35] –On Wed., June 23 at 1 PM ET, join a stand against voter suppression, the filibuster, and political retrogression.  What is happening in state legislatures across the country in terms of passing voting restrictions is threatening our democracy. What extremists are doing in state legislatures is hurting us all. There has been a clarion call coming out of West Virginia, Kentucky and all across the nation. This democracy is not only worth fighting for it's also worth rising up to defend it.- RSVP at https://www.poorpeoplescampaign.org/manchin/?link_id=4&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-md-ppc-weekly-update-7&email_referrer=email_1206077&email_subject=md-ppc-weekly-update.  Note that there is a bus leaving from Baltimore and many cities on the East Coast.

Poor and low wealth people of all races must stand up. This fight is not just about race. Suppressing the vote hurts Black, white, brown, Indigenous, Asian, disabled, young, poor and low wealth people. Voter suppression allows people to get elected who block living wages, health care, immigrant and LGBTQIA rights. Suppressing the vote is constitutionally inconsistent, morally indefensible, politically unacceptable, and economically insane.

This is fight is far from over and this is why we’re asking you to join the West Virginia and Kentucky Poor People’s Campaigns in Washington, DC for a Moral March on Manchin and McConnell. West Virginians and Kentuckians have issued the call, and will be joined by other states, representing people of all colors, creeds, religions, and backgrounds for a March on Manchin and McConnell to demonstrate our power to stop voter suppression and the filibuster, and continue to demand the protection and expansion of voting rights, the raising of wages to at least $15/hour, the extension of unemployment benefits, the expansion of health care, indigenous rights, and infrastructure development that lifts from the bottom.

36] – Dewayne Johnson, ACLU People Power [info@peoplepower.org] wants you to know No Dignity without ID: Join us for a virtual convening on transgender rights on Wed., June 23 at 2 PM ET. Trans and non-binary people belong, and need IDs that accurately reflect who we are so we can travel, apply for jobs, and enter public establishments without risk of harassment or harm.  The ACLU launched the They the People campaign in early 2021 to urge the Biden administration to give Trans and non-binary people access to accurate IDs issued by federal agencies.  Discuss transgender rights and the importance of accurate IDs. RSVP at https://aclu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYvcu2upjMrHtLoDWDrxgxcuba7WdP446kj?source=ppem_98744.

37] – Jim Zogby [mailto:jzogby@aaiusa.org] on Wed., June 23 at 2 PM ET wants you to join him for Coffee and a Column.  He will discuss Netanyahu's legacy after 15 years as prime minister. 38] – The For the People Act is the most expansive democracy reform legislation we have seen since the Voting Rights Act. This bill will protect voting rights, eliminate dark money in our elections, restore transparency and accountability in our government, and curb partisan and racial gerrymandering once and for all. It is crucial that we all know what it is and how to advocate for its passage! Join a friendbank and be with friends, families, and networks to join in this important work to ensure we pass the For the People Act! It will happen on Wed., June 23 at 4:30 PM ET.  Sign up at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZErcuytrjgqH9WTpQElA-NOkv1eodv2O7uX.

39] – The Statewide Justice Task Force of Progressive Maryland is making calls to support community oversight in policing! Join the next Virtual Phonebank on Wed., June 23 from 5:30 to 7 PM. Make calls to folks in Southern Maryland, talking with them about the importance of community oversight in policing, and asking them to hold their legislators accountable. Start with a brief training on the script, and then start dialing. RSVP at https://secure.everyaction.com/JaKZU0so702p0Hm2eP77Vw2?emci=94912d22-83d3-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&emdi=6a45ceb3-8dd3-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&ceid=136680.

40] – Alicia McBride, FCNL [aliciamcbride@fcnl.org] is asking you to join in for “Talking through Political Disagreement: Is It Even Worth It?” Karen Tibbals and Val Liveoak will showcase new skills for communicating across political divides. 41] – On Wed., June 23 at 7 PM, there is a Virtual Workshop hosted by three Maryland Poor Peoples Campaign faith leaders on the often quoted scripture: Matt 26 where Jesus says that you will always have the Poor. Hear several readings of this story together and deepen an understanding of its meaning and the distorted moral narrative that has continued to place the blame for poverty on the poor rather than on the structures that are producing and perpetuating poverty. - RSVP https://actionnetwork.org/events/learning-together-workshop-you-will-always-have-the-poor?source=direct_link&&link_id=5&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&email_referrer=email_1206077&email_subject=md-ppc-weekly-update.  Email western@mdpoorpeoplescampaign.org.

42] –  Molly Amster, Jews United for Justice [info@jufj.org] wants you to join a Baltimore Action Team meeting on Wed., June 23 from 7 to  8 PM ET.  Join JUFJers from across Baltimore to discuss the ongoing issue campaign work. Share updates for all the local campaigns, and brainstorm on how to move the work forward. Everyone is welcome, whether you are a regular attendee or new to the work! You will receive call-in instructions via email after you RSVP at https://jufj.org/event/bat-june-23/?emci=edde018d-c3c7-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&emdi=38435c72-3bc9-eb11-a7ad-501ac57b8fa7&ceid=3403859.

43] –   Preparations for Nuclear War with China over Taiwan – Then and Now will happen on Wed., June 23 from 7 to 8:30 PM EDT.  Daniel Ellsberg has done it again! 50 years after his courageous whistleblowing release of the Pentagon’s secret Vietnam War history, The Pentagon Papers, he has again shaken the nation and the world with a new revelation. It has critically important implications for the new Cold War confrontation with China and the debate over the possibility over Congress or the Biden Administration adopting a No First Use nuclear policy.  For more than 60 years the government has kept secret its 1958 willingness to completely sacrifice Taiwan in order to save it. During that Taiwan crisis, the Eisenhower administration prepared and threatened to attack China with nuclear weapons. Ellsberg’s revelation demonstrates that Eisenhower and Dulles were willing to accept a retaliatory Soviet nuclear attack on Taiwan following U.S. nuclear bombing of China. As the U.S. and China ratchet up tensions over Taiwan, Ellsberg asserts that the Pentagon must again be debating the possibility of sacrificing Taiwan and its people to save them. 44] – Beyond the Bomb [Rachel@beyondthebomb.org] wants you to join in on Wed., June 23 at 8 PM ET for a webinar on the intersections of Black history and Local Peace Activism! Celebrate Juneteenth by uplifting the Black historians of the Bomb Squad and asking them to share their knowledge of local activism and Black history with all!  Welcome Brittanie Van Zant, a student of African American studies and history at Chicago State University, and Matthew McKenzie, a student of Prelaw, history and Africana Studies at Niagara University, to teach about the unique and crucial roles activists from their areas played in the peace movement. RSVP at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ExywaqF-TRKWNGMaxK_KCg?link_id=0&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-juneteenth-is-saturday-keep-learning-all-month-2&email_referrer=email_1213879___subject_1603037&email_subject=tomorrow-juneteenth-was-saturday-keep-learning-all-month.

45] – End the Travel Ban to North Korea will be discussed on Wed., June 23 from 8 to 9 PM EDT.  Since 2017, US citizens have been restricted from traveling to North Korea. The ban prevents Korean Americans from visiting their family members in North Korea, hinders humanitarian organizations from delivering critical assistance, and obstructs US citizens from engaging in people-to-people exchanges and peace-building efforts. This is yet another tragic cost of the unresolved 70-year-old Korean War. Participate in an online discussion about the harms caused by the US travel ban on North Korea and how you can support the campaign to lift the ban to allow people to travel freely. Register at https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_YmrWBPOCRYmO9IYFebfyfg.

46] – Andi Petrovic [apetrovic@citizen.org] is asking you to protest at the EUROPEAN UNION DELEGATION HQ, 2175 K ST. NW, WDC on Thurs., June 24 at 10 AM ET in WDC.  Rethink Trade wants the EU to stop being Big Pharma’s puppet. The European Union, pushed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, is still blocking a plan to suspend drug companies’ intellectual property rights to rapidly scale up vaccine supplies and save lives.

While COVID-19 vaccination rates soar in the US and Europe, only 0.3% of people in low-income countries have had their first shot. Communities across the Global South are facing terrifying new waves of preventable death and sickness with virtually no protection or treatment. Hear from Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Ro Khanna (D-Cal.), union and civil society leaders, and activists, and call on the EU to end its dangerous opposition to a waiver of IP barriers at the WTO so more vaccines and treatments can be made worldwide. RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/european-union-quit-being-pharmas-puppet-support-the-covid-waiver-save-lives?link_id=3&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-thursday-webinar-wrep-schakowsky-doctors-without-borders-and-more-3&email_referrer=email_1212647___subject_1601801&email_subject=coming-up-protest-this-thurs-in-dc-eu-stop-being-pharmas-puppet.
