46] – Help provide Courtroom Support for an Immigrant Family on
Wed., July 23 at 9 AM in the Cummings Courthouse, 111 N. Calvert
St., Room 227C, Baltimore. Please
check the docket boards upon arrival as the room number may change without
prior notification. This family survived a violent robbery, and
they have been receiving violent threats (drive-by shooting) which they believe
are meant to scare them from testifying. The Ark & Dove Presbyterian Church
is providing them with support, and they have legal immigration status, but
they have concerns about potential ICE presence at the hearing. They’re asking
community members to show up and stand in quiet witness.
47] – The Maryland LCV Education Fund [edfundinfo@mdlcv.org] on Wed., July 23 at noon will hold a Conservation Conversation. It’s all about the Money, Money, Money: H.R. 1 and how it impacts Maryland. The discussion will center on the federal budget reconciliation act, or H.R.1, how it affects climate policy, clean energy, environmental justice, and how Maryland is responding to the legislation. 48] – Jewish Voice for Peace is doing a Power Half-Hour for Gaza: Channel grief & outrage into action to stop a genocide. A year into the genocide in Gaza, we are overwhelmed with sorrow and rage. There are no words to describe the devastating pain of the past year in which the Israeli military has killed over 58,000 Palestinians in Gaza, including more than 17,000 children. The International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court have both declared that Israel must stop the genocidal acts being committed on the Palestinian people. And the U.S. government is actively supporting the Israeli military as it wreaks devastation on the over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza. JVP continues to come together as a political community in its daily half-hour to take action. Join in and take collective action to demand an arms embargo to Israel, immediate end to the genocide, a lasting ceasefire and an end to Israeli siege, apartheid, occupation, and oppression of Palestinians and Lebanon. All are welcome. All are needed. Get involved at 3 PM ET on Wed., July 23, Thurs., July 24, Mon., July 28 & Tues., July 29. 49] – Food & Water Watch [act@fwwatch.org] on Wed., July 23 at 4 PM ET to join a canvass to get the RENEW Act passed. Meet in Paterson Park, 2601 E. Baltimore St., Baltimore. The RENEW Act could potentially raise billions of dollars for life-saving climate initiatives like getting air conditioning in all public schools, city flood protection programs, and climate shelters around the state’s beautiful coastlines. As people learn more about the RENEW Act, support for the bill grows. And so does the power we have to get the bill through Maryland’s legislature. The canvassing will continue on Sat., July 26 from noon to 2 PM, and on Wed., Aug. 6 from 4 to 6 PM.
Before starting you will be given a brief training on how to canvass, a.k.a. petition by knocking on doors. You will be paired up, and then you will take to the streets surrounding Patterson Park to tell neighbors what's going on and how they can help convince Senate President Bill Ferguson, the area’s state senator, to support the RENEW Act. 54] – On Wed., July 23 from 7 to 8:30 PM ET, Timmon Wallis will discuss his new book Nuclear Abolition: A Scenario. While Annie Jacobsen based her 2024 bestseller, Nuclear War: A Scenario on numerous interviews with generals, Pentagon war planners and other nuclear weapons experts, Wallis bases his scenario on interviews with peace activists and campaigners from across the country and Wallis bases his scenario on interviews with peace activists and campaigners from across the country and around the world. And while Jacobsen describes, second by second, how a single nuclear weapon could end up destroying civilization over a period of 72 minutes, Wallis lays out a pathway, already in progress, that could move the Doomsday Clock second by second further away from midnight, leading ultimately to the total elimination of nuclear weapons before it’s too late.
Wallis is Executive Director of NuclearBan.US, based in Northampton, MA. He was born in Cambridge, MA, and returned to his home state in 2017, after spending most of his life in the UK (plus several years in Belgium, Sri Lanka, South Sudan and a number of other countries). Wallis holds a PhD in Peace Studies and has been a nuclear disarmament activist for much of his life. His 2016 book, Disarming the Nuclear Argument, contributed to the negotiations for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, for which the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. Common Cause is watching our government rob us to make billionaires richer – instead of fighting for working people, while the people who are supposed to keep us safe are settling political scores, terrorizing our communities, and putting themselves first instead of us. Sen. Padilla (D-CA) will discuss where we, as people who care about democracy working for the people, go from here.
56 –The Progressive Democrats of America [info@pdamerica.org] on Wed., July 23 at 9 PM ET is having its Disabilities Issue Organizing Team discuss issues important to the community, and legislation and candidates for office who can help make the world a better place for anyone facing challenges. This month recognize the 35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (July 26th, to be specific). This landmark legislation has never fully addressed the needs of the disabled community, but was a huge leap in the right direction. 58] – Join a Historic One-Day Nurses Strike for Patient Safety at Saint Agnes on Thurs., July 24. JOIN THE PICKET LINE for a rally at 9 AM or anytime between 7 AM to 1 PM and/or 4 to 8 PM at Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital, 900 S. Caton Ave., Baltimore 21229. Registered nurses at Saint Agnes will be striking in response to concerns about dangerously low staff-to-patient ratios, nurse retention and turnover, and over-reliance on "floating nurses" who are often assigned to units where they may not have expertise. The nurses, who won the union at the hospital in 2023, have been in conversation with hospital leadership about the unsafe environments for patient care since January 2024 with no progress.
