Palestinian Schools. Across the West Bank, schools are operating only a few days a week due to occupation-related policies and withheld funds. Teachers go unpaid, routines collapse, and children are left without consistent access to education. This is not by accident, but by design.  Enjoy a timely conversation with Combatants for Peace, featuring Palestinian and Israeli activists and staff who are raising the alarm about a tactic of Israeli occupation: the systematic disruption of Palestinian education.  The speakers will share firsthand accounts from the ground, including personal stories from educators, parents, and activists living this reality. Together, they will help us understand how occupation is shaping the education crisis and how people in the U.S. and international community can take action in solidarity. RSVP at https://www.afcfp.org/past-events-data/education-interrupted-occupation-of-palestinian-schools

30] – The Union of Concerned Scientists [action@ucs.org] on Tues., Feb. 17 from 2 to 3 PM ET hope you will join in to fight back against federal deregulation. The Trump Administration is rolling back key environmental protections. Join the UCS Action Hour to learn how to defend science-based policies and protect our future. Practice tactics for resisting federal deregulation of public health and environmental safeguards through public participation! Several examples of regulatory fights past and present will be highlighted which will lead to a discussion of tactics for engaging in public comment periods and previewing the issues for 2026.  REGISTER at https://secure.ucs.org/a/2026-2-17-fight-against-deregulation?contactdata=oUD+ktumf4Hlly9XmPL0SMVR6Fc8HwVMGHUZxaV9TQwD5UPx4WzOllpZ3uB4bbuDVJtGOSU+xqn4FtmrdyQy5FWCwvNzJTVvBL5UpKXejCAjRppz7zoTeRl6z9LGGak3iXY3JhIOrXVfQ7oht2wHiR6JkVcAXV+sHEiJJLvnvi18bzioFEhRyEaGNvtE7hqpJxDinOQnX4rmUdSqKYw0j2sKx%2f5dP2Y8fTxaIao10agB1ihrSOub4Zb9F9EfCPTFzasPaAd+BZ5LrlcpS9SXIA%3d%3d&utm_campaign=email&utm_medium=email&utm_source=email&emci=d58f5ded-a906-f111-832e-000d3a18942f&emdi=3f2f5b5e-9507-f111-832e-0022482a9733&ceid=1507036

31] – Join the Baltimore Nonviolence Center on Tues., Feb. 17 from 4:30 to 5 PM ET at 33rd and N. Charles Sts. to challenge President Trump for a long list of illegal executive orders. And now he has invaded Venezuela. Without resistance Trump will undermine our flawed democracy.  Right now Trump wants fascism as the order of the day. Contact Max at Comcast dot net or 410-323-1607.

32] – Grassroots Action Team (via Common Cause) [causenet@commoncause.org] on Tues., Feb. 17 and Thurs., Feb. 19 at 6 PM ET wants you to join a weekly phone bank to key swing senators as Congress negotiates ICE and DHS’s demand for $10 billion.  Mobilize voters to take action against dangerous legislation in state houses and Congress. Focus on the most urgent campaigns that need help. Some of these campaigns may include stopping bills that will make it harder for millions of Americans—especially students, seniors, and veterans—to cast their ballots. Ensure voters across the country to call their elected representatives and make their voices heard. A full training will be provided at the start of each shift! The next phone bank will be on Tues., Feb. 24 at 6 PM ET.  This event will continue through Jan. 12, 2027.
