ICE Detention. The COVID-19 virus has
posed a heightened threat to those in immigration custody. People held in U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities across the
country have faced deplorable living conditions that do not comply with Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, and a critical lack of access to
basic hygienic necessities throughout the pandemic. This conversation will be
moderated by Lee Gelernt, JD, MSc, a civil rights lawyer at the American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU), where he serves as deputy director of the Immigrants’
Rights Project and director of the Project’s Access to the Courts Program. He
is an adjunct professor at Columbia Law School.
The panelists are Nilson Barahona-Marriaga, a native Honduran who immigrated to the United States more than two decades ago.; Eunice Cho, JD, a senior staff attorney at the ACLU National Prison Project, where she focuses her work on challenging unconstitutional conditions in U.S. immigration detention facilities and the expansion of immigration detention; Josiah “Jody” Rich, MD, MPH, a professor of medicine and epidemiology at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and a practicing infectious disease and addiction specialist at The Miriam Hospital and the Rhode Island Department of Corrections; and Sophie Terp, MD, MPH, an associate professor of clinical emergency medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) and a clinical scholar at the USC Leonard D. Both the United States and Israel identify as democracies; however, each continues to practice the use of torture despite the fact that this tactic of punishment is decidedly anti-democratic. In order to whitewash their use of torture and to justify exceptions to the rule of law, they have consistently weaponized the democracy narrative as well as the false narrative that torture yields credible information. In spite of all this, we know that, as George Orwell wrote in his book 1984, “the object of torture is torture” -- the practice of torture has never been about extracting information, but rather about power, control, and the subduing of resistance.
To address and examine these issues in depth, a Guantanamo Bay torture survivor and a Palestinian survivor of Israeli torture will join the panel. Their voices will guide the conversation on the ways torture is inflicted in both the US and Israel, the narratives imposed on them throughout their torture and after, and what it will take to dismantle these apparatuses of torture. 24] – We Have a Do-or-Die, Time-Limited Chance to Defeat White Supremacy and Big Money. If you want equal protection so that every voter counts the same regardless of color, income, age, or neighborhood, now is the time to act. If you want freedom from the influence of big money, now is the time to act. In the next months, action by people like you can create a groundswell to pass three major bills (see details in box below). One of them (S. 1) would provide sweeping reforms to end special-interest corruption in our government. Congress must act early this summer or partisan redistricting – based on a flawed census – will have happened. The House of Representatives has the votes to pass these bills, and they can pass the Senate, too - but only if We the People let our senators know how we feel.
If these bills do not pass, action by some state legislatures will reduce the freedom to vote for targeted populations. Get Money Out – Maryland (GMOM) founded For the People – Maryland with 20 other groups to fight for these principles in the U.S. Congress. Therefore, the filibuster rule will need to change to allow these bills to pass with a simple majority.

They will mark the anniversary of Furman v. Georgia on Tuesday, June 29 at 9 PM ET, in a virtual panel discussion on “How We End the Death Penalty.” On June 29, 1972, the United States Supreme Court did abolish the death penalty in Furman v. Georgia when it found that existing death penalty schemes were arbitrary and inconsistent, violating the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. That ruling was overturned four years later, and the death penalty is currently imposed in 27 states. But capital punishment opponents continue their efforts to end the death penalty and our four panelists believe it is only a matter of time until we see the death penalty abolished in California and across the country.
